All Time Starting 5

Beast of East-

Perhaps we're too old. Mark Jackson was a fine player at SJU. Really, really good in his last two seasons. But over time folks forget his flaws. Many only really recall him as an SJU guy who was a VERY solid pro. Almost EVERYONE has Berry in his or her top 5 (me too). How was his NBA career? If you want simply SJU stuff and not NBA stuff, I'll take Reggie over Mark Jackson in a minute, and RC wasn't really a point guard although he slipped in that role often.

Kevin Williams??? Well, I think a Cluess might have kept him on the bench. How Louie could have done that??? Let's just say other factors must have been involved. Bobby Kelly dribbling with his head down and heading to the left sidecourt...eyes closed...how many times did we see that........and KW sitting and watching.....................

Agree on Jackson. That's why I have him backing up Boo Harvey on my roster. It's essentially a two year vs two year comparison, and I think I would take Boo. Not sure I've ever seen a more clutch player at SJU. Boo didn't have Mullin to pass the ball to, either.

NBA is a different discussion.

Somebody made the point that if you are just looking for one year Collin Charles had one great one, and that's true too.

I preferred Larry Washington over Bobby Kelly. Kelly was a Carnesecca type of PG - no flash, low turnovers, didn't push the ball up, took a couple of shots per game. Washington IMO was a much better player.

Mark Jackson was a much better pro than college player, even if he did pile up assists here. I remember in their final meeting Pearl Washington torched Jackson so completely and with such ease, that I felt sorry for the lead footed Jackson. At that point everyone presumed that Pearl would be a great pro and Jackson a question mark. Turned out the other way.

If I believe correctly Bernard Rencher (from ND) tranferred in with Reggie which gave us a very goood backcourt.

I have heard in the past from someone who was very close to him during his SJU years, that Wayne's high school coach, "the Good Rev." wore him down during his years at Lutheran.

you are correct about Rencher being an ND transfer. You may also remember the incredible move Rencher could pull again and again: On a two on one break, he'd favor the right side, and at the foul line he would FAKE a behind the back pass to a cutting teammate, complete freezing the defender. He'd somehow pull the ball back and go in for an uncontested layup. I haven't seen that before or since.

G- Jackson - tough decision but I am going with stats...we have had a lot of good PGs
G - Mullin
F - Sealy
F - Artest
C - Wennington/Hamilton - i can't decide. Hamilton had better stats but I felt like Bill was better at making the team better. I like passing big men and Bill averaged more than double Hamilton's assists. Tough call.

Bench
Kevin Williams
DJ Kennedy
Tyrone Grant
Felipe Lopez
Marcus Hatten

Walter Berry
Boo Harvey

Future Probable Replacement - Rysheed Jordan - I think he's going to be an incredible player by the time he's done. If he stays 4 years I see him in the starting 5.
Future Possible Back up _ Obekpa - waiting to see how he develops. I can't see him knocking any starting front court players out though.

I was thinking the same, while I love his starting 5- Berry has to be in there ahead of Big Bill or Zman

Never was big on Colin Charles but David Cain sure had a beauty year in '93, I believe.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's who LMF was thinking of. After really doing nothing his first three as a Sr he averaged 11pts, 7 a's, 2.4 steals and 4 rbs. The team only went 19-11 but did win a game in the dance before losing to Arkansas. Kind of overachieving for a team that started Cain and Derek Brown at the guards, Middleton and Lyson at the F's and Shawnelle.

A Wooden Award winner is coming off the bench for you, Buckethead?

Great Point. Take backs - Berry starts and Sealy comes off the bench

I went traditional line up. I would take Walter ahead of either center.

I love "The Truth". My favorite play in SJU history was him swatting Pearl in the BE Championship game. Walter was incredible and I struggled with the choices between him, Ron and Sealy. I put Ron on because he added a three point threat to go with Chris. Sealy and Berry's numbers were similar, with Berry's being slightly higher in his senior year where they were playing with the Iron Man team with the short bench.

Hind sight I should have started Walter though. All I could think about was his abridged NBA career. If you take his short career numbers in the NBA and compare them year by year with Sealy he would have well outscored Sealy if he had also played 8 years. Guess that's what I get for rushing at lunch time.

I grew up in Nassau County, graduated high school a year ahead of Wayne McKoy & a year behind Reggie Carter. Watched them play often in high school, followed their college careers when I was at Temple U & we played against St Johns every year, also in the NCAA tourney. Remember watching Reggie play with Hawaii his freshman year & almost beat St Johns by himself at Alumni Hall. Wayne was written about in Newsday when he was in the seventh grade. He was actually compared to Lew Alcindor, & was expected to become a 7 footer. He did stop growing at 6'8", & that was part of the reason he fizzled out. Always was a center, but finished high school with the height of a forward. He seemed to lack motivation & intensity. I asked a few people what happened to him after college, somebody told me he played in Europe for a few years.

Reggie was really good. His best games at St Johns were against the top teams, when Louie let him take charge. If I remember right, he carried St Johns deep into 2 NCAA tournaments, & one year they barely missed making the Final 4. I thought Reggie would have a long career with the Knicks, but was wrong.

Also remember those St Johns teams had Curtis Redding from Canarsie HS, transferred in from Kansas State. He was mentally out of control.

I'm curious among the older users who saw the Cluess brothers play at St. John's. I know Hank played a little with the ABA Nets, and remember Greg being described as a tough as nails player (maybe a Matt Brust type). Kevin was scorer, the youngest of the three to my knowledge. I think he played in the backcourt with Mel Utley, and that Kevin came close to making the Kansas City Royals in several seasons, as a 13th man on the taxi squad if I'm correct. Any opinions from older fans would be appreciated. For that matter, I do remember Mel Utley was somewhat celebrated, out of Far Rockaway. Can anyone comment on these players?

Bob McIntyre was at MSG last night.

Can anyone recall the McIntyres at SJU and how good they were?

In the old LI Press league (anyone remember that?) Bobby McIntyre would routinely put up sick numbers, like 55-65 points.

Kevin was basically a shooter, loved Mel Utley good all around player I think averaged 17 a game as senior.
