Amar Has Returned

All this stuff about guys being fixated about who "coaches" or draws up plays during time outs as well as what Mullin wears or sits or if he seems disengaged is pretty funny stuff,

I suggest you reread the Newsday interview from a few weeks ago where he addressed the time out/coaching thing. If you still have an issue then it's on you.

But, then again, this is a message board, and particularly during off season we have to discuss something.

You know what I find funny is that a considerable number of people here think its about delegation or who draws up the plays. If you paid attention, Mullin doesn't even confer with coaches during the game. So if St. Jean decides to go man in the huddle, Mullin appears unaware. If he wants Mussini to take more shots off screens, Mullin is unaware, if he is reinforcing a simple fundamental, like boxing out, flashing to a spot to catch and shoot, or looking to pass upcourt off a rebound instead of putting the ball on the floor, Mullin is unaware. He simply is often not in the same zipcode when the team huddles for a time out. Of course, other times he saunters over to the huddle.

Lots of guys carry the clip board. Mahoney did it for Lou, and countless other assistants do. But I've never seen any head coach quite so removed from in game coaching. I mean, if you aren't coaching during the game, what the heck are you doing on the sidelines?

I am a Mullin guy and that is how it appeared to me as well. Again win and it is a non issue, but not sure we are going to win for a while so this will linger if he has the same bench demeanor going forward.

Look, it isn't like Mullin isn't watching. Obviously he spends a lot of time jawing at refs about calls. I don't expect him to coach in the style of Boeheim, Wright, Coach K, or be anyone but Chris Mullin. But I'd love to see him engaged with players, intensely spelling out something to them as they wait to enter a game, animated in the huddle, etc. If St. Jean is his top guy on the bench, effing sit next to him, and confer throughout the game. If it's Slice, then its Slice.

You are correct. Win and no one will care. But my take is that if we are going to win, and I mean not just 20 wins, one and done in the dance, but be a razor sharp, competitive program who gives teams every thing they can handle and more, than there needs to be a captain of this ship. Last season, Chris was an apprentice coach. I have friends who have coached in HS and college, and believe it or not, they went to coaches clinics to learn. Chris is at a disadvantage, because its hard to go to a clinic when you are a D1 head coach. But he can ask some pretty notable head coaches, active and retired, to critique him. I'm just hoping we see better organization on the sidelines. I for one, would rather see Chris at the helm than anyone else in college basketball if we can win a little and if he can coach.

Count me among the seeming small number of posters on Redmen.com that believes that Mullin & company did solid job last season with assembling the then best available left overs and mixing them with the 3 left overs from Lavin.

The only issue I have on the recruiting front so far is that I would have thought that Slice would have made more headway by now in reeling in some big fish. After all, that is what he was brought here to do. Hopefully he will in the near future.

Truthfully going forward I have two fears
1. Will our staff improve, and not criticizing, but just hoping they do. Must be a much greater commitment to defense.
2. Slice's role going forward. If we are really going to play the junior college, European and transfer game as we have done to date, and I am not saying we should not continue that route going forward, it really minimizes or does not play to his strengths, but rather those of Matt.

I am sure they would like to get stud HS players. I just don't think that is something that will happen often. That is really not a knock on Slice but more on the current situation. ST John's is always going to be at a disadvantage in recruiting and that is especially true during down periods on the court. If things get better you hope we would get some of the local guys to stay. Unfortunately there are not a lot of those guysaround anymore.

If Slice does eventually leave I think it would be because of the frustration over the inability to recruit at ST John's rather than any jealousy about Matt or falling out with Mullin.

Apparently Slice has a guaranteed contract with at least four years remaining. If his boss wants him out, can SJU afford a buyout? Not an easy answer in my opinion. Secondly, if Slice wants to leave how many opportunities are there out there right now at his salary?

Solution - Mullin finds a way to diffuse situation & gets everybody on same page. I find it hard to believe this issue can't be resolved to everyone's relative satisfaction. Hopefully it already has been put to rest. With Slice's contacts & experience in the college game, it would be a shame to lose him.

This question might be buried already somewhere in the previous topics/posts, but what exactly started the "stress" or " rift" between Slice and (?) CM/others???
Ego?

Granted I haven't paid attention too much lately but did we hire Dick Harter or Rick Carslisle on the bench ?

So, you don't think the staff is capable? God, if only Mullin hadn't worn those shoes and sat on the table.

You gotta admit. Those shoes look pretty ugly with a suit. :) Worst choice since OJ decided to wear Bruno Magli's to the murder. Then again, Keady reminded me of Herman Munster with his sneakers and suit

I sit right across from him at CA, and am close enough to the bench at MSG. Very, very little.

That was a Lavin fashion statement, oops I mentioned the L word..... :)

Me too, but I wouldn't describe it as very very little.

recruiting I think they are more than capable. Not sure which one you could point to as being a proven x'o experienced guru. Slice ? Don't really recall him having a tremendous influence during games

I totally understand what Mullin is saying about Bird and the model Bird used but it's totally different when you have Harter and Carslisle on your bench and that is in no way meant as disrespect to our staff. Those are 2 very experienced nba guys that Bird deferred to

I love that picture. Reminds me when the football team wouldn't let Lucas into the huddle in the movie Lucas

For me the issue is not how or with whom CM decides to develop the X's and O's of the team, nor the settling in issues that were apparent in year one. The issue is that when the staff was constructed there was no one on the bench who had really done it before besides slice at Manhattan and that was a disaster. Chris and Greg may have the potential but it may also take time. Slice and Matt are recruiters, first second and third, maybe coaches fourth. Mitch also has no coaching experience. Chris' loyalty to Greg and Mitch may just slow down the staff development. Gotta be patient I guess. It's one thing to play hard but I want a staff that gets the team to play smart. Let's see how they do with a group of guards more ready to play D1 hoops this year, as that could make a lot, of not all. the difference.

And Slice is in cheap seats. :) Just kidding around for those who take this stuff too seriously.

Whose palm does Mullin and Slice have to grease to be allowed in the huddle?

Was said jokingly but Boomer kept saying that his asst coach Mitch Richmond brought absolutely nothing to the table in helping him coach that charity game. :)

I'd suggest having Mullin having Matt tweet St Jean during the huddle asking him to make some room

Have to disagree with you North. Lovett, Ponds, Yawke, Ellison all played ball in this country. All the staff need to identify recruits and go after them. We need to quit thinking that each coach only recruits a certain kind of kid. Ahmed is a JUCO transfer who was pursued by a lot of schools. The two transfers should help us the following year.
Personally, I am very happy with our present situation. We have at least ten kids in our program who were recruited by other high major programs. As far as coaching, let's be realistic, The Wizard himself could not have won with last year's team. I expect to see improvement since both coaches and players have had time to grow and mature.
