a lot of endlessly repetitive chatter

YES,it will resurface but like chicago said we will be prepared for the onslaught and when the smoke clears and rice brings on LEWIS and perhaps more , and we win the big East and move to make noise in the NCAAs all will be forgotten. Bring on the Rice .All ahead and damn the torpedos

Not kidding or adding to the above list, but it might be wise to hire a PR firm for the release of this news. I know the SJU athletic department has the mom & pop reputation, so I gather it is more likely we won't.

That said, a PR firm can help control the narrative. The media will certainly not pass on the chance to air the Rutgers practice videos again, but the context matters. We need to push the rehabilitation story. The manner in which we roll this out will, admittedly, not impact wins and losses, but it's important to invest in your brand. I hope the powers at SJU agree.

Regardless, I am looking forward to Rice being served.
How much publicity do you think a ninth place team in a ten team league hiring as assistant coach is going to garner? It'd be hard to come up with less of a story.
Guarantee gets picked up nationally just because of Rice. Might even see the clip resurface and Eric Murdock being interviewed. ESPN broke original story, I bet they do something with this. If it happens.
You have, perhaps inadvertently, given some insight into part, and I believe just a part, of the "holdup." I know many on here have assumed, that Rice just can't wait for another opportunity, not necessarily the case. It doesn't take a genius to figure out in the current climate of "forgiveness and understanding" we live in that Rice and his family may be in for a considerable amount of shall we say, "bad publicity." Second hand info to me, but logical, is that has to be part of any final decision on Rice's part.

What does picked up nationally mean? That there'll be an in depth feature about it on WABC in Sacramento and 30 point headlines in the Chicago Tribune? RICE DEFEATS RICHMOND! I think not. The Post and the News will run ball washing redemption stories. The Times might run with the LGBTQWERTY bullying angle it if they still have a sports section. ESPN will mention it for a news cycle, as will YES and Fox Sports. And then everyone will be on to the pennant race and NFL training camps and Urban Meyer's cholesterol level and the WNBA draft. It'll run not because it's of any important, but because they need content. If it's a story it's a one day story. This program is irrelevant except to the 200 people who read this board who've created a 20 page thread about the possibility that an assistant coach might be hired.

On the bright side if he is hired and the team has a good season there'll be someone to credit other than Chris Mullin, who's in over his head and knows nothing about basketball.
Will make rounds for couple days and will be a segment on Sports center. Again I really could care less about Mike Rice and his potential effect or lack thereof on the team. I can probably name less the 10 assistant coaches since I have been a fan. Probably most of Louie's and current crop and that is only because it is brought up so much. Last time I got excited about an assistant was with Slice and that didn't work out so great.

But again because of why and how Mike Rice got fired at Rutgers it will garner much more press than a normal assistant coach hire by 9th place team in 10 team league normally would. Which was my only point.

I understand your point and agree that there will be various stories relative to the hire and perhaps more stories than there were when Norm hired Chris Casey and Chuck Martin or when Coach Lavs hired Whitehead or Whitebread or whatever that guy's name was. I disagree with the idea that this is a looming PR disaster and that the wagons need to be circled and specialists hired to mitigate the blow back. Circumstantial evidence of which is that you can't name more than 12 assistants who've served a program that you've followed since you were a ball boy. Rico Hines video-ed himself cheating on his Hollywood actress wife raw by dogging hewers in the same filthy parking that he collected forged community college transcripts. That was a no day story of interest to no one except Tichina Arnold's divorce lawyer an d maybe Martin Lawrence.

Agree, there will be a story, but for a short period. Rice knows there will be some blow back, but I just can’t see it amounting to much after a day or two.

It will be a local story and likely a one day affair everywhere else. The fact remains, as Fun mentioned, we have been the last place team for 3 years running and have an associate head coach earning over half a million per year that Mullin can't fire because it was a game of my balls are bigger than your balls. Compared to the Slice debacle this hire may actually be good publicity.
My only suggestion is that they pay him fairly and if they have to find money they should take it out of Mullin's and Richmond's salaries since they have hardly worked since April and their salaries should be prorated. With Mitch a time and motion study may be in order to calculate what the university should actually be paying him.

I would be much more worried about negative recruiting from opposing coaches. That will never go away. Would have preferred someone with no baggage. Hard to believe that couldn't happen.

There are certain actions that you can recover from, and some that you can't. Throwing balls at and grabbing the jerseys of a bunch of young men that could have torn Rice apart if so inclined is far down on the list of sins, if you even call it that. Rice had anger issues. Plenty of people do. He sought treatment, and reportedly helped others in treatment. This, to me, is a feel good story. A story of recovery, and forgiveness.

Totally agree. The fact that he has been working with even younger kids and hasn’t had any negative reports of similar conduct says (at least to me) that he deserves another shot. There will always be Monday morning quarterbacks and negative chatter by some (in all aspects of life), all that matters is that he’s doing the best he can and being a positive influence to others.

On a separate point, I believe that previous list of SJU assistant coaches omitted Dermon Player.

Don't think the blowback will be big at all, if any. I had coaches in high school who were worse than Rice. How long would Bob Knight have a job at Indiana if he coached in this decade?

All Ac’s aren’t created equal. AC’s with credible HC experience are not a dime a dozen. Fewer yet come equipped with great NY MSA HS and AAU links. Even fewer with solid x/o skills.
There’s a trade-off in about everything under the Sun.
Rice’s melt-down at Rutgers and anger management issues are his...and come with his otherwise above-average portfolio.
If he has dealt with the anger-management issues and seeks redemption for that episode in his life —which seems the case—that’s great, and we should all welcome him to the team and program.

This has got to be very close to the all-time record for longest thread talking about the possible hire of an assistant coach. We really know how to perseverate!

Hopefully by the time I return from a few days at the beach with my family next Thursday we will have either hired Rice or promoted Mitch:)
