Around College Basketball (non-Big East) 2018/19

Basketball players are such p*ssies. The old hold me back routine. If you’re that mad no man can hold you back with a simple waist grab.

Tennessee doesn't have a top 100 player on their current roster, and Rick Barnes turned them into a top five caliber team. Testament to their developmental program & ability to evaluate.

Still don't trust that guy in crunch time in March/April. But I don't hate them so won't mind being wrong and I'll probably have them in Final Four anyway.

Just saw Virginia absolutely destroy Syracuse. Our coaching staff needs to take notes and show a tape of this performance to the team. Classic demolition of a 2-3 zone.

It helps when you can shoot 18 of 25 from 3 as UVa did. We can also learn from their defensive efforts as they held Syracuse to 19 points in the 2nd half.

Guy was 8/10, not a bad percentage!

Regarding Virginia's "defense":

1. Syracuse's reputation is that of being one of the poorest offensive teams in major college basketball. They are going to the NCAA Tournament, but they have had many games this year where they simply can't put the ball in the net.

2. Virginia's best "defense" is usually their control the ball, and pound it, offense. They hold teams in the 50s, because they hold the ball. We are not a good team when we hold the ball. We're much better in the fastbreak situation. So, I don't know what exactly we can learn from them.

Not UVa's "defense", their defensive efforts. They held 25th ranked Wisconsin to 46 points, 9th ranked Va Tech to 59, 16th ranked Louisville to 52. Yesterday, we gave up 92 points to DePaul. Our defensive efforts usually result in a foul being called.

Numbers they usually achieve primarily by holding the ball of offense, and limiting the number of possessions.

Yes, they generally do a good job on the defensive side of the ball. You have to, when you can't recruit great athletes because of high academic standards (which is a handicap that UVA faces).

But, pointing out the opponents point total as the sole reason for them being a great defensive team is wrong, IMO. That's like saying it was all about the defense for Princeton in the 70s and 80s. It is primarily the offense that is responsible for those totals. Are they good on defense? Well yes, but that's also might be because they have to play less defense (WRT time) then any other major team in America, because of the offense. They can't wear down.

Valid points, but we can agree to partially disagree. Regarding UVa's recruiting of athletes, there are currently 4 members of NBA rosters who played for current coach Tony Bennett; J. Anderson (Atl), M. Brogdon (Mil), J. Harris (Brook), M. Scott (Phil).

The greatest thing about the Va defense is that the effort is tremendous. They don't appear to have great athletes but their success is due mainly to not letting up on defense even when their shots are not falling. They don't let up.
On the other hand if SJU had held De Paul to fifty in the second half they would have won. They are disintegrating before our eyes.

[quote="Paultzman" post=327959]Suspect UVA won’t fall early again this year in Dance. Bennett is another son of a coach who is a smart, energetic gym rat who selectively recruits kids who can defend as a priority.

They didn’t just fall early last year, they were the first 1 seed to lose to a 16 seed in tournament history. And they lost by 20. On Charlotte.

They will lose this year again if matched up with wrong team and if it happens Bennett will be in some trouble with fans.

They played terrible either way but not having Deandre Hunter probably made just a wee bit of difference.

And give me a break with this matchup nonsense even you don't actually think they will lose a 1-16 game again...

Losing to a 16 seed is nearly impossible. Please show me where I said that would happen. You make wild inferences and then attribute them to others as if they were their arguments. It’s really bizarre.

As a #1 seed the objective expectation is to make the Final Four. Most fans believe #1 seeds should make the Sweet 16 effortlessly and the Elite Eight with relative ease. Any loss prior to the Elite Eight would be a massive failure for a 27-2 team ranked #2 in the nation 10 days before selection Sunday—especially one that experienced a truly historic upset in the tournament the prior year.

UVA would need favorable matchups to avoid an upset this year IMO. They play Eight players, rely heavily on outside shooting, and they are quite unathletic in the back court.

I think we matchup with them well and was hoping to see them in the second round but we would need at least one win to get back to an 8/9 (and win in the first round for the first time in 18 years).

Thoughts with the kid. This is serious stuff.
