a lot of endlessly repetitive chatter

In the 5 years since Rice got fired and no one hired him 320 schools have managed to make the tourney w/o him.
I get it is summer but some of you need to come down off the ledge. Better way to spend the down time would be to maybe find out who is in charge of eligibility cases for the NCAA and maybe kidnap their dog or something. Leverage that for Heron's eligibility. Mike Zaun should head that project up. Any volunteers should reach out to him.
How many have made it with one junior assistant coach doing 100% of the program's recruiting?
No idea.
But here is thing. We have to come to the crossroads. With Heron need to be top 25 team no lower than a 5 seed in tourney and maybe win a game.
W/o Heron need to be a bubble team.
If neither of those scenarios play out Mullin should and probably will be gone. And I am a Mullin guy. So for me who the assistants are or aren't is pretty low on my angst level for the program.
That's fair. But in second scenario where we're on the bubble, how do you take the next step after that? Have to keep growing and this would have been one way to do that. This current model is not sustainable. It's just way too competitive out there. By the way, I'd put the likelihood of our successfully navigating the waiver process and getting Heron into uniform next year at about 5%. They are very hard to obtain - is there anything that would suggest that this program, which seems to trip over itself on a near daily basis, will obtain one? Seems extraordinarily unlikely to me.

Regarding Mitch, all the barbs, including mine occasionally, are understandable as he seemed to vanish since last season and did not go to events this summer as he has in past. That said, the silence is so deafening that it would be unfair to preclude legitimate reasons be it a health or personal matter. Just trying to be fair.
Paultz just to be fair did you know the whereabouts of every other assistant in summers past? Not sure what any assistant besides Matt does. And I only know that because I am pretty sure some on here are on his payroll and keep telling me what he does. Is Richmond a good assistant coach? No idea. But seems fans here are way to preoccupied with our assistant coaches. Never remember this being such an issue before. I think people are looking at this issue as some kind of cure all. We went to Elite 8 with Deuce as an assistant!
Maybe it is me?
I agree on cure all comment & am certainly not in that camp. I do however see a potential value in bringing him aboard. I respect your point re us beating this to death, but hey it is a message board. Re: Mitch, he certainly never was knee deep in recruiting like MA, but in fairness was part of team out there in summer in the past. Luca being out in place of Mitch and even Matic was very odd imo, but certainly not the end of the world .

Lastly, I appreciate what MA has done in past, primarily playing recruiting game. That said, imo you need a second AC splitting part of the function because the work load is too much for one & puts program in vulnerable position counting only on Matt. It also gives MA too much leverage from my view.
I get that Rice would probably be a good hire especially in recruiting. Not sure he would even get the chance though. Has anyone thought maybe the hangup is the school not ready to commit $ to an assistant coach when they are not sure the Head coach will even be here after next season? Because that is where I am at. Put up or go home time for Mullin and Rice will have very little to do with that this upcoming season.

I agree Heron is a critical component of 18-19 success & frankly worry more than many about a positive outcome. I never feel NCAA & a beneficial SJU ruling is a probability. We’ll see in October or so.

So Rice got upset over a clause against doing the things that got him fired?

If that causes things to fall through, I'm not going to blame SJU for now.
Hearing that the termination clause put in place by the administration for throwing basketballs at players and calling them despicably derogatory names was reportedly when negotiations hit a snag.
Don’t think so

Our "junior assistant coach" does one heck of a job. Already in his 3rd college gig. He'd be somewhere else if he didn't love SJU so much. Yes we need another recruiter but Matt is pretty damned senior in my book.

Didn't mean it as a knock on Matt. Should have used better words. Matt is awesome. We need a 2nd guy with experience.
So to sum up yesterday:

- Still no word on Rice
- The schedule sucks
- We're on the outside looking in on key recruits
- Trimble is still large
- We still can't close

Maybe we'll get a "summer Friday afternoon news dump" with an assistant coaching hire - the PR firm someone suggested we hire would certainly recommend that given the likely blowback.
You forgot: Still no Athletic Director.

I am pretty sure that was said "tongue in check" as a joke.

Hopefully by the time I return from a few days at the beach with my family next Thursday we will have either hired Rice or promoted Mitch:)
I'm going to take a nap. When I wake up, if the money is on the table, I'll know I have a partner. If it isn't, I'll know I don't.

72, I have read that Lee Strasberg, who played Hyman Roth, received a call from Meyer Lansky, complimenting him for his portrayal.

I haven’t posted much on this topic. We definitely need another assistant coach on the recruiting trail. I am not sure why it would be Rice or nobody. I thought it would be good for recruits to see Mullin and Richmond on the staff but for whatever reason this has not worked out.

Whatever prevails with our assistant coaches I think Heron being eligible is key to the team making the tournament. Without him I don’t know if they are good enough to not slip up on an easy out of conference schedule or be a top 4 team in what is always a good league. I also wonder if he will stick around another year if he can’t play this year. This year’s recruiting is huge as the two transfer sit outs are both question marks. I love Mullin but I still believe this won’t end well unless we get a break sooner then later.

Oops haha... the first thing I did today after waking up was check Redmen. Guess I should've taken a few minutes to fully wake up before replying haha. :)

The absence of ‘closure’ Is stressing me out. I’m going to ‘dial-it-down a couple notches.Too early for vino, maybe I’ll take a nap as well.

Two possible reasons for a hold up and possible cooling off:

1. Rice threw a basketball at Mullin during negotiations in his office.

2. Rice is playing hardball and asking for way more than we are comfortable with

In any event, I never said it had to be Rice, but we 100% need to hire someone else. But I'm sure someone will give me the ol' "how dare you" for that.

A wine IV during nap also an option

The fact that Coach Mullin had no experience gave us the idea that was more necessary an experienced assistant coach.

With Coach Lavin we also spoke about the assistant coaches: Chiles was the only recruiter (Lavin was a good closer so we didn´t have this problem, at least in the first years), when Dunlap left we spoke about the need of another assistant with good Xs and Os and there were many questions about the work of Hines. The difference is that Hines was not a Hall of Famer and one of our advantages is to have two Hall of Famers in our staff. But if one of them doesn´t appear...

And we went to Elite 8 because Jarvis was a good coach and he had very good players (recruited by two previous coaches)

Most on this site not going to like your last sentence.

Was just joking Adam about the termination clause lol.

I appreciate everyone’s opinion and enthusiasm for the program and it’s happenings. We’re all in the same boat as supporters after all. But I find it absolutely startling how invested a lot of people are in this potential hiring. He is an assistant coach candidate and to say he has baggage is the understatement of the century.

We all have flaws and one of mine is that when it comes to people in the public eye I label them based on their actions. Ray Lewis is a murderer. Pete Rose is a gambler. Tiger Woods is the man. Mike Rice is a guy who throws basketballs at people and calls them nasty names.

Let’s move on because we have a ton of positive things happening in 2019 and beyond fellas!
