All Realignment Talk Here

How is the price not nearly impossible by now to leave the Big East after what happened? There should be some kind of contract where teams can't leave anymore for the next 25 years. Lock them in. This is ridiculous. People won't even know who is in which conference anymore. But if they want to leave, then bye bye. Rutgers is terrible.

Pretty much re-echo's the espn report

You know that Louisville and Cincy are looking to bolt in a heart beat.

What a mess !!!!!

If all true, time to go to an all basketball conf.

St. John's, Nova, G'town, Providence, Marquette, DePaul, Seton Hall

Add Dayton, Xavier, St. Louis, Creighton and one more for an even dozen.

At least there is somewhat of a common thread as most are similar sized private schools generally located in urban areas.

Something similar in nature to Gonzaga, St. Mary's, USF, Santa Clara, Loyola Marymount, Portland, SanDiego, (which are all West Coast Catholic schools) and Pepperdine.

That said, if this unfolds (a Vatican Conference of sorts), it will not command the TV $$ of an ACC, SEC or Big 10, and be seen as a second tier conference, which is painfully obvious.

Big time football rules the roost.

R.I.P. Big East !

Still hard to believe the basketball only schools in the Big East have not been pre-emptive and left the conference. This is just a joke now.

The obvious worry; uconn to acc, louisville then to big X12.. then who knows what else will happen after that. I wonder if it'll happen in a big rush.

The Big Ten might as well lose its not-for-profit status with they way they are going to try and mint money with their new ultra conference.

It's an interesting move for Marlyand. They are present-valuing the estimate of incremental dollars they will receive in the new huge Big Ten contract going forward vs. the upfront cost of the $50mm exit fee and concluding it it's worth it to move.

Rutgers got very very lucky that the Big Ten is making this move. They easily could have been left for dead in college football - and now they have a huge new recruiting tool. Very lucky for them

Why doesn't the Big East have teams sign a contract for at least a decade if not 25 years to bring some god damn stability? Teams can join, but not leave for a while unless they want to pay an absurdly high $100 mil. Why can't that happen?

By the way, I just did some quick math:

Assuming an interest rate,
If Maryland were to receive, say $5mm more a year in the Big Ten over what they would receive from the ACC, the pay-back to break-even vs. the $50mm outlay is almost 16 years.

If they receive and incremental $8mm a year in revenue, the break-even point is 8 years from now. That's nothing. If it ensures your continued athletic success (i.e. football and basketball staying relevant and generating enough revenue dollars to pay for all the other sports), then 8 years is nothing. Eight years would be over seemingly in a blink of an eye.

Because they can't get enough schools to sign off on that. They would if they could but they can't. Rutgers, Louisville and UCONN would never agree to it because they know the opportunity to leave for greener pastures might come at any moment - and it has!

I don't care about Rutgers. I care about the implications from them leaving for other teams. There needs to be a complete re-do on conferences. Set it up like a draft. The conferences pick a certain number of teams, and then the conferences lock for 10 yrs. The constant shuffling is terrible for the NCAA and destroys rivalry, tradition, and name brand.

I totally agree w your last sentence. Its also forcing conferences to be georaphical messes.IE Mayland in the heart of ACC territory going to the the big 10, Rutgers being in the geographic heart of the BE going to the Big 10. The BE is such a geographic mess now, fighting for survival ,have SDSU,Boise state and the Texas schools.

Unfortunately none of that last sentence really matters. It's all about the dollars.

To state the obvious this is all about $$$$$. No news bulletin there.

How is that for a mastery of the understatement !!!!!!!!

None of these schools care about long standing rivalries.

It's not destroying the brand of those schools that have bolted to the ACC or those who potentially will bolt to the ACC and The Big 10.

It does hurt the schools left holding the bag, as was pointed out.

Without a marketable football program, a school has zero leverage.

The ACC, Big 10 and every other major conference only cares about their own self interest.

They could care less about the impact their moves have on anyone else.

It's every man for himself !

We should start a football team!

We could play in a ready made field - no land purchase necessary. Just play in Central Park!
All you gotta do is rip out the Sheep's Meadow; install a few bleachers - and billion dollar stadium
And it'd be great.... every conference would make a beaten path to our door!

St. John's, come play for the Pac 10! Think of the trans-continental opportunities!

All that you need to do is look south....to the state of Texas. In that state, kids grow up loving either the Horns or the Aggies. It's more than a rivalry, it's a true religious experience.

When A&M was willing to walk away from this rivalry....and head to the SEC, it put everything in perspective. It is now, and will always be...all about the $$$$$'s.

All that you need to do is look south to the Republic of Texas. Kids and households are divided by one thing....a love of the Horns or the Aggies.
When A&M decided to bolt for the SEC and said tradition be damned, it told you everything necessary about tradition and rivalries. It's all about the $$$$'s.
