Around the Big East 18/19

What an absolute s***show from the refs in this Marquette-SHU game. There has to be some sort of punishment for these refs, especially because it always seems to be the same couple guys.

I’ve never seen a game called worse start to finish. 80 FTs?

The ego on the ref that called a tech in McKnight for taking a few crow hops while getting back on d after being whistled for a Ricky-tack foul is just unreal. There is no room for egos from adult officials in a college game. Holy crap. And how was Powell not ejected?!

OK, a few things:

Anim and Powell got a double T for taunting. Anim was tossed because it was his 2nd T (he had gotten one earlier).

Powell stayed, because the call on him in the first half, was a flagrant 1, not a T. You can get one of each, and still stay in the game (that actually happened to Ponds in the VCU game, that's how I knew that).

The Theo John ejection was total BS, IMO. Powell started pointing at him, saying John threw him while he was airborne. I don't know if Powell actually thought that, or if he was doing a dirty trick that the refs bought, because I did not see John do anything.

Here's another issue I have, and this is something I've hated for a long time: How come, no one in MSG, could be shown any replays of the incident on the jumbotron? Fans payed big money to get into this game, and they had no idea what was going on throughout all of those 9 minutes. Meanwhile, the guy sitting at home on his couch, not having spent a dollar, is totally kept in the loop about what's going on. I don't mind that second part, but the ticket buying public should have been able to see the replays.

Pool reporter Mike Fitzpatrick of the Associated Press conducted this postgame interview with crew chief James Breeding:

Q. About the conference that led to multiple ejections.

A. "So the initial play when 13 white Powell for Seton Hall drives, he is fouled, common foul by 2 for Marquette. After that foul, the ball's now dead, Theo John contacts him in a vulnerable position, we deemed the contact severe and ejected him for a flagrant technical foul. That's kind of sequence one. After that happened, we then had 13 for Seton Hall get up and get into a verbal altercation with 2 for Marquette. They were assessed a double technical foul.

That was the second technical foul on 2 for Marquette. By rule, he's ejected for two unsporting technical fouls. It was the only the first technical foul on 13 for Seton Hall. His play in the first half where he received a flagrant personal foul is not a technical foul. So by rule, he can play with one flagrant personal foul and one technical foul. You have to have two technicals to be ejected. The last part of that sequence is, 23 white for Seton Hall comes in and makes unsporting contact that we deemed severe in nature, and he was ejected for a flagrant technical foul."

Q. Was there some misunderstanding or miscommunication about whether or not (Powell) had been ejected?

A. "Yeah. Because he had had a flagrant personal foul in the first half, the Seton Hall bench thought that he was ejected for a second foul, not understanding that _ I won't say they didn't understand, but it probably wasn't communicated clearly to them that his personal foul in the first half is a live ball flagrant personal foul which carries a different penalty than the technical foul, and those two together don't result in ejection. Only two technical fouls, unsporting technical fouls, result in ejection."

"The Seton Hall bench thought that he had been ejected. When I saw that he went to the locker room, I went to them and said, `He has one technical foul, one live ball flagrant personal foul, that does not result in ejection. They went and got him back."

"I think it was announced incorrectly over the PA."

Q. So you communicated to the bench, basically, he can still play.

A. "Yes, and then we communicated that to Marquette as well."

Q. Do any of those penalties have a carry-over effect to the next game?

A. "They do not. From what we ruled on the floor, they do not. Those were not deemed fighting acts. Ejections do not carry over unless the conference office reviews the play and decides to take further action on its own."

Q. Was any of that established by you guys looking at the replay monitor?

A. "No. Some of that we knew and talked about before we got to the monitor, and then at the monitor we confirmed our rulings."

"We knew and talked about what we had on all of those players mentioned before we got to the monitor, and then confirmed those rulings."

Q. A lot of whistles late. Did you feel like the game was getting out of hand a little bit?

A. "I would just say that the fouls that were called are fouls we've called all year throughout the season."

Q. The late technical on McKnight:

A. "The foul was called and he reacted in an unsporting manner."

Seton Hall now in the finals against a beatable Nova team. They really finished the season strong.

Having watched the majority of Big East games this season, I can say that the officiating this year has been an embarrassment like I've never seen before. Not only that, but refs have 100% dictated the outcome of games a across the conference. It's a travesty that makes me not want to follow college ball anymore.

I’m shocked at how shocked people are at a BE game being poorly officiated.

It appeared that Anam initially gave a little shove to Powell as he fouled him . John compounded it by definitely giving Powell a further shove as he was about to go out of bounds . It was pretty clear that’s what happened since TV repeated it several times . College BB officiating has gone to new depths . Ticky tack , no harm fouls are called and often the rough play under the hoop are ignored . And , the number of Blocking and Charging calls are out of hand . Plus are mostly wrong . The Hauser Bros play tough , physical bordering on fouls all the time . They got away with a lot of pushing and shoving all night underneath . Joey did foul out but, Sam got away with a lot . They are great Shooters though . I thought it was asking a lot for Howard to bring the ball upcourt and attempt the shot on the last play . He was harassed the entire way and had to rush the shot . Despite him being BE player of the year, a better shot might have been Sam Hauser at the top of the key., after Howard got the ball upcourt . But, that’s a hindsight call . Powell goes hard to the basket on every drive , something that Ponds use to do but, not so much in the 2 Nd half of the season . Injury ? And , I haven’t looked but, Shamorie took far fewer outside shots this season too . Sure , he had a better supporting cast but , he still was the Man . Don’t know for sure but , he just didn’t seem 100 percent the later part of the season .

Powell has a definite 'tude, which is what makes him the warrior he is.
Ponds has not been the same player the last half of the BE Season.
Injuries, stress/pressure, changing defenses, poor adjustment by both Shamorie and Staff.
Dunno, but our season sure the heck crashed into the shoals, losing 4 of our last 6 games.
And our team doesn't seem to play well together; very flat and static offensive schemes.
Been a disappointing season for a bucket of reasons.
Here's hoping we squeak into the Dance and 'surprise'.

They botched that whole scuffle sequence. At most, should have been a double tech on John’s and Manu - and that might be a stretch. Could just as easily have warned both teams and let it go.

I hate SH and wanted them to lose badly, but that tech on McKnight was one of the most awful calls I’ve ever seen. 4-pt game very late...the kid does 2-3 crow hops after a should-be no-call while getting back on defense and the gown adult ref’s ego couldn’t take that? He wasn’t even facing the ref. It didn’t affect the game at all.

There is no room for egos from grown men officials in a college game. They dictated the pace of the game. They dictated who could play. They dictated the outcome. And somehow the villain of the game, Powell, was allowed to finish. He could have been t’d up 15x.

Can't wait until Val and Stu finish writing the league's statement on last night's officiating. They're cowardice is always good for a laugh.

Perhaps they will recklessly perpetuate an obvious lie like they did after our game with SHU.

Watching guys like Zach Hankins and Romaro Gill produce in the BET, I can’t help but think Yankuba Sima being that player for us. Would have been a senior this year.

In a "down" year, Nova will finish first in the regular season and win the BET. Blue blood. They are going to be absolutely loaded next year.

Anyone else sick of seeing former Big East teams shown coming back to live coverage? They left the Big East F them!
