Around College Basketball

Hated the call when it was made. On replay thought the contact occurred up top and couldn’t really argue with it. He did however like you said, kick his feet out to sell it more.

Disagree, defensive player went completely straight up m, no lean into the offensive player at all, which is his space, the shooter created the contact on the hand with his follow through, a no call. Plus the ref appeared to raise his hand on the contact below but that is certainly debatable. But the defense was textbook perfect IMO and all contact was initiated by the offense.

Utah 90 UCLA 44

Brandon Williams……2 points, 1 rebound in a blowout loss to Utah. I would guess his NIL value would be taking a hit.

I did not see today’s game as I was on the road to Virginia taking my youngest back to school for the spring semester. I got to my hotel room and the game should have been well into the second half but decided not to turn it on. Glad I made that decision.

I did go to the Appalachian State vs James Madison game which despite the low score, was very entertaining. JMU, who just dropped out of the top 25, lost by four after being down by 14 in the first half (got it within 5 at the half and the last seven minutes of the game was back and forth between ties, one and two point leads by both sides until App State closed it out with two free throws with about 9 seconds left. The crowd was loud and impressive despite the students not being fully back yet (dorms don’t open until Sunday morning and classes start on Tuesday).

I continue to be impressed by their on campus Arena, the Atlantic Union Bank Center which holds 8,500 and opened in November 2020. It replaced a 6,000 seat arena which is still standing and in use. Except for the student section in one end zone (bleachers) all seats have seat backs. The ones on the main level behind and opposite the benches are cushioned while the ones opposite the student section and on the upper level are plastic. Seats are roomy and comfortable and you have room in the aisle so your legs are not against the seat in front of you. I wish we had space for such an arena. I am so jealous.

Maryland takes down #10 Illinois on the road in Champagne. I think for the NCAA Tournament I’m just going put $50 on every underdog.

West Virginia takes out #25 Texas.
On top of getting Kriisa back from suspension and Akok back from injury, they are now playing Battle and Farrakhan after the court ruling on transfers.

Battle is averaging 20 and Farrakhan is averaging 12.

Jesse Edwards has been out for them since shortly after our game and is returning soon. They might make some noise with a full roster and really boost our metrics. That would be great.

Another zero impact game for Zed Key
Scored 11 off the bench two games ago but his time on the court has dwindled this year with Ohio Stat going with to taller players at the two power positions with one being a true rim protector.

I like their soph center a lot. Maybe we could get him to transfer instead :) He could really make a jump next year.

They play a shooter at the 4, Jamison Battle. 44.4% from 3 on 7 attempts per game and 91% from the line.

Holtmann is using Key purely as a backup center. I think he could easily play some 4 too especially next to a smaller 5 like Zuby. He needs to get out of Ohio State next year for sure.

Smaller version of Wes Unseld. Would have played over Dan Cornelius and could have played the four once Paultz became eligible. All-American at Davidson and played in ABA.
Celtics fan who worked with substance use disorder for more than fifty years, mentioning Maryland always takes me to Len Bias.
