A Shot at Mullin

i agree with Knight. I do not think there is a Coach, living or dead, that could have gotten more results with this crop of Players. And, no disrespect to the Players, who have played hard despite been outgunned from Day 1 .

The results were somewhat predictable, after the first Exhibition game with STAC . A rout from a Division 2 team.Save Mullin and Miitch Richmond appearing in uniform, the team had glaring Personnel weaknesses.
Sure, the Win vs Syracuse was great! A terrific Game Plan and faultless execution against the Zone , resulted in a W.
Blind Squirrels do find Acorns.
But, it was Mike Hopkins Coaching the Orange , not Jim Boeheim.

Yakwe and Sima have Potential but, have fundamental flaws from lack of experience. They are also Rail Thin for Big Men in the BE . Mussini is Small. And, has good Skills but, has worn down as the Season Progressed.

The 5th Year Players , Johnson and Ron M,, are Role Players and likely would be on the Bench for nearly , every other BE team. They have given good effort though and, deserve respect for coming here. Ellison has improved nicely from the start and, is a good Athlete. He has areas to improve, like finishing and improving his Jumper.

Amar and Jones, have had some nice games but, again, are Reserves thrust into significant play. Balamou is Athletic and also had some nice Games but, is undersized to go to the Rim as much as he does. And, he often takes ill advised shots.

Sure, all the losing has sapped Morale and, the Team has nothing left in the Tank and will barely make the Finish Line. If you look at the bottom dwellers in the ACC, SEC, and, other Conferences, they have struggled to win a game or 2 as well.

Here is a Question, does anyone think Calipari or, Pitino or,Coach K would have gotten more out of this Team, than Mullin, Slice, etc?

The Answer is No!

A more experienced, and successful, coach probably would have coaxed 2-4 more wins out of this group. It really wouldn't have changed anything though, because there would still would not have been a postseason birth, and recruiting has not been affected negatively (which was my biggest fear going in).

Of course, a more experience/more accomplished coach probably does not take this job, under these circumstances.

It's fair to say that no coaching staff would have possibly made a huge impact like turning this team to an NIT team but come on you just mentioned a couple of the best college basketball coaches in history that would run circles around us with the same roster head to head.

And that's not meant to disrespect Mullin but come on pick some different coaches if you want to make a reasonable argument

This is all very arbitrary of course but I don't see anyone getting this team 3 or 4 more wins. 1 or 2 yes but with this talent no one was turning this team into a 5 win BE team. Even if you believe Mullin to be the worst coach of all time, 3 -4 more wins is not feasible.

We have had bad luck w injuries also. I don't think we ever saw a heathy Williams and I think Sima is not 100%

It would have to have been the elitest of the elite coaches to get to that total, hence why that number was on the high end. Or, a genius up-and-comer, who'd be out of here in a couple of years anyway.

My post was not clear.

The results were somewhat predictable, after the first Exhibition game with STAC . A rout from a Division 2 team.

By no means, should this team have beaten us by 32 points. However, as an aside, they are having a great season, currently sporting the longest active winning streak in all of Division 2.

http://www.stacathletics.com/sports/mbkb/2015-16/releases/mbkb-wbkb_ECCs_2-28-16

With Wheeling Jesuit's recent loss, STAC now owns the longest active winning streak in Division II in the nation, having reeled off 18 straight since their last loss, on December 19, 2015. Their 24-4 record - 18-2 in conference play - has them ranked #7 in the East in the most recent NCAA Poll, putting a berth in this season's national tournament well within reach.

And they have a point guard from Molloy who might have started some games for us.

Wow, ranked #7 in D2 in the whole as in all of the East. Wow! ;) :)

Disagree MJM...respectfully...in this highly speculative exchange - I do not believe ANY one could've produced more. And for arguments sake if you think, say Coach K would have a few more Ws with these same players, do you think he could've even assembled the team roster we have at the 11th hour?
I don't think so...maybe as good as Chris with Ws and recruiting but not better.
Do you think Coach K or Caliperi/Pitino et al. could have motivated this roster to play with more heart? Again I don't think so.
Subjective I know.
One thing we might agree on - SJU's future is very bright! We the faithful who have endured this year and years under Roberts & Jarvis - will be watching many selection Sundays debating what seed we will have earned!!!
All the best.

We have had bad luck w injuries also. I don't think we ever saw a heathy Williams and I think Sima is not 100%

And RS you are not depicting " excuses" but realities! Why we hit the PERFECT STORM (Red of course :) ) FOR LOSING - what Chris Mullin & staff had to endure, work with, settle for...
CM, his staff, we fans ARE WINNERS not whiners - and this won't happen again. It may take a year, two, three but SJU will have star players and be on the better side of final scores! Mark it down. Take it to the bank ( just not a mortgage bank :) )!!!

all the best

wow seems like forever since i even checked in on this board. still see alota familar names.
re: mullin shame on anyone who tries to crap on his name at this point ...it's his 1st yr & i really have faith in my man Slice to get those big fish in due time...all it takes is getting that first one, then the rest will follow. he's already off to a good start w/ the kids coming in fall '16. hang in there fellas, we're gonna be ok.

Welcome back, Deacon. Good to see you posting again...

Watching Redmen Report it is easy to see that Mullin has a firm grasp on the individual players strengths, weaknesses and the work that needs to be done.

He also is extremely transparent on the team's performance. Calls it like it is regardless of what the stat sheet says.

Admittedly, it has been odd (not necessarily wrong) to see him delegate certain responsibilities to his assistants. Although strange to see, it is something that we wanted Lavin to do. Whitesell was brought in, presumably as a #2, and seemed to be an afterthought for in-game strategy.

Watching today's Redmen Report it appears as though Mullin probably discussed the roles when he recruited the staff. Keep in mind each of the assistants had a very good job when he came calling.

All in all, he knows the game, is learning on the job and is very likable and trustworthy (traits that should not be underestimated).

Wow Boo I lost ALL credibility for posting a thought... I guess you didn't notice my comment that it's a "highly speculative" topic here...so the invincible Coach K - from my alma mater and who I respect dearly - would have had a better 11th hour recruiting class...to use your final word " Seriously?"
What he would've had a extra *** star recruit or two, an extra win or two...
We can disagree, too bad all my credibility is gone forever, I still admire your posts and, let's see, your credibility
great we can now enjoy the off season, no fun losing, even for optimistic fans.

Hang in there SS&G, you lose no credibility at all, facts are Coach K went 13-29 his 1st three years in the ACC while inheriting a team good enough to go to the NIT his 1st year at Duke. He has said several times that was he hired in this modern era and had that ACC record and his overall of 38-47 he would never have gotten a 4th year. Your comment was right on the money.
