Around the Big East 18/19

Creighton kept their season going tonight, as they defeated Memphis in the second round of the NIT. One more win, and they go back to MSG.

I am telling ya......it sure seems like other teams do a better job of keeping their kids realistic about NBA prospects. Perhaps it's not as bad as it seems, but it feels like every SJU player that averages more than 15 points a game is "going pro".

Meanwhile, Myles Powell rumored to be staying in school

Strange year for Villanova they had bookend blowout losses to Big Ten teams by 27 to Michigan on November 14th and a 26 point waxing by Purdue tonight to end their season. In between they had two puzzling out of conference losses to non-power conference teams Furman and Pennsylvania and a two week stretch in February where they lost 4 out of 5 conference games. However they also won both the Big East Conference regular season and tournament titles and were the only Big East team to win an NCAA tournament game.

In a down year for them and a very down year for the league they still came out on top. They were the proverbial big fish in the small pond and Jay Wright knows how to do more with less than any other coach in the league.

In contrast with supposedly more talent than we had during the Mullin era we achieved less than was either hoped for or expected this season. Hopefully going forward we will be able to do more with less, because based on current future projections the production level arrow is pointing down not up.

Change title of thread to Around the Big Least as our regular season and conference tourney champ goes down by 26 to a 3 seed in the round of 32 and other 3 reps were ousted in first game. At least next season is looking up for about 9 of our teams.

That’s what Pond should do. Just mo but think Myles would be recruited ahead
Another yr would really make a diff to Ponds

Next yr we will have a center,a power forward/center in Steele Very good pt guard in Cam Ljubljana back think we will be better and who knows we pick up someone else, not getting down for next yr. we could also have a change in staff who knows

Going by right now things not looking too good but who knows what will happen by start of next season. As of now guys we are bringing in are pretty inexperienced and haven't played together so will be tough to do much damage in an improved BE. Let's hope for some positive developments in the not to distant future.

Is a mediocre Big East better for our recruiting or worse?

Worse. Iron sharpens iron.

Despite the NCAA Tournament flop by this conference, there are 3 Big East teams that are still playing games, and one of them is in action on Sunday (Guys, I've been doing this all year, and intend to see this through to the end):

NIT Second Round:

4:00 PM - Xavier at Texas - ESPN

The Big East succumbed in the first weekend of the NCAA's like I predicted. I just thought the conference was mediocre (not competitive as some thought), and figured the conference would lie down like a cheap hooker in the NCAA's. Too bad for our conference, it came to fruition.

The conference was competitive because all of the teams were mediocre.

I wonder how much stronger our conference will be next season. Villanova has a loaded class and if Wright can put it together they should be a stronger teamand certainly have the highest ceiling. Seton Hall and Marquette could be better but hard to tell how much. After that there are a number of teams that could improve but enough to win more then one NCAA game seems unlikely. We could get more then four NCAA teams in the tournament but more then ever the conference will need to prove it in the non conference season.

Donny Marshall said it correctly during our first meeting with Nova...talent wise they were about 3rd or 4th best in the league...

What allowed them to succeed was knowing how to win games (a credit to the culture built by the coaching staff and the player commitment to team play) . Unfortunately, for them, they suffered from same malady as SJ...no inside presence and hence hammered by talented bigs like those on Michigan and Purdue. We were, at least quick, unlike Nova. Didn’t help us in end as we didn’t leverage it effectively and also depth and size were too much to overcome.

Like I said a few years ago, much to Dinkins’ chagrin, Willard was building a program; close to being built. Good staff, player leadership continuity with first Rodriguez and Carrington, now Nzei, no secret that it looks like Powell stays, so that baton should pass to him. Talent, of course, matters big time but so does locker room leadership and team chemistry. The lack of both dwarfed the size issue, which is convenient but overblown IMO.

Nah, not to my chagrin. LOL I just view Seton Hall as mediocre. Do I think Willard is decent coach? He got more of my respect this season than he did in the past few seasons. But all I see is mediocrity until proven otherwise.

We do agree about our "size issue" being overblown. A convenient excuse. Although, we did lack size, but our staff never implemented a plan to camouflage our size or lack of.
