Anderson - is he really the guy ?

Again then you are not holding Anderson to the same standard you held Lavin or Mullin.

You don't advocate to fire them after 5 and 4 years and then claim that Anderson needs more time because your expectations are low.  That is ridiculous.  And you have no idea what the program would be like if Anderson left.  How can you make a ridiculous statement like you are sure the program would be in better shape if/when he leaves.

He literally rolled over the entire roster in 2 years.  9 kids transferred last year alone.  What if a coach had to take over this year from him, they would have been left with a handful of kids.  How is that leaving the program better off?

Again with you it is not that you can't have a reasonable post it is that you hold one coach to one standard and disregard the standard you held for others.

If this is YOUR STANDARD you should have been screaming from the mountain tops that SJU made a mistake not extending Lavin.

lawmanfan post=454832
I figure this group can get us to respectability (or mediocrity if you prefer) and then if it turns out they can't take us any farther, at least the program will be in a better position to take the next step than it has been following any of our previous hires except for Fraschilla.

If my expectation was that we would consistently be a top-4 program in the conference by Year 3 or 4, then to be honest my confidence level would probably be more like a 3 than a 6.  I WANT us to be there, I just don't see how we get there right away for a variety of reasons.

Like with so much else in life—Hurry up and wait is applicable here.

Again if you are going to argue the patience angle with Anderson then why did we not show more patience with a guy who recruited significantly better and won more?

Why wasn't Lavin given the same treatment from this poster that he expects all of us to have for Anderson?

And by the way I am not defending Lavin, I think he was a disappointment and underperformed.  And had no issues with moving on, just in retrospect preferred they went after a different coach.

But my point stands.  And btw Lavin in his first 3 years coached against Bob Huggins, Jim Calhoun, Jim Boeheim, Rick Pitino etc

Being a prized recruit and getting wooed by many schools for many kids one if the most exciting things they ever will do.

it's  also something most kids and their families do without any prior experience.   I don't envy them.

As AJ said every kid wants the best path to the NBA.   The most successful college programs have an edge, the best salesmen have an edge, the best facilities have an edge.

Do not know why he would want to come here. Bottom line you are hired for a few mill, you should at least have a top 1 or 2 players in your bag that you can bring with you. In the corp world you hirer a top employee because you already know what he brings and what he can do for your company, not hope and let’s see what he can do.
This has been a great job for a coach to make a good salary  with average expectation
Unless we are going to make the commitment  we will stay where we are like we have none for the  last 20 yrs or so.
If that is the direction than we have no choice but to live with it

You think this is bad, how about the free ride the coach of the women's team is on.  The difference is virtually no one cares about them...and fewer and fewer fans care about the men.

Anderson is far from a great coach, but he's a great face of the university.  His teams will never be consistently more than than what they are today.  I'm just savoring any good wins and moving on from what used to be gut wrenching losses.  We are...

I'll tell you why he should come here.

Jay Wright told a story at Villanova at their senior breakfast to students and their parents.   Annually he is the keynote speaker, and it is great that he is.    In 2009, he missed the event, by accident because he slept through it.  The reason was a recruiting trip he made:to Nigeria to visit the family of Yarou Mouphtaou, who subsequently committed to Villanova.

After a very long trip to his hometown of Benin -, one that took approximately 24 hours to complete, Jay arrived at the home of Yarou's parents.    Luckily for Wright,  a relative of Yarou met Wright at the door, and gave him advice and a stern warning.  "If you want Yarou to go to your school when you go in there, do NOT mention basketball.   His parents are most concerned about the education he will receive and what it will be like for him to be a student at Villanova."

Wright tells the story that he quickly had to shift gears in his head when he entered the home, as a huge part of his pitch was about basketball at Villanova.   He went in, and the great communicator Wright is, sold Mouphtaou's parents on Villanova the school, and in doing so, Coach Wright as the person.

Jay felt so bad aobut missing the breakfast that he asked if he could be the keynote speaker at 2009 graduation to make it up to the class of 2009.  Of course the school said yes.

