All Time Starting 5

No Kevin Loughery on your 60's team?

A likely omission on my part. but, my recollection of Kevin was that he transferred in from BC and, maybe played 2 years in the early 60's? Does that sound right?

I also have the thought that Kevin was a better pro than Collegian and, then did some NBA coaching.
He did play with Tony Jackson and LeRoy Ellis, with Coach Lapchick.

Kevin was also an excellent ABA coach leading the Nets to several championships. Of course having Dr. J didn't hurt.

Helluva backcourt you have there. Not sure there are enough basketballs to go around for your team, though. And you don't have enough size up front.

You forgot Tyrone Grant.

Question for those who saw him. Was Alagia really good. I saw a couple of games on tv back in the 70's but I was not yet a big college ball fan. Reggie Carter was really the first of our point guard that I admired. Around the time that he transferred in, I became a big SJU fan. Unfortunately back then you didn't get that many games on tv and I didn't attend any games until I became a student there (very few even then).

Frank was a crafty, undersized PG with a very competitive nature. He was also well schooled by Coach Frank Morris at St. Agnes of Rockville Centre.

"The best of the little men ever to play at St. John's, Frank Alagia played from 1972-76, and was Frank Mulzoff and Lou Carnesecca's floor leader. He finished his illustrious St. John's career with 478 assists, which was the most in school history until Mark Jackson (738) and Jason Buchanan (665) surpassed that mark. In addition, Alagia was one of only two players to win the Francis Pomeroy Naismith Award as the National Player of the Year for players 6-0 and under. Alagia led four St. John's teams to a combined 83-30 record and successful postseason accomplishments. In 1974-75, the team lost the consolation game of the NIT Final Four to Oregon in overtime, 80-76. In 1975-76, the team made it to the ECAC Championship before losing a thriller to Rutgers, 70-67, and was then ousted by Indiana in the NCAA Tournament."

"Everyone" offered him a scholarship.

You couldn't believe the (virtually) daily publicity he and Beaver Smith received in NEWSDAY when they played at St. Agnes and Southside, respectively.

As good a ballhandler as anyone who ever wore a St. John's uniform.

Hard to believe he is 58 yrs. of age. An all-time great Redmen.

I started SJU in 58 so most of my picks have not been seen by many.
Seiden
Mullin
Tony Jackson
Leroy Ellis
Sealy
The stats of Seiden, Jackson and Ellis are not as impressive as some of the more recent players because freshmen were ineligible and colleges played much fewer games. This group played approx. 75 games.
One telling stat is Jackson averaged over 15 rebounds a game in his first year and Ellis averaged 16 as a senior.

I like your selections. Didnt Ellis get to the NBA? Unfortunately there are a lot of great players who are essentially unknown to the fans of today. Wasnt there a center whose last name started with a Z?? I think he passed away some yrs back. Anyone recall his name??

I would construct my team by choosing players based on their best season. Mullin, Mark Jackson, Billy Schaeffer and Boo Harvey had phenomenal senior seasons. I'm happy with either Boo or Mark at the point. Mullin is the SG, and Schaeffer at small forward. I would play Sonny Dove over Mel Davis at PF, with Sonny's passing ability giving him the edge. Billy Paultz at center works for me. Perhaps the 2 greatest shooters we ever had starting the game, and one of the two best rebounders off the bench. All smart players, and all clutch players. Shooting and smarts. How refreshing.

Ray, glad you concur about Sonny Dove.. Many posters here, likely never saw Sonny play and that's too bad. Freshman could not play Varsity in those days, so Sonny was a sopf in 1965, NIT Champions and Coach Lapchick's last season.

I think Sonny was a ALL AMERICAN, his senior year and like the 4th player chosen in the NBA draft that senior year. Detroit Pistons maybe? He didn't have the long term success in the pros but, was hampered by drug problems and unfortunately lost his life in a Auto Accident on the Gowanus Bridge, driving a taxi.

He was tall, 6'8" but, maybe 195 lbs. He had a nice , well rounded game. Played at St Francis Prep..

He also was the SJU radio announcer at the time of his death. Went to the ABA for a few seasons, and averaged 14 pts for the Nets. He died at just 37 years of age.

Right Sonny Dove was a big name at st johns and was a great player. Dont forget they played more of a control game then and the scores were lower. I think Sonny was a senior when I first started at st johns. He played with the McIntyre brothers. Does anyone remember who defended Cassie Russel at the Garden and essentially shut him down? Wasnt that in the NIT or some other tournatment?

This was the game - ranked 8th greatest moment at the Garden. Ahhh the good old days when we were the Redmen and actually won games we werent suppose to win

# 8. ST. JOHN'S DEFEATS #1 MICHIGAN - JANUARY 2, 1965
Most people thought St. John's didn't have a chance when it faced top-ranked Michigan and Cazzie Russell in the championship game of the annual Holiday Festival. Their thinking looked to be on the money when the Wolverines took a 68-52 lead with 9:35 remaining. No deficit is erased quickly but the Redmen kept chipping away and Kenny McIntyre hit four straight jumpers, the last of which tied the game at 70 with 2:25 to play. St. John's took the lead for good at 74-72 when Jerry Houston drove the baseline with 1:37 left. He added a free throw with 28 seconds remaining that offset a late tip-in by Michigan, the Wolverines' only field goal over the final 10 minutes.

Re that 1965 game vs Mich., was it Ken Wirell who defended Russell? I was in elementary school when I watched the black and white taped broadcast of that game. Later that year, Lapchick's last, we defeated Villanova to win the NIT. Does anyone know where the two schools were ranked at that time? Why weren't they in the NCAA tourney?

Was Mullin a unanimous selection? Or is this like baseball's Hall of Fame? When picking a team, you can go with the best 5 by position, or go with the group you think would have a chance to beat any combination of the remaining players. Then you need a bench of a least 3, since that's all most teams use anyway, and more than Looie used. Do you have a good mix on your top 5? Do you need more than one basketball? How do you match-up against quickness or size and bulk? Do you have any lunch pail guys? If you had to choose a coach post Looie, who do you go with?

I know its been a rough ten years, but If I only had the last 10 years to choose from, Phil Missere would make my squad - as a walk on :)

I was born in 80 so I remember Mullin and Jackson in the NBA very well, but unfortunately not their St John's days.

F- Ron Artest
F - Malik Sealy
F/G - Lavor Postell
C - Zendon Hamilton
G - Erik Barkley
G - Hardy

Yes thats 6 but I had to add Hardy. He was so good here, especially senior year when he was one of the best players in the country.

Can't put Harkless here because he was 1 and done. Postell is the guy I'm sure others won't have up here but the Johnnies won the Big East with him and he was very good. Lopez was just too poor of a shooter despite being a fantastic athlete so I can't put him on my list. Boosty Thorton was also very good but doesn't make my list. Maybe I should have Hatten here, but he was so streaky and at times such a poor shooter.
