Syracuse is yet another case of a program floundering after hiring the coaching legends' hand-picked successor withouth doing a full-on search.

Duke is kind of the exception that proves the rule on that, at least in the modern era, and Coach K announced his retirement a year out. Schyer basically had a year of not completly on-the-job training.

Jamie Dixon at Pitt, Mark Few at Gonzaga, Greg Gard at Wisconsin are other examples…

Mark Few didn't replace a legend. Monson took them on one NCAA run to the Elite Eight, then bolted. That's worked at other places. Few is the legend there, IMO.

That’s fair. But the point is that it doesn’t always work out terribly to hire the top assistant vs open up a national search.

I am killing time watching Drexel vs Monmouth on FSNY wanting to see what the hype was about concerning Abdi Bashir Jr. was about. I see why his coach, King Rice was quoted in the papers for all other schools to “leave him alone” during the season and not to tamper with him.

He is 6’7” plays the 2 and his range seems to be limited to as soon as he steps in the gym, with what appears to be quick hands and a crossover dribble(of course as I type this he turns the ball over and on the next possession has his shot blocked).shooting 40% from the field (same as from 3) and 91% on free throws averaging 21 ppg after averaging 6 in half the time last year. He has 20 points in the first half.

From Omaha.

Saw him against Seton Hall. Easily best player on the court. Dropped 28 on them in a win. I didn't see the other, but he had 38 against Rutgers as well.

Struggled against Mich St, Temple and Auburn. But he can absolutely play at this level...

Were those guys hand picked by the previous coach though? Seems like those are examples of where the previous coach took a better opportunity, and the school decided on their own to hire one of the assistants already there.

Funny thing, the other guard, Madison Durr went off in the second half going 10 for 11 from the field and 19 for 19 at the foul line to score 40 points as Monmouth won in double overtime.

The FSNY coverage was bad like going to commercial with 7 seconds left in regulation during a substitution with Monmouth up by two and when they came back, the game was tied and Monmouth attempting a heave at the buzzer from near their own basket. It happened a couple of times, commercials right in the middle of play.