I know some coaches personally, and some are really amazingly good people.  Tim Cluess is one of them, and if not for his illness, I think would have been a great coach here.  Coach Anderson is one of those people, a man who not only develops a Brandon Gardner, the basketball player, but will also develop Brandon Gardner, the man.   I've only heard Pau Pressey and TJ Cleveland at pregame briefings, but from their comments, they are also the kind of people who care about kids way beyond basketball.

It's very hard to sell integrity and caring that a coach provides.   However, it's much more difficult to actually deliver it than sell it.   I believe that about W's and L's, CMA is that type of person and a huge reason Gardner should come here.

Forty years ago I was at graduation commencement for my now wife, then girlfriend at Allumni Hall.   In the bleachers, in cap and gown, cap awkwardly tilted off center by accident was a kid who looked so proud to be there to celebrate what he had accomplished.   I'm certain his family was equally proud of this young man.   He went on to a fine career, a brief one in the NBA, and a longer one as a high school assistant principal until his tragically early death.   His name was Reggie Carter.

That is why Brandon Gardner should come to St. John's..

Sounds like you’ve given up? I wish I could but what what irks at me are those that justify underachieving by stating that the coach is a nice guy or good role model. Norm Roberts had such accolades and how did that work out? There are many question marks with this current staff that may not be answered in the near future. By all accounts Anderson is a nice guy, and on the surface  seems to care about his kids. Why so many left last year including many potential starters will remain a mystery. But at  $2,000,000 plus, Coach A was not hired to be a nice guy but to develop a successful hoops program. By that and that only should he be judged.

It is not a mystery at all. One left to be closer to home and the others left to get more playing time.

Unfortunately for a high level recruit a coach’s integrity or the lack thereof is one of the last reasons why a kid would pick a school , if it comes into the equation at all.
Case in point Bruce Pearl, Scott Drew , Jim Boeheim , this boards favourite Rick Pitino and the list is very long.
There are a multitude of far more important factors in a kid selecting a school than the integrity of the head coach.
now for lower level 3 star kids and below the coaches integrity is somewhat higher on the list.

1.  You mentioned TJ Cleveland in your above post.  What are TJ’s duties, responsibilities and accomplishments as Associate Head Coast during the past several years at St. John’s ?

2.  If academics are important to  Brandon  Gardner and his family then he should select Yale University which is recruiting him and has offered him admission.

Wally world's mom fought with him to accept a scholarship offer from Harvard. He told his mom he would never make the NBA. He turned out to be right.

So you and rmn are saying brandon should not come here, correct?

Obviously their only factor is not academics. It is one of several. Otherwise they wouldn’t be looking at the other schools too. Beast’s very eloquent post wasn’t just about academics. He would do very well at St John’s in his personal, academic, and athletic growth.

Pretty sure everyone has adequately made their points here. We probably have unanimity that if he wants to leverage his basketball talent for a high-end education, then absent an offer from Stanford he should probably go to Yale.

If he wants to maximize his basketball possibilities, then he will have different options.

I would be surprised and disappointed if anyone had a different opinion then that St John's would be a fine place for him to explore and hopefully maximize his basketball possibilities, it being a program with a coach who is a fine person who has shown the ability to develop players and has had more than one continue on to the NBA.

So I'm going to assume everyone agrees with all of that and can we please move on, bearing in mind that a primary purpose of the site is to support the program and not engage in repetitive negativity that contradicts that purpose.

There is enough of that on the hashtag and enough other places where you can dump on the coach, program and players to your heart's content - though personally I would prefer you not since I actually root for the program, coach and players to succeed.

Beast , I liked your Reggie Carter story .  It’s was nice to have him in my thoughts as a result .  Reggie was a great All Amercan for us back on the late 70’s .  He thrilled us many times . Especially a first round Win over the Spanarkel Duke team in a big upset .  Classy player  and person .

Didn’t know him. But He really came across as a really unassuming person.remember him coming to Alumni Hall, as a Hawaii Warrior in his freshmen year (with Henry Hollingsworth) in those Hawaiian shorts.

Truly a shame that he is not around any longer.

I played against Carter (and McKoy.) I didn't fare well. I enjoyed watching them together a few years later at SJU.much more.
