A Shot at Mullin

No coach was doing anything with this roster. Any judgement at this time is premature and baseless.

PERIOD.

Article aside for a second, regardless of what a great job the staff did cleaning up the mess that was left behind, and how little was expected of this team this year, I do think its fair to critique the staff on things like; use of TOs, offense sets, defense strategies, plays called coming out of TOs, substitution patterns, lineup at any given time, etc. I am not talking about questioning the W-L record or whether, at this point, Chris is the right guy for the job. But IMO he and the staff is fair game for most other things, especially this late in the season.

Any poster has a right to opinion and comments. However the offensive sets, defensive strategies etc with the talent on the team at this point these things are not performed at big east level and players are in the learning process so making adjustments in details when the plan goes wrong is not happening
All that aside I like what I see in players staff and coach .There will be a time when the results will matter

Looking over his banter with people on Twitter it's safe to say this guy is a tool.

I expected this year to be bad, not historically bad.

The recruiting class is very good so there's hope for incremental success.

Still, a lot of disconcerting moments through the first year of the Mullin regime especially in terms of effort on the court and leadership on the bench.

A reasoned analysis of our season, imo.

I think before anything else I would like to see Mullin more engaged. Once he does that I think you can then start to judge what kind of coach he will be.

I'll bet the staff is being critical of themselves. They all come from successful situations before forming the new regime at SJU. The big picture vibe feels mission-like...I like that a lot, and we have (on paper) an impressive recruiting class in motion. But weve all witnessed in-game shortcomings and an apparent lack of leadership at times from the bench. It's a bit more than I expected. More talent (players) and one year under the belt (staff) might do a world of good...I remain very optimistic.

JIm Calhoun 9-19 his first year......
Coach K was 22-34 years 2&3 of his current tenure .....
Billy Donovan was 27-42 his first two years at Florida.

Now I'm not comparing Mullin by NO means to these coaches. All had tons of coaching experience.

But it tells me Building a PROGRAM
takes time. Yes there is plenty to
criticize the staff (in game). This season has been frustrating.
But I'll put my $ that the staff builds a solid consistent winning Basketball program.

First things first. I thought things would be bad and I thought we would win about 12 games. So the record has been worse but that is not really a concern. But let 's be honest there has been some things that have been worrisome. Even though it was his first coaching job, I thought that Mullin would carry himself like he he had been coaching all his life. Simply because he is Chris Mullin. But maybe that was an unfair assumption. Maybe letting his assistant draw plays, sitting on court-side tables and the such is part of the learning curve? None of the previous things are that damning but put together they failed the eye test. At least for me. I figured style of play, substitutions, rotations would take awhile but I figured the other stuff Mullin would have down. But maybe that is all a part of the process too though.

Bottom line is I really hope it works out because with this coach I am doubly invested. Lifelong fan of program because of the guy coaching the team. For me it has to work out because if it doesn't.....Well maybe the next hire will be Walter Berry and I would be all in again anyway.

Most of the posters on here are astute enough to factor in the limited talent and youth when critiquing a game or game situation. In the SH game, Malik getting trapped along the baseline was no doubt a result of his lack of experience. However that play contributed to the loss and as fans we are going to discuss why he was even put in that position in the first place. Just an example. I like what I see from the players and staff as well. Like Paultz and others, I would have preferred that Chris had brought in a George Blaney type as an assistant. Although I like St. Jean a lot and think he may very well turn out to be the tactician that we need. Time will tell.

Why wouldn't it be historically bad? We lost 96% of our scoring and replaced it with a roster containing not one player who would be starting on another Big East team. We had no point guard. And we had a coach who had never coached a game in his life.

What was historically worse--the year when all our talent was drafted to fight in WW II?

Okay I'll bite. Why is this post funny it seems pretty on point to me?

I would guess that MJ's main point was that coaching does in fact matter.

Coaching does actually matter. I feel good in saying we'll be better offensively due to having better guards and overall playmakers. Hopefully, better guard play will result into better shots and looks. My concerns lie on the defensive side of the ball. I hope to see much better improvement and detail, defensively.

Per the gif used, it wasn't laughter towards what was said. LOL

@Joshua_Newman: Top-3 recruit, potential future pro, but what of that momo who said St. John's made a mistake hiring Mullin?

@NYPost_Brazille: Another #sjubb visitor Saturday: Harlem's Mohamed Bamba, consensus top 3 junior in country.

All this doom and gloom is due to the fact that few among the fan base realized the limit of talent this team has. Relax, Talented Replacements are on the way! Nearly all the blame for this season belongs to Lavin. He left the Cupboard bare. Mullin gets a pass on this completely. and, forget the sitting on the scorers table. it means nothing, except to those who think it means something..

I believe there is great empathy and sympathy among the BE Coaching Fraternity for Chris.. Nearly all have commented publicly or anonymously about this Year's team's lack of Ammunition. Lavin wasn't nearly as respected. And, deserved every bit of criticism he earned in his time here. Leaving the Program , worse than it was under Norm, is inexcusable.. I hope he never Coaches again. He's a carnival barker, limited ability as a Coach.

Most fans are giving Mullin a pass this year, myself included, But, next year is a different story.
