Around College Basketball

To be clear, I don't have inside info on anything but I enjoy connecting dots. Its very rare to stay at a school all five years, he plays CRP's style, and has a very very clear connection with our staff. He'd also be able to stay close to NJ, where he moved at 14. It just makes a ton of sense on paper.

CJ Wilcher is a guy Matt A recruited to Nebraska. He'd be another fifth year guy. He would fit the profile of a guy with size and three point shooting. He may also be seen as a bonus to his brother, Simeon, who we should prioritize retaining & developing.

Scored 11 off the bench two games ago but his time on the court has dwindled this year with Ohio Stat going with to taller players at the two power positions with one being a true rim protector.
I just don’t get the love affair with Zed key. He’s not that mobile and not that aggressive on the boards, to me, at best, he’s a lesser version of Zuby Ejifor.

From the OSU site:
  • Was playing like one of the top centers in the Big Ten prior to his injury as he was averaging 13.4 points and 8.4 rebounds while shooting 63.5 percent from the floor before Jan. 5
I think he can give us close to that if he's healthy. But I can certainly see the concern if we brought him in as a starter after seeing what's going on with him this season.
Why take a risk when there will probably be better options.

If you want to have the urge to open the 200th thread about players from last year, watch Purdue/Wisconsin & see AJ Storr lead the #6 team in scoring & look like a bonafide stud.
Don't think his coach is that high on him. With a little over 2 minutes left in a close game he took him out, never to return in a close game. He shot 4for 15 and only had 2 fouls. In crunch time his coach took him out.

I think your dot connecting is exceptional in this post.

One of the reasons I think we are bringing in three bigs, not two.

Plus we are still St. John's. Better options might not come here if there isn't a local connection.
Cliff would be a major coup if we can pull it off, but wouldn't Cliff + a potential Zed key + Zuby (if he stays, though no reason to think he won't at this point) + Maker scare any other bigs away? Not much playing time to be had with if that group is already in tow.

Probably will see growing influence of some NIL groups in challenging program leadership. Boosters, especially in football, had sway for years, but process is more formalized now. Pendulum has to be adjusted re NIL in addition to “no sitting out” transfer process.

You could probably take the “probably“ out😂

College hoops pendulum imo has swung to an extreme. Kids deserve compensation, but free agency and NIL has made the playing field mega difficult for lower level programs and overall continuity.

The Dance is my favorite sports event and one element of that is seeing teams like Fairleigh Dickinson, FAU, St Peter’s, etc knock off highly favored power teams giving schools a boost and players memories they will cherish forever. Many lower level HCs are also keen talent evaluators seeing potential in kids, but no way they can retain any who have solid years.

Monetary resources and “bags” always ruled back to Sam Gilbert days at UCLA, but this NIL/Free Agency tsunami feels well beyond that. Rubber hits the road for me with less interest in the game, obviously not there yet, but getting closer every day.

When I see the Tom Izzos , Jay Wrights & perhaps Rick P’s of world lose a bounce in their steps, it concerns me. I am not sure a happy medium with all this “stuff” is in the cards, $ genie is out of the bottle. Putting soap box away. 😇

I remember during Lavin's tenure, we beat Lehigh who had CH McCollum. They went on to make the NCAA tournament. This will never happen again. After his Sophmore season, there would have been a bidding war. Each year, players become free agents, and can go to the highest bidder. Michigan would probably be a Big 10 favorite if Hunter Dickerson was still there. Rumor is he got 2 million from Kansas, smh. The NIL is destroying college sports as we know it.

It is the NCAA's fault for coming up with this idea without putting any limits on it.

The 2 elements that are killing college sports is sport betting and NIL/transfer rules. No amateur athletics any more.

This is all the NCAA’s fault. They’ve been a reactive organization for the last 40 years. The courts exposed them and now they’re a rudderless organization. The players should’ve been paid and had revenue sharing this whole time, but without any actual guard rails around freedom of movement, it is a preposterous situation.

The courts are right — who is the NCAA to limit a student & not an employee from transferring?

Transfer limits and the things we want will only happen once a CBA is signed.
