Zach B making sense

Through two games, my biggest takeaway on St. John's is how much harder they are playing then they have last 2 years. Effort is night and day. #sjubb

There are obvious shortcomings -- depth and size -- but defending and giving max effort are two big steps this program needed to take. So far, they are doing that. #sjubb

I thought the SJU was flat in the 1st half and with little effort to get any boards. In the Nebraska game rebounding was a team effort and I didn't see that today. It's hard to give a good team a 16 point lead and expect to win. If i remember correctly this was an issue in some games last year.
Otherwise i thought there were a lot of positives, but team rebounding is needed.

Shamorie Ponds said Missouri zone "smacked us in the face. We weren't expecting that." First time Tigers have played zone this year. #sjubb

Adjusting on the fly is not in our coaching DNA as yet. Also, gambling on defense like Lovett and Bashir did killed us. Could have easily won this game had Clark and and couple of others played a more cerebral game. The comeback was terrific though.

I feel like Charlie Brown when Lucy pulls the ball away. Down 16 up 8 then lose. Good effort (and there always seems to be one), BUT...
1- We need to not fall behind so much in each game;
2- We need to better defend the 3;
3- Please if the shot is not there don't just flip anything up at the basket, (yea I'm looking at you Bashir, and Marcus and others)
4- The lack of inside players will kill us and this was not or could not be addressed during the offseason; (take whichever you believe but it is and will be a fatal flaw;
5- Please stop fouling off the ball;

Ok, we need to remember we have another game Sunday. Missed opportunity but let's make sure we come ready and leave at 6-1. WE ARE...

Falling behind or playing 'flat' early in games has been our MO this year. That came back to bite us today and will again against good teams. Got to have better shot selection too: 10 more shots than Mizzou, 8 fewer points. Got to play smarter. But I'm impressed with the talent and the grit of this team so far.
Let's win Sunday.

Listened to the game on 970 radio on the way home from PA. What a crumby station. Hard to believe we can't get a better deal on a stronger station. BTW, Minko is terrible. We never adjusted to the refs. We had 3 or 4 quick fouls on the perimeter in a 60 second phase. And finding shooters continue to be a shortcoming.

fair analysis although this lack of depth is going to piss me off all season

Not unless Clark picks up his game and it doesn't look like he will Perhaps yakwe should start and clark coming off the bench since he might givr us more mins since he collects fouls early

Dude, are you being serious?

WVA clubbed UCF today, 85 - 43. Holy moly. The Knights will be either dead men walking or out for blood.

went to the game. imvho the turning point of the game was when the sju player rolled over the tiger. the tiger fans loudly booed on every one of the many replays of that play. perhaps the refs thought that the game was turning ugly & in a flash called sju for 3 quick nickel/dimer fouls. that took the aggressive, successful defense out of sju's arsenal. our short bench could not be called upon to continue the great defense. this teams defense minus the corner 3's is night & day over the last 2 seasons.

I also thought that the game changed when the refs started calling those ticky tack fouls. It took away our defensive intensity which had turned the game in our favor. Without depth on our roster, foul trouble will continue to be an issue for us.

It's not who starts but who finishes. That said, I suggest coach Mullin find some old film of Ty Grant and have Marvin study them intently. Early in the season he is catching whatever Bashir suffers from in the decision making aspects of the game. Both are older players that have been getting emotionally rattled after 1 or 2 bad plays. Neither have been playing solid perimeter defense but both are better offensive options than Yakwe. If anyone starts in place of Clark it will be Owens but he tends to foul at the same pace. Hopefully next year Mullin uses Keita as a 5 and alternates Clark at the 3 and 4. Right now we have Ponds and Lovett bailing out our front line. I doubt we will have either next year so a rapid development of the front court is a priority. .......or, just recruit a solid starter.;)

Great insight. After that play, Lovett was very tentative and backed away from his man repeatedly.

Really up & down performance. Coming back down by 16 was impressive. Second half took control of the tempo. Then the whistles started to blow and Missouri switched to a zone.

Mullin made the adjustments on the zone. He had yakwe & BA flash the elbows but Guards didn’t execute well. Really slowed us down hoisted up some poor shots. Missouri caught fire from 3. They hit 4 in a row 2 were tightly contested (bank shot/around a screen). Definitely need a lot of work on perimeter D. Let’s face it it’s gonna happen due Guards having to cheat and help on the boards. We could of won this game. But it is what is.

This team competes on both ends of the floor. We are light years ahead from where we were last year this time. It’s only November.

Ponds quitting school after this year? Love him as a college player but 6'1 guards at the NBA level have too be extra special players and he may get there in another year or two.
