Around College Basketball 2019/20 Season

Goodman

Louisville has temporarily suspended all men's basketball voluntary activities for two weeks after two members of the program tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.
No specifics have come out yet but are the people who tested positive asymptomatic? In most of these cases, they are.

If they are going to put a halt on everything anytime a person with no symptoms tests positive then there is no way they will have a season.
I didn’t want to have to respond to any of your numerous posts saying the same thing but I don’t think you understand how any of this works.

These healthy college kids are largely asymptomatic, yes, but when they go out into the world or go home to their families, they can still spread the virus. So yes, they are more than likely to be fine, but the next person they come in contact with might not be.

Stay home, wear a mask if you have to go out, and stop the spread as quickly as possible. That’s the only way to have any sports this fall.

I know exactly how this works. And i am saying if you are going to test healthy people and then shut down your program when someone with no symptoms tests positive, I do not believe there will be a season.

Yea there probably won’t be. And its depressing to consider that possibility.

I keep thinking about it and I don’t see how St. John’s puts a semester together considering they are a commuter school first and foremost.

They have kids coming to and from campus and going home to their families every night. It’s going to be harder for them to do this then say a school like Penn St or a big college like that where almost everyone lives there.

Colleges cutting sports after a few months of this and they want the schools to pay athletes with more than just scholarships?? Laughable.

This is very sad but just the tip of the iceberg. If there are no sports for the 2020-21 school year, the fur will really fly

Sources: Ivy League programs have been informed that fall sports have been cancelled.

The conference will not entertain any sports being played until after January 1st.

Winter sports will have an update in mid-July on their respective practice schedules.

Patriot League could follow suit. ADs and presidents will meet Friday.

If non-conference ends up getting cancelled and only conference games are played in January, what does that mean for the Big East in regards to NET/bids? We better receive the same respect as the P5 given we have been a top 3/4 league for the past 5 years.

Something awesome would be if we used last year's OOC NET. The Big East and St. John's would be extremely strong again. Doubt that'd happen though as some conferences (such as the ACC) would object.

This is really, really scary because Stanford has a shit ton of money and a shit ton of generous millionaire and billionaire alumni. And I have firsthand knowledge that they've been generous in the past with a lot of the sports listed there.

I just watched PTI. They mentioned the fact that Stanford has the 3rd highest endowment in the nation only behind Harvard and Yale. While most schools have 18-24 sports, Stanford was supporting 36 sports for many, many years.

As you noted, Paultzman, the Ivy League did not just cancel fall sports. They cancelled all sporting events until at least January 1, 2021. That means that lots of D-1 basketball teams now have holes in their non conference schedules, as games they scheduled against the Ivies in November and December will not be played.

Locally, Hofstra lost one non league game and Stony Brook lost two because of this decision

Right now we would only be able to play teams in NYS, NJ and Conn and a few other states as NYS says people coming from another state must quarantine for 14 days AND if we were to go on the road to one of such states, our players would be subject to a 14 day quarantine when they returned.

Given that a "revised" OOC schedule would be necessitated to avoid the quarantine issues.

Right now, I see minimal play in 1st semester. Also, attendance would be limited given current Phase 4 limits of "gatherings of 50 max.

In case, of play after January only, NCAA could decide on holding a "true" national tournament with all D-1 teams playing in it.

As an aside, the current outbreak in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia has made that state mandate lock downs and its borders have been closed to other states. From a sports perspective this has impacted the Australian Football League (Aussie Rules). All Victorian teams have left their home state and will only play games in New South Wales. South Australia has placed restrictions on Victorian teams in that they have imposed a 14 day quarantine on them and also the 2 teams from SA would have to quarantine when they return.

If you paid them, you could justify having them on campus when other students are not allowed. They'd be employees.

As for cutting non revenue generating sports, that's the first thing to go when a school's revenues decline.

In the grand scheme of things not the end of the world.
However, I truly feel terrible for these kids and coaches who have spent a lifetime practicing and perfecting their skills in these low profile, non - glamour sports, where they are truly student athletes and at a great academic institution. If Stanford, with a huge endowment is cutting sports, I fear what will occur at the other 99% of Division 1 Schools that have no where near the endowment that Stanford does. Terrible times coming for universities.
