Around the Big East 18/19

I really hope our coaching positions don't become a revolving door every few years which unfortunately seems to be the trend with the huge football schools poaching. There's just no way any Big East school can compete with them in terms of facilities, money, etc. It's important that we keep some of the good coaches for 10+ yrs so they become big names if they aren't already like Wright. I remember in the Big East 30 for 30 they said a big part of what made the conference so successful were the amazing coaches and their personalities. Having top notch coaches and keeping them long term is very important IMO. I always get nervous about the future of the conference as big football schools raise the bar beyond our reach in most cases for the best coaches. Only 2 legitimate critiques of the Big East now are 1) poor tourney performance and 2) lack of coaching stability/constant poaching.
Are you going to do this every time a Big East coach is mentioned as a potential candidate for a big time job? Obviously you're a big fan, but if people here didn't know you we'd assume you were trolling.

The ACC had a coach poached this year, the American had a coach poached this year. The Big Ten just had one of their biggest coaches poached by the NBA. It happens to literally every conference and will continue happening.

The Big East, meanwhile... has kept everyone or upgraded.

I can't even imagine what some on here would be like if Nova didn't suddenly become a blue blood overnight. If the Big East didn't have MSG locked up long term. If we weren't consistently getting half our conference into the Dance. Have to learn to be grateful for what you have when things could be so much worse. Really, we're in a great position.
There are different levels of poaching even within a conference. For example when Tom Crean left Marquette he left for Indiana, that is a legit top 10 job in America. When Buzz Williams left Marquette he left for Virginia Tech. That is not even a top 10 ACC job...LOL Don't just look at the conference. That's not fair. Rutgers is a B10 job, it is nowhere near the level of a Michigan, Indiana, Mich St etc. In fact there are numerous mid major conference jobs better than a Rutgers or other bottom feeding major conference jobs. If this was still the old Big East with Cuse and Louisville and UCONN and Pitt etc neither Crean nor Buzz would leave for a Virginia Tech.

And when Buzz left for Virginia Tech, that was a head scratcher because on the level Marquette is a better basketball job than Va Tech most will acknowledge, he specifically said the uncertainty of not having a football affiliation was the biggest reason why he left.

During the six seasons of the "New Big East", we have lost two coaches to big time programs (Mack to Louisville) and (Holtmann to Ohio State). Wright, Cooley, McDermott and Willard have been here all six years and Wojo I believe came year 2. Georgetown, St. John's and DePaul had to replace there coaches. That is not exactly a lot of turnover in today's game. Wright and McDermott seem like lifers and Ewing isn't leaving Georgetown to go to a Power 5 school. I would be very surprised if Anderson or Leitao at there age are going anywhere either. The other five could very well be poached if they win. I would hope this happens slowly and if we only lose another two coaches over the next six years that would be great.

As for tournament success that is a little more of a concern to me. in addition to Villanova, it would be nice to see more teams advancing to the second weekend. This was a particularly bad season. Hopefully that improves and we are part of that resurgence.
I agree that teams outside of Nova (and Xavier with their Elite 8 run in 2017) haven't been good in March, and this was definitely a rough year in particular. However, Nova winning 2X proves that teams in the Big East can win it all. Most casual fans just remember who wins the championship, and the Big East gets far more credit for that than if a few teams advance to the second weekend each year. Who were the Elite 8 teams 4 or 5 years ago? Even most of us die hard fans don't remember. However, if I mention UNC then everyone knows that they won it all a few years ago.

If Nova hadn't won, we'd be hearing all about how Big East teams can't win a title. I certainly think going forward other teams need to step up, but Nova has elevated themselves more during these past 5 years than any team in the nation. If I were given the option of redoing these past 5/6 Tournaments (not counting St. John's), there's no way I'd sign up for that. Only 2 conferences have won a Title during the past 5 years and the Big East being one of them is not something I'd trade for more balance (more F4/E8/S16). Again, it'd be awesome to have both, but the ACC is the only league to achieve that recently.

