Around College Basketball (non-Big East) 2018/19

Just hoping UConn's troubles this season works against Precious going there.
247Sports still has it Uconn 62% / St. John's 12% & 'Cuse & Memphis also 12% each.
Maybe Kansas moves in...?
Ugh.
Keep winning, and 'they' will come.

Duke has announced that freshman point guard Tre Jones has suffered an AC joint separation is out indefinitely, per release. Huge ACC news.

I agree with many that Jones is huge piece for Duke & really only real PG
on team. His assists to turnover ratio was super last time I looked. Perfect heady orchestrator for Duke.
If we have Ponds and they don't have Jones, they probably can't beat us. .
Right they just took Syracuse to OT without BOTH Cam Reddish and Jones, a Syracuse team that you proclaimed is a Elite 8 team with their big guards a few posts before.

But no way Duke can beat SJU without Jones and assuming Ponds returns. Really? You think Duke is that handicapped against SJU, that there is "NO WAY" they can beat SJU at home? Tre Jones is that important against SJU? I presume the oddsmakers would agree with you and make SJU a 5-6 point favorite at Duke then?

Come on...
Duke has one player under 6'6 that plays and he averages less than 1 pt and 1 assist. I don't think you can cover Ponds with 6'6/6'7 freshmen regardless of how wildly talented they are. Howard and Battle are 6'5+ and easier to handle for the tall Duke perimeter players. A zone would certainly help, but Coach K has be been reluctant if not stubborn about playing man in the past.

I think we win. That is my opinion. You an have your own...you do realize that, right?

Michigan State just won their 19th straight Big Ten game tonight at Nebraska. That's stronger than farm excrement.

UConn athletic department in 2018: generated $40 million in revenue, spent $81 million in expenses
Sorry Room112 but that business model is not sustainable. They cannot continue to loose $40 million per annum. Something will have to give sooner than later. The taxpayers won’t stand for it nor will the academic body of the university. Imagine if Kevin Ollie wins his wrongful dismissal suit against the school, they could be on the hook for another $10 million.
Diificult decisions will have to be made in Storrs.

Right now imho the 3 most complete teams in CBB are Mich St, Tennessee and Virginia. Lots of really good teams including Michigan, Duke-obviously, Gonzaga, Kansas etc...

Cassius Winston is REALLY good.

I agree here. 3 beat teams. Michigan State is an offensive force which isn’t characteristic of them.

They should just drop men's basketball and focus on football.

But on the other hand …

This is what I've been saying...UConn is spending on its athletics as if they're in a major conference, however they're in the AAC. They can't sustain having FBS football. Many people say "they will never drop it or demote it, too much money invested". They don't have a choice at a certain point. Their boat is taking on tons of water and they can only use buckets for so long before it sinks. They are at a crossroads and they're still dumb enough to think they can be Penn State. Again, they lose tons of money and there is just not enough interest in college football in the Northeast. No recruiting beds either. If anyone in the tri-state cares about college football, they're likely just frontrunners rooting for ND, Michigan, Bama, etc. For how close we are to Penn State, you don't even see much Penn State stuff and they've been very successful. Rutgers had a year when they were ranked and still nobody cared. What does that tell you?

Oh I totally agree. But how many schools can simply choose to subsidize 40 million each year that they choose?

I dunno, I look at it a little different. Connecticut has no pro sports teams. UConn is basically a main draw. When they team was decent years ago, students were showing up for games. That's one thing UConn has is a true campus community feel. They bus kids to these games since the stadium is off campus. Theoretically, if people in the Northeast follow the NFL, they're football fans. Why wouldn't they care about college football?

The law suits and insurance premiums will make fielding a football team prohibitive for programs like Uconn within ten years.

Uconn is in a horrible spot right now. They cannot afford for Hurley to be a bust or they are done. It doesn't look great for them next year either. From what I can tell from the outside, Jalen Adams is all they've got and he is a former top 20 prospect who graduates this year. They lose 4th leading scorer Tarin Smith (and Yakwe--which might be a plus), and I think there will be some transfers like Sid Wilson and possibly Alterique Gilbert.

The do have some top-flight freshmen coming in next year, I'm sorry to say.

College football has no hype in the tri-state area. Like you said, NFL yes but not college. The culture is just different. In the South, football is a religion. There are tons of hot recruiting beds down there and there's massive interest. That's why a school like UCF can be successful. There's enough good recruits in FL to go to FSU, Florida, and still have some leftovers for UCF. In the tri-state there's barely any real talent. Basketball is a totally different story. I also think Rutgers to the B1G is a cautionary tale in realignment. Major football conferences see they're perennial losers and they won't want UConn who is much worse. UConn is Stony Brook pretending it's Penn State. They aren't fooling anyone.

I dunno man, I don't think they're anywhere close to being done, even if Hurley is a failure. Think about this for a moment. Since we won our last NCAA tournament game, UConn was won 4 NATIONAL TITLES. That's not NCAA tournament games, that's titles! So how is St. John's not done? UConn has the resources, the facilities, the fan support, local broadcasting in CT and also on SNY, and the recent history of success. Despite being in that crappy conference, that have more than enough to overcome that. When you have money, things can turn around very quickly.
