All Realignment Talk Here

Because I know everybody has been wondering about this

"Two weeks ago Tulane University accepted a unanimous invitation by the university presidents to join the BIG EAST in 2014. We remain committed to the BIG EAST and to those members who desire to remain a part of the conference. Tulane's President and Athletics Director are actively involved in planning for the conference's future."

and the maac loses????????????????????

My guess, Marist and Loyola to the Atlantic 10

Right on one, wrong conference

Yes, they arent A10 quality...they will more than likely go to another conference who will lose a team to the A10...possibly a MAAC--CAA--A10--BE domino

Creighton, St. Mary's and San Francisco according to Dave Reynolds of Bradley.

No way.

We agree.

I don't think it would happen but I could see it as a possibility. If you add a west coast team you have to add a travel partner and those two are close enough that you could play a Friday/Sunday with little travel in between, unlike if Gonzaga is involved. If you stop at those three to get to 10, Creighton makes a sense as a West Division foe between the West Coast and Marquette and DePaul.

I'm sure they're taking a hard look at RPI. No real incentive to adding a school like USF to start a new conference.

I think the C7 need to be patient in this process. Don't just add schools for the sake of adding.

That's what got us into this mess (re: Tulane).

I think that's the approach to take.
You can always expand later on. This new conference won't have any compitition for the basketball-only schools.
If a team like Detroit or Richmond are on the edge now... leave them out, go with 10 or 12, and revisit the situation in a year or two.

It was/is supposed to happen today -- Marist and Fairfield to the CAA.

However, I am now hearing that both or either one of those might hold out to see how many the Big East 7 take to either be a choice or get into a bigger league, ie the A-10

Della..what are your thoughts on VCU as a possible target for BE...seems like they are mentioned but at bottom list...they seem like a good program with good coach that can elevate further via BE membership...

I think this is most likely going to happen:

@SIPeteThamel: If New East ends up at 12, it would likely be X, Butler, Dayton, SLU and Creighton. (Temple, GMU, VCU will be considered).

I say go after VCU and George Mason and tell Temple to take a hike.

I want this conference to have Zero to do with football. Temple would be free to join if they show in writing that they plan on dissolving their football program. The same would go for any other school.

I personally would take Temple irrespective of their decision re: football...their FB program will never gain them consideration for a top conference so chance of leaving BE is low...

Doug Gottlieb just crapped all over St. Johns at halftime of the Butler-Indiana game. said no way they can fill Garden playing Butler, but can playing Cuse. Well Cuse is leaving so how about playing SMU?
Filling 19K seats is difficult -- period. If we can get to the point where we can bank on filling lower tier (~10-12K) for average games (and SRO for the big ones) we will be just fine...just too bad they can't pull the curtain down over top tier...

also, suspect we will play a number of these teams, including Butler, a Carnesecca..so Gotlieb doesn't totally understand the role of MSG

Gottlieb is a blowhard who no one takes seriously.

Of course MSG wouldn't sell out with that matchup and many other new BE match ups because there is no history.

But I bet you the BE tourney would be one of the most watched conference tourneys out there rathe than a top heavy ACC tourney.

If Butler is a ranked team coming to the Garden, fans will show up and his network will be begging to air it.
If Lavin continues to right the ship and we and Butler are both top 20 teams, that will draw. The new conference should help Butler and new rivalries will develop.

Exactly. I agree 100%
This clown Gottlieb and some of the other bozos are upset that the 7 finally stood up and did something to protect our interests. It was OK for the other BE schools to bolt. I guess he thinks it will work out for them. I am not so sure but good luck to them.
I am a SJU alum (85 grad) and long time season ticket holder. We had to do this!
No way would I want to see some of the new BE schools play us. I did not care to see them.
The 7 form a solid foundation and if we play it right we will have a helluva BB conference.
Today is a good day for our future.

Pardon my ignorance...when the need for a travel partner is referenced, does that mean that the teams actually travel together to save $?

Gottleib is a moron

St. John's will play Syracuse once annually (MSG or Carrier Dome), with the hope of keeping Gottlieb happy.

I would assume that G'Town is working on the same deal with the Orange.

Just as they did in the BE...Many teams were nothing before the BE (e.g. UCONN, Pitt etc)...the most prominent rivalries that pre-date BE were SJ-Providence, SJ-Syracuse...most others developed as a result of and under the umbrella of the BE

I hope we are out of the BE by next year, just my opinion.
The 7 plus 5 need to get rolling ASAP
I am so pumped with this!

According to ESPN and BE spokesperson, schools will leave June 30, 2015. They would avoid exit fees by doing this.http://www.torchonline.com/sports/2012/12/15/presidents-announce-departure-from-conference/
Now just sit back and collect the exit fees of each FB school that leaves in the next 2 1/2 years.

As much as we want it all to happen now and put this all behind us, it might make most sense to wait it out. I presume setting up TV network deals doesn't happen overnight. It might be prudent to take our time setting this all up and maximize our revenue opportunities.

I am not sure anyone knows for certain when the New Big East will begin play.

My understanding however is that the new alignment for St.John's will start the year after next being the 2014- 2015 season.

Given the exodus of the football schools and the anticipated backing out by some yet to arrive football schools the Big East may be quite a bit smaller come next season.

From a very reliable G'Town poster, makes sense.

Although the announcement came today as mentioned earlier, I am told the format is now very much up for debate. Their our 3 groups of thought among the 7: 1. Keep it at 10 - Makes scheduling easier. 18 conference games, play everyone twice. Make it more "elite". Leaves room for additional adds if warranted in future. 2. Make it 12 - Adds more depth and overall quality, expand to more midwest markets. 3. Expand to 14 - Make it a more national conference.

I'd have no problem with them being asked to join. They are definitely among my top 10. It just depends on what the 7 want to do in regards to numbers of teams — 10? 12? 14? 16? — and is anything on the West Coast a possibility.

There is no doubt that my top three choices to get are Butler, Xavier and St. Louis (It would be St. Joe's instead but I know Nova won't go for that). After that for non West Coast, I'm fine with Creighton, Wichita State, VCU, George Mason, UMass and Dayton.

Travel partners are schools located near one another which make travel easy / cheaper for a school located far away. More important for the non revenue sports. Ex: Depaul may play PC / UCONN back to back on the road. Fly into one, but to the other, fly out from there. South Florida SJU / SH / Rutgers or any combination of that.
