Around College Basketball 2019/20 Season
Tough break

UNC freshman Cole Anthony is expected to miss the next 4-6 weeks after undergoing an arthroscopic procedure to treat a partially torn meniscus in his right knee yesterday, school announced.

Sources told me that the plan is still for him to come back and play this season.

That’s too bad for the kid. I wonder if he really will come back and play. He’s got nice pro prospects and meniscus tear gonna take quite a while to feel better ala “Showtime”. He was carrying that UNC team too.
Nico Mannion had a nightmare shooting game against Gonzaga. He shot 3-20 from the field. Was missing everything but just kept firing. Despite that as I was watching him bring the ball up, all I was thinking was how fast he is with the ball and what great court awareness he has. The bad shooting was an anomaly, I know that kid can shoot. Will be a true test of our new harassing defense to see if we can fluster him into some turnovers.

The three freshman: Mannion, Nnjai and Hall are a really good trio. What a great recruiting class for Sean Miller (I know, I know...) Even Chase Jeter is looking more comfortable and productive in his role there. Really happy we scheduled this game regardless of outcome. Our schedule needed it. Always good to test yourself against a top team away from home.
A hell of a lot of shots for a point guard. Seemed to drive left more and finds the open man.Have to stay with him on his drives to the basket, no fouls, let him give up the ball.Nnaji, athletic, really active around boards. Going to be a tough stop for us.Better be prepared to box him and Jeter.out.

Does anyone know if college athletes are insured against injury, as a protection for future earnings?

Thought they were playing St. John's again and ran into a buzz saw.

I was not impressed with ASU. We were the better team for a big chunk of the game, but we sucked down the stretch.

“The story of the night for the losers was reserve junior guard Alonzo Verge, Jr. who came into the night averaging 9.6 points per game. Verge scored 43 of the Sun Devils 56 points including 30 of the team's 37 second half points. Only two of the other 11 ASU players scored in the game.

Verge was 18-29 from the floor while everybody else shot 5-35.”

Potential No. 1 pick James Wiseman of Memphis has left the university, will sign with an agent and begin preparing for 2020 NBA draft.

Parents can take out insurance on potential loss of earnings if injured in college.

The Memphis/Wiseman saga was a complete farce from the very beginning. Memphis hires Penny to build the best college program that Penny’s money-and he’s got a lot of it-can buy. Penny risks the entire season by playing a kid who is suspended by the NCAA. Then the kid goes and bails on Penny and on his teammates, probably after pocketing a whole boatload of Penny’s dollars. The kid should have been in the NBA already, and would have been if not for the archaic rule of forcing a kid to attend college for 1 year. The entire system is joke from top to bottom.

Weird timing, he already waited out most of his suspension. Maybe academic issues with the semester ending now?

Well said, some kids are just not cut out for college or need to make some money to help families. “One & done” is a disaster.

I’d also add, some kids are ready for the NBA and don’t need to waste a year in college. Microsoft doesn’t require the computer nerd/genius to attend college for a year. Pro basketball should be the same way.

Didn’t he also have to repay the $11K he “borrowed” in order to play for Memphis again? We all knew that wasn’t going to happen legitimately. If he can’t pay the penalty, then this seems like a logical outcome. And I totally agree that this whole thing was a farce.

Heard player and or his people were blaming Memphis for this whole fiasco thinking they should have known the loan would cause eligibility problems. Think about it, Penny lends family money because of the kids ability then recruits him to his school a year or two later. No advantage there right, yeah right. Remember we couldn't recruit a kid a few years ago because he was previously coached by our DOBO because that is though of as a recruiting advantage.

For those of you who think that all Wiseman got was 11K, I've got a bridge for sale.

I agree with you. It was never a clean recruitment. And then to think that he needed $11K (or to Monty’s point, whatever the amount was that he really received) because his family couldn’t afford the move, but somehow would now have the ability to repay the $11K is just foolish. Like many, I didn’t want to see Memphis buy their way to a title, and now it looks like we won’t have to. We can just keep watching Kansas do it :silly:

Spot on. Yet, when I watch Kansas you hear very little or anything about the ongoing scandal. All the apologists for the coaching club and “chosen” schools act like nothing happened or will happen. NCAA conveniently deferring until the off-season. Don’t want to interfere with March Madness!
