a lot of endlessly repetitive chatter

Bright side is Mitch should be extremely well rested from his 5+ month vacation.

That's the shame...he's getting paid.

Remember, this was going to be the hardest working staff in college basketball!

Giving them the benefit of the doubt they may have claimed to be the hardly working staff.

Not pulling the trigger on Rice is stubbornness.

Sticking with Mitch is shameful.

Ultimately, I just don't get Mullin's approach to this job.

It just seems everything the coaches do defies logic. The only coaches that appear to truly be committed and pretty good at what they do are Matt and GSJ. Wonder how Matt’s taking this. Maybe Mullin promised to help a lot more recruiting? It’s like letting an idiot handle your investments and he keeps losing you tons of money but he insists he knows what he’s doing. This is why we need someone with power to overrule Mullin or ask him to leave after this season if he’s going to let his stubbornness drive us right into an avoidable iceberg. Why let him hold us hostage?
How is St John's ever going to be an elite program if Mullin is so stubborn.
The reason why ST. John's isn't an elite program goes way beyond Mullin. Do you think bringing Rice here would suddenly change that?

Is there any factual information stating the reason Mike Rice didn't/isn't coming here is because Mullin didn't want that? I want a solid staff just as much as the next person, however who has verifiable information this is all because Mullin is stubborn?

I'm flummoxed. Could Mitch have promised CM, he'd re-energize and recruit?
Could Mullin have pledged to Matt A, that he would become more involved in recruiting?
Those are likely foolish assumptions to hold.
We shall see, but I doubt this augurs well for recruiting for 2019.

They will continue to strike out with the high major high school recruits. That is why mike rice was important.

Winning and sending players to the NBA bring in high major recruits. Not Mike Rice

How many 5 stars did Mike Rice bring to Rutgers, or any of the other 8 schools he worked at? Meanwhile, St. John's will be starting 2 five stars, 2 4 stars and a 3 star, with at least one 4 star on the bench. They are just taking a circuitous way of recruiting them.:)

That is true, but a fully-functioning Staff 100% engaged in recruiting would not hurt.
See DePaul.

That's fine, but we could be a one-year wonder without improved recruiting, hence the importance of a guy who'd be willing to do the job. Plus the AAU connection couldn't hurt, right? This was supposed to be a huge recruiting year for us, and we may strike out again with top high schoolers.

How sad is it that we are essentially groveling for a second assistant willing to do the job.

I'm speaking in general. I don't think Mike Rice is any type of savior for this or any program. I'm on record as wanting Rice on staff. I want Richmond either gone or special assistant. I want another assistant coach who is able to do the job required of them. However making it seem like the program is doomed now without Rice is a bit much.
Now... I'm probably going to get a lot of shit for this, but whatever. My thought on what is best for the program, is after this year (hopefully a very successful one) is that CM passes on the baton to Greg St Jean. With Matt as his top assistant and bring in a couple of veteran assistant coaches. GSJ in my opinion has a great basketball mind and gets along very well with the players. He's basically had 2 years of head coach experience now anyway. I love Mullin. However I love St. John's more. I don't think Chris has the drive for what's required of this job. Which is ok with me. I appreciate him and what he's done as player and coach. However, I will support and wish nothing but success for Chris if he stays for years to come. I supported Lavin until the end as well. I just want the PROGRAM to be successful no matter my personal feelings for the coach. Anyway, that's my nutty thinking

While I'm excited for the season, it's hard to be supportive of the leadership.

Richmond salary over the summer could have paid a bunch of academic scholarships.
"Mullin isn’t planning to hire anyone to fill Richmond’s old advisor position. He also didn’t feel he needed to add an experienced Xs-and-Os coach."

So why is this thread so long?
