Around the Big East 18/19

Still bewildered how Marquette loser of their last 5 of 6 and BET Semi Final Loser gets a higher seed than the regular Season and Tournament Champion , Villanova . Marquette is a 5 and Nova a 6 . I know the Selection Chairman , Bernard Muir , said 10 Quad 1 wins vs 5 for Nova . Which essentially negates Winning the BE Championship and regular season . I thought it was a BS Answer . If that’s the Case , why do any of the Smaller Conferences get their Non Tournament Second placers in vs higher ranked Teams in larger Conferences . So , the NCAA just makes up their seedings however they wish . Nova is clearly a better team than Marquette . No question .

This is what made me think SJU wasn't getting in when they got to the last Regional. I actually still think Marquette top to bottom is the best BE team, but I thought with the way they finished and with Nova winning regular season and Tourney ultimately Nova would get the best seed. So when they were a 6 I figured Marquette would be no better than a 6 and therefore no way SJU would be able to get an 11 with Marquette as a 6.

I think Marquette was moved to the five because the committee had decided to put us into that 11 matchup. The difference between five and six is insignificant enough that they didn't worry about it at all. I don't think there was any analysis done of the relative merits of Marquette and Villanova.

Could be although the Chair last night was asked about Marquette and Villanova and they argued that Marquette had the stronger resume and that is why they got a 5 and Nova got a 6 (Better non-conference wins and better road record). In other words they did not make the case that they were essentially equal but to uphold integrity of the bracket and avoid a potential BE first round matchup they had to move Marquette to a 5. And that is something they in year's past were not afraid to admit.

Thanks, I didn't see that. The difference is most likely how I view things from a conference POV and they just don't care about conference play anymore.

Marquette was the better team all year and suddenly because nova beat X and Seton Hall by a combined 6 points they deserve a better seed.

Marquette’s resume is flat out better. They stumbled to end the year, but nova lost 4 out of 5 in February. Just because their skid happened a few weeks earlier doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt their seed line.

A lot of recency bias going on with nova. They were average all season especially by their standards, and a 6 seed was solid and deserved for them.

Also, split hairs about the seeding but Villanova got the better path to a sweet 16 imo. Marquette might get booted immediately going up against Ja Morant. While I think st Mary’s beating Gonzaga was their super bowl and emotionally might have a let down against VU

How can they even begin to justify Marquette over Villanova ? It just doesn’t compute . Nova won the BE Regular Season title AND the BE Tournament . The Quad 1 wins stat is silly . What this guy is saying to the BE is , your regular Season Schedule AND your BE Tournament don’t count as much as a Quad 1 win , which is a very faulty reasoning . I’m surprised none of the talking heads on any of the Networks questioned Marquette’s seed ovrt Nova . To me , winning the regular Season BE and post season Tournament says to me , your team is a top 15 team and possibly Top 10. Making Nova a 6 seed says they are 24 th rated team , which is BS . Nova would wipe the floor with Houston , Nevada , Maryland , Florida State. , Iowa, Auburn, Purdue,. Etc. I also think Nova would give any of the 1 and 2 seeds trouble , and could in fact beat them . This year , BE Teams best the stuffing out of each other . Showing how tough the league was and how close the teams were in competing . Even Nova and Marquette weren’t head and shoulders above the rest of the league , even though they had the only winning records . Marquette limped to the finish line , losing 5 of 6 . At year end , Seton Hall, Xavier we’re playing better . Even Creighton and G town . And , while it’s true we lost 5 of 6 including the tourney , so did the Milwaukee ‘s finest .

Two Big East teams play their First Round games in the NIT tonight:

9:00 PM - Loyola Chicago at Creighton - ESPNU
9:00 PM - Arkansas at Providence - ESPN2

When most people look at conferences , they only look at the top. But, the bottom of the BE is tough, as evidenced by the last place team making the NIT.

DePaul made the CBI.

The Big East May have been ‘down’ versus last year in terms of dominant teams at the top versus last year, but it must’ve been one of the more balanced and competitive major conferences in the country this season, top to bottom.
Here’s hoping ‘that’ helps us tomorrow.
