All Time Starting 5

Apparently you don't need your big man to defend or rebound either. ;) Just kidding kind of.

Chris will hopefully continue to improve and could be the best after four years. But right now take away the blocked shots, which are good except when they aren't and give up (or award) easy points, opposition rebounds and team fouls, and Chris isn't even close to Rob Werdann after two years.

Nice job with your starting five. People who didn't see or don't remember just how tough and reliable George Johnson was for us - a scorer who could rebound and defend and play big in big moments. He should be immortalized for simply outplaying all 5 Indiana Hooisers on one of the all-time great college basketball teams, and giving us our greatest garden victory in our history. As it is, even as a loss, for me it's easily one of or top 5 games at the garden.

Almost by reflex, as fans who have seen both, we tend to put Mark Jackson ahead of Reggie Carter as an all time St. John's great, primarily on his very long and outstanding NBA career. To do so, though, is a mistake. Reggie Carter was every bit as good as billed, and when he transferred here with Rencher, we could play with anyone.

Me likes but might have to sub Mark Jackson for Reggie Carter and I loved Reg.

I loved Reggie Carter. He was my first "favorite player" for St. John's when he transferred in. That's right around the time I began following the Redmen. But Mark Jackson had the (then) single-season NCAA assist record his senior year. He was a much better player than he was projected to be coming out of HS. The NBA career is icing on the cake, but he was a great college player.

Like I said, it's easy to forget about Reggie. I do think that he and Rencher formed a poor man Rolls Royce backcourt for us. Rencher on the break was perhaps the most exicting guard we've ever had.

Reggie was a really good man by all accounts, taken way too early by heart disease. He graduated with my wife, so I am guessing it was 1980. I still remember him proudly sitting in the bleachers, graduating on time. If I am not mistaken, he became an assistant principal at Mineola HS? Others here may know better.

I believe Reggie got a law degree from SJU Law. Not sure about his career path. He was an excellent representative for our school. An intelligent and classy man.

On the court he was cut out of the Walt Frazier mode. No demonstrative gestures, no trash talk, no strutting. Coolly effective at all times.

Class of '80 is correct for Reggie. Same year I graduated....People forget, Mark Jackson was a human charging foul his first 2 years at SJU. Fact.

Reggie transferring from Hawaii, and McKoy deciding to come here reunited LI Lutheran teammates - that was as big as Lopez and Zendon coming here. Two super blue chip players (McKoy and Carter). McKoy didn't live up to billing - Carter did.

If I believe correctly Bernard Rencher (from ND) tranferred in with Reggie which gave us a very goood backcourt.

I have heard in the past from someone who was very close to him during his SJU years, that Wayne's high school coach, "the Good Rev." wore him down during his years at Lutheran.

One of McKoy's teammates once told me that McKoy was the laziest basketball player he ever saw, and that Carnesecca let him get away with it. When the team ran stairs in Alumni Hall, McKoy refused. At times he didn't want to practice. When the teammate asked Wayne what h was doing, he replied, "Oh, I'll learn that at the next level (the NBA)"

Any Queens of LI fan will remember that the LI press started writing about McKoy when he was a 6'5" 6th grader. He was presumed to be the next great NYC center. He stopped growing in the 8th grade at 6'8

Why mention or compare Mark's first two years when Reggie only played as an upperclassman at STJ?

Mark Jackson (jr and sr.) > Reggie Carter (jr. and sr.)

I meant almost. We lost to undefeated #1 Indiana to the final minute of the Holiday Festival in 75 or 76. All game, but especially in the opening minutes Johnson singlehandedly outplayed Indiana, putting All American Kent Benson on the bench with 3 quick fouls.

Jackson's NBA career was being used as an example of why he'd be a better choice. If his NBA career can be used, why not all of his college career? Reggie's NBA career was not spectacular but he had one. I also thought about putting Kevin williams there, too, although Looie seemed to like Bobby Kelly better for reasons unknown. Talent wise there was no comparison.

Pat - agree with you again (plus you had a kid at Nova also). Kevin Williams should have been on my roster, because until he stood up to Ewing, our team didn't the onions to compete nose to nose. I still remember the swagger and taunt at midcourt, with a big menacing grin on his face, challenging Ewing to come over and take Kevin on. Ewing declined, smartly so he wouldn't get tossed, but our fans also believed that KW would have wrecked Ewing in a fight. Pearl Washington also stood up to Ewing, and was the only college player I can remember who could take the ball to the hole repeatedly against Georgetown, completely freezing defenders (including Ewing) in the lane and getting off easy shots.

Beast of East-

Perhaps we're too old. Mark Jackson was a fine player at SJU. Really, really good in his last two seasons. But over time folks forget his flaws. Many only really recall him as an SJU guy who was a VERY solid pro. Almost EVERYONE has Berry in his or her top 5 (me too). How was his NBA career? If you want simply SJU stuff and not NBA stuff, I'll take Reggie over Mark Jackson in a minute, and RC wasn't really a point guard although he slipped in that role often.

Kevin Williams??? Well, I think a Cluess might have kept him on the bench. How Louie could have done that??? Let's just say other factors must have been involved. Bobby Kelly dribbling with his head down and heading to the left sidecourt...eyes closed...how many times did we see that........and KW sitting and watching.....................