Regarding the rest of my post, I just think it's silly to freak out every time a Big East coach is one of a dozen mentioned by some random article. It's such a weak inferiority complex and if anything speaks to the success so many coaches in our league have had. I agree with you that our turnover has been fine over the past few years. We don't have SEC money and never will, but we don't need that to be successful.

Buzz is the only head scratcher, and that happened after the first year of the new Big East (our worst year, aside from arguably this past season). He was obsessed with numbers and convinced himself that Big East teams couldn't be successful in the new league, which he was wrong about. Fact is he just left a job in the super successful ACC for a mid tier (if even that?) SEC job. VT is now in shambles and probably will be rebuilding for some time.

In short: Buzz is an extreme outlier, and further he's one from before the new league really got started. Coaches at the BE's biggest schools like Wright (and hopefully soon Ewing) easily offset his departure.

Texas A&M is a better job than Virginia Tech with a ton of money and great facilities. Billy Kennedy 3 years ago won an SEC title and a year ago went to sweet 16 .
And they fired that guy.

And BE coaches aren't getting offered elite high major jobs, when they do they leave. That simple. That is not evidence they are trying to stay home more than they simply aren't good enough to be in the running for those jobs. UCLA went thru 7 guys not one was a BE coach, is that because they didnt think Cooley or Jordan wouldn't say yes? No because they had no interest in offering.

The fact that Cooley is at his dream job and yet is interviewing for Michigan should tell you something.

Such as? You already named Buzz. Who else? Louisville and Michigan are elite. The NBA is elite.

Schools that have not been poached: Seton Hall, Providence, Villanova, Georgetown, St. John's, DePaul, Creighton
Schools that have been poached: Marquette (VT), Butler (NBA/Ohio St), Xavier (Louisville)

Am I missing something here? Or do you not consider Louisville, Ohio St and (potentially) Michigan elite?

? Nobody obviously, I was simply listing out the entire conference. Meanwhile, Wright, McDermott, Cooley and WiIllard could have easily left for many jobs the past few years, including elite ones.

That said, it looks like Cooley to Michigan may happen, but Michigan is a top 10 job. I stand by my post that aside from VT in year 1, all the coaches have been taken by elite (top 10-15) schools/NBA.

One Twitter rumor saying Cooley to Michigan for $6 million annually, which would make him the 4th highest paid coach.

If Cooley does go to Michigan, it'd be great if PC hires Pitino. Cooley is a good coach no doubt, but he hasn't had any Tournament success. Pitino would make for a really interesting story line. The question of course is whether PC would offer.

If Cooley leaves, would PC reach out to DeMeo?...which obviously would be great for him.
Maybe PC might aim ‘higher’.
But Steve would be an interesting ‘reach’.
Dunno.

St Johns might be the only school where
the assistant coach got poached for an NBA head coach gig, Dunlap... Seeing the salary Michigan is offering, it is hard for the BE to compete. Nevertheless, when a BE coach has been poached his replacement has been good,

Hope he stays with PC, but I think Cooley would do well at Michigan.

The Providence board already speculating about his replacement. Here is a tiered list they are currently bantering about. I believe they are referring to Richard and not Rick Pitino.

Tier 1
Pitino
Donovan

Tier 2
Skerry
Coen
Becker
Battle
Odom
Schmidt

The BOT ‘released’ that or ‘buzz’?!?
Wow, surprised the BOT would consider Pitino.
Maybe the AD is pushing him, and Donovan??
Wow.

Just fan speculation. Most of them don't think Donovan would take the job.

Our Board didn’t have a list like that?!?
Is there something “seriously, seriously wrong with us?!?”.
Lol.
Joking...from one of my favorite movies...

Dunno.
No

I heard from a pretty good source if Easy Ed is offered the job at Michigan he will take it.

Big loss if it happens for PC. But I actually think he would do great there. Beilein has put together a tremendous culture at Michigan and Cooley is the type of person that can run with it.

Ed Cooley has agreed to a multi-year extension with Providence & has withdrawn from Michigan’s coaching search, per a release.
