Believe it when I see it.
There are some interesting reasons why it didn't happen that way this time, but I can't publicly discuss.
What a tease!
Maybe you can't but I can!
President Conrado “Bobby” Gempesaw, Ph.D., Agricultural Economics, has narrowed his choices to two surprise candidates. Neither have any sports administration experience but he feels they are starting with nothing and wants someone who can think outside the box.
The top candidate is Manuel Victorino Pangilinan who hails from Manila. He really likes sports and feels he can really understand what Conrad is saying.
The other candidate is Horatio Purl mutter who hails from Ocala Florida. His experience is in developing Olympic swimmers. He feels he can turn around the swimming team and promises to build an Olympic sized swimming pool on the site of the current tennis courts.
No sports will actually report to the new A.D. as Conrado wants to role strictly to be ceremonial. He will mostly attend the way too many as it is St. John's golf outings and pick up Mitch Richmond at the airport when he is in town.
While I know you are being sarcastic you could have at least picked a sport St. John’s currently has instead of swimming which was disbanded in 2003 and the school weight and athletic center sits on top of what was the pool.

Grempshaw did pick a professional AD the last time and while it didn’t work out, I would be surprised if he doesn’t this time.
Not going to happen. Other big donors here can say better than me with their convos with Bobby G but we will not be hiring a big time AD and we aren't paying for one. I can be proven wrong but time will tell and that's what I'm told

ironically Goff would have eventually been good but his demise should make us all want to drink more to forget about SJU. No pun intended
I am not saying we will hire a big time AD, but what I mean by professional is one who has past experience running an Athletic Department similar in size of what we have at St. John’s and not a puppet.
An anonymous source tells me St. John's would love to hire a female AD. They actively going after all the women that have not applied.

but I dont think your wish is going to happen either

Big time AD's of similar schools dont want the job. The word is out. 72 or JSJ or Panther would know better than me but what I'm told is our best chance is an AD from a smaller conference

But once the AD is hired one of our 114 friends will have the craziest story to tell about someone who applied for the job ( heck he might get it ) who knows but I guarantee it's the craziest ad search story you will have ever heard

RE.the AD discussion. Anything I wrote is in jest. Please see my new signature line.

List seems like it would be pretty small. No AD from a school with football will leave there to come here. I'm not even sure an assistant AD would leave a football school to come here. And no basketball-only AD will leave a school to come to one where he or she would be forbidden to fire the basketball coach. It's going to be a D-II or D-III puppet. Low major, if we're lucky.

Sorry to inform you 85 that you are wrong. The new AD will indeed be a puppet as SJU is down to two candidates-Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd.

The concern over whether Mullin reports to the AD or not , have been posted by previous members . Like Beast said, “ at many , many Schools , the high profile Coach in basketball or football might not be in a Reporting relationship with the AD . It’s just the way things are . And , in many high profile schools the Head Coach might even be more important than the College President . It’s true . It’s usually not something that is flaunted around but, it is the case more often than not .
Being considered a "High Profile" coach is something that is earned after establishing yourself on the sidelines. This is very different from being a Big Name coach who has yet to prove himself as a winner. Jay Wright is currently a high profile coach, but it to some years for him to reach that status. His first few years were were rocky and then he landed that 2002 Class of Foye, Ray, Sumpter, and Fraser which accelerated hish progress. Now, he is on his way to the Hall of Fame.
I don't know how this reporting structure came about but it could simply be that at about the time of his hire the AD position became vacant. It's just as likely that perhaps the reporting structure came from oliva and not from the coach himself.

Regarding AD search, heard President Bobby impressed with New Jersey native, Rupert Pupkin. He has no experience in college sports, but he makes President Bobby laugh, and will work for room and board.
Hopefully they hire someone who understands that we need a new on campus arena. Just look at DePaul, they are already reaping the benefits (assuming they can keep the 4 star kid commited). Running out of excuses when it comes to the new arena topic. DePaul is a very similar school in a big city and they got it done, why not us?
Just to clarify, WIntrust arena is; 1) about 7 miles from DePaul campus and not an on campus arena, and 2) was built using public funds as an events center to expand the capabilities of McCormick Place Convention Center, the largest in America. The "building it for a DePaul" story is quaint and was leveraged to make sure it got built.

Wintrust first year was a bust.

Barely got 3k/game for Depaul and says school has $82.5M skin in game, other half was public funding.

Part of AD role to build corporate relationships. I believe Goff tried to do that to see if Corp sponsors could help support new arena. Didn't seem too successful based on his later comments on small changes to CA and home court advantage.

I guess it depends on how you measure success. If the KPI was convincing folks to go to DePaul games then there was no chance for success. ;) If getting a 1/2 price arena that also serves as a revenue generating facility (WNBA games, boxing, concerts. private events booked by McCormick Sales staff) was the KPI I would imagine the jury is still out.

Will we like it?
Knowing this board, probably not. :)

This is interesting. As much as I dislike Duke, they are a program that most schools would want to emulate. Even their football team has been pretty good in recent years (just got into the Top 25 for the first time in forever).

@JonRothstein

Sources: Duke's Mike Cragg has emerged as the leading candidate for the AD vacancy at St. John's. Cragg is currently Blue Devils' Deputy AD and has been with program since 1987. #SJUBB

Strong candidate....almost seems questionable why he'd want to leave.

won't be easy....Must really love a good challenge or we are overpaying.

St John's and overpaying generally don't belong in the same sentence
