I think Sampson or Wojo get my vote. I expected most everyone else to have a good season. I'd add Barnes, but he's almost a lock to boneheadedly blow a close game as soon as it's tournament time.

I’d go Sampson as well. Their star player from last year graduated and they just keep winning with a very balanced team. They have six players who average 6-8 PPG. And their two best players average 16 and 14 respectively. Extremely balanced and well coached team

St. John’s commit Cam Mack had something to say about this list:

Too many seemingly soul-crushing losses to be there, unfortunately. Luckily, they usually turned out to be non-soul crushing by the next game, but there were too many stinkers to be included. If he does a good job with less-heralded team next season name may pop up.

I’d go with Painter. He lost most of the team from last year and is challenging for a Big Ten title.

I agree leading candidates right now would be Sampson & Wojo in that order. If Texas Tech becomes first team other than Kansas to win Big 12 regular season title in 18 years, Beard may get some votes too as I don't recall Tech being rated that highly in pre-season polls (but could be wrong there).

Good point on Painter Porgyman. I completely overlooked that one - Purdue has also been a surprise.

Not giving it to Sampson even if he went undefeated right through the NC. Twice caught cheating at Oklahoma and Indiana resulting in him losing his job. Lied about the cheating after being caught. How do you trust he didn't'cheat to get Houston where they are? Even if he didn't I for one wouldn't reward him with a coach of the year award. Plenty of other worthy candidates without his history.

100% agree. The fact that cheaters so often not only get multiple chances but also continue to have success in this sport doesn't really teach anyone to not cheat.

Assume it is because they are no longer NY’s team[/quote]

Give Cuse credit for seemingly always going deep in the tourney even when they have no expectations and a poor seed. But other than that, their regular seasons really haven't been anything special overall since leaving the Big East. I still remember when I was at Marist (07-11) they were consistently a top 10 team. They got way more hype nationally than they do now IMO. They used to be right there with Duke, UNC, etc. on ESPN getting attention as a blue blood. Now they're just another ACC team in the mish mosh that gets a big win every so often but doesn't dominate anymore. Mind you, they're having pretty pedestrian (by their standards) regular seasons while they still have their HOF coach Boeheim. When he retires soon, it will be interesting to see if they fall back even further. Hopkins no longer an option either since he's at Washington. I know most casual fans will say "dude they make deep runs like every year in the tourney" but IMO the regular season should still count for more. Anyone can do anything in a single-elimination tourney.

I will be thrilled to win in that single-elimination tourney. In the last 30 years Syracuse has passed us by leaps and bounds. I dream of getting to their level. Is it possible, maybe, but it would take one hell of a great staff to get there.

Cal who was winless in PAC 12 play beat first place Washington 76-73 last night.

With Kentucky losing today, ACC will have 2, 3 & 4 spots Monday (Virginia, Duke, UNC). Three top ten teams lost today; Kentucky., Michigan State & Houston. Texas Tech will be in top 10 come Monday.

Let's go Rutgers! A win on the road against Iowa would help their NET a lot. Currently up by 14 in the 2nd.

Late game of interest has Nevada at Utah St. Nevada is only a two point favorite. Utah St. is very solid , well-coached team that may very well get a second bid for the MWC. That would mean one fewer at-large bid available. Game on CBS sports, at 8:30, ET. The aggies have a great 10,000 seat campus gym and it gives them a real advantage.

Rutgers beats #22 Iowa by 14 on the road!
Princeton’s chance at winning the Ivy slipping away down 59-51 @Harvard.

Cal beat the top PAC-12 team Washington as previously noted.

Bowling Green won #20 yesterday.

VCU beat Richmond and is making a surge to a potential top 30 NET ranking.
