Around College Basketball

Rick Pitino has been to 7 Final Fours. Name me the big guy on any one of those teams that was better than "fine". Marty Conlon? Nazr Muhammad? Gorgui Dieng?

In his system you don't need stud bigs. "Fine" is fine. Zed and an improved Zuby with Maker/Drissa giving you 10-12 minutes off the bench would be more than enough. Another solid big wouldn't hurt but to say without a stud we wont compete is a little over the top IMHO.

In fairness, I will say I'm higher on Zuby than most around here. I expect him to make major strides this year into next. That dude has stuff you can't teach: elite athleticism and non-stop motor. He runs the floor like a f***ing gazelle. You can teach guys like him to shoot. You can't teach them to want every damn rebound or to run the floor like Obi Toppin. They either have that or they don't and he has it.
I see a lot in Zuby

If we’re getting 10-12 minutes from Traore next year then something has gone seriously wrong. He’s a good kid and nice story, but he’s not a high major player.

Pitino is going to reload the front court with more depth.

I meant 10-12 combined from those two. If Traore got recruited over and never saw the court again I'd be fine w it.

The last two guys you mentioned in that paragraph had long NBA careers. They were more than fine as all around players.
In the best of Muhammad's 3 years he averaged 12 and 7
Dieng never averaged more than 10ppg (granted he was a rebounding and blocked shot machine)

In college both were solid role players. As they were in the NBA. Which, as I said, is all that's required in Pitino's system.

I think you are selling them short. They were both first round picks. Most of the highest ranked players Pitino ever had were big men. Samardo Samuels was the highest ranked kid he ever had Louisville (#4 RSCI). Behanan was #24, David Padgett was #7, Derrick Character was #17, and Juan Pallacios was #16.

At Kentucky it was McCarty, Mashburn, Muhammad, Scott Padgett, Magloire, Mark Pope, Antoine Walker, etc.

After watching the Nova/St. Joe's game, I did think it would be cool if NYC did something similar with having each borough represented. Why not have something similar, and then have it culminate at MSG (Holiday Festival) or Barclays? STJ, Fordham, Columbia, LIU, and Wagner each represent a borough. As long as this was our allotment of cupcakes for the OOC, it would at least make them more intriguing.

Big Five is a long time Philly tradition that Rollie tried to kill while at Nova. It was not one of his smarter moves and garnered much negativity.

You would not draw the same interest here as you can’t even sell out MSG with a double header of local teams. Back when NYC was the place to be and everyone wanted to come play at the old MSG and New York had great programs like St. John’s, CCNY, NYU, LIU and other good programs like Manhattan and Fordham it would have worked and those teams played each other anyway. Now, nah.
