a lot of endlessly repetitive chatter

From what we've heard from Paultz, Rice doesn't have any other D-1 assistant coaching offers on the table other than, potentially, St John's. If that's the case, Rice is not negotiating this contract from a position of strength. If this deal falls through, he's still an AAU coach. So, while he would like a certain salary and other perks, he may have to temper his expectations in his first contract to get his "foot back in the door" and prove himself to be the kind of coach and person he will be expected to be. Once he accomplishes that goal, he will be in a far stronger negotiating position the next time around.
Do we think it would be a two-year deal? Longer? Some sort of annual rollover like Norm had? Does he start in the low 2s? I think we pay everyone else in the high 3s and 4s, so how low is too low before it seems like a slap in the face? (I assume it would have to be a real lowball offer in this case to cause anger considering the situation.)

Not sure any of this would be revealed, but I'm really interested in those details.
I would bet all of the ACs have one year contracts. After “Slicegate” I would think common sense is in the equation now.

Time to #close

I realize some of us including myself especially are being a bit impatient, but you have to admit this has taken a very long time even considering the complex contract.
Two weeks doesn't seem extraordinarily long to me. It was speculated many times here that finishing out the AAU season was beneficial to all parties involved, and that just ended.
Two weeks ? Today is August 8th, his season ended 6 days ago.
As has been said 1000 times, though some posters will never get it or are incapable of of getting it, he was coaching a top 10 AAU team, he could just not abandon the AAU team, if he abandoned the team his players would have no trust in him, players every school wants, it would not be viewed favourably by the new school, it would be used against him by every other school when recruiting in the future, and he needs a squeaky clean rep going forward, we are still paying Slice, we have no AD, contracts take time especially this one which would call for additional protection, drafting amongst lawyers takes time.
As long as this is done before the kids start school this semester all is good.
I the interim Paultzman has said things are looking good and progressing.
Can we all please relax ?

On top of all that, doesn't the head coach need to be around when the announcement is made?;)

Assuming Rice comes, it Richmond sliding over or staying in Cali ?

Is Matic gone as DOBO and Luca sliding over ?

Today's excuse for not getting the Rice contract done will be:

1. There are a lot of complex issues blah blah blah
2. No AD
3. AAU season just ended
4. Haggling over bucks
5. Rice upset he wasn't invited to Dodgeball practice yesterday
6. Waiting for updated insurance policy to be bound
7. The Ghost of Slice refuses to budge on revised buyout that would have him fully paid off before Bobby Bonilla
8. Mitch has to sign amendment to his agreement and can't be located
9. Printer out of toner

Needs to finalize details with Mullin and has to fly to California but the wildfires have cancelled all flights.

These are very funny, WCJF! Up to 11 now, with 'Mullin started with nothing.' (he did!) and 'Empty Stapler'. Gotta luv it and laugh. I think this is what happens after 20+years of losing and disappointment. Human nature. But, we're almost 'there'! Let's go Johnnies!

Not kidding or adding to the above list, but it might be wise to hire a PR firm for the release of this news. I know the SJU athletic department has the mom & pop reputation, so I gather it is more likely we won't.

That said, a PR firm can help control the narrative. The media will certainly not pass on the chance to air the Rutgers practice videos again, but the context matters. We need to push the rehabilitation story. The manner in which we roll this out will, admittedly, not impact wins and losses, but it's important to invest in your brand. I hope the powers at SJU agree.

Regardless, I am looking forward to Rice being served.

How much publicity do you think a ninth place team in a ten team league hiring as assistant coach is going to garner? It'd be hard to come up with less of a story.

Well someone was saying late July/early August.
Well on Monday, it was be mid August, and we're still waiting hahaha.

Exactly why I said just wait before getting all happy and excited.
I gotta laugh. It's how it's done at SJU.

National news like ESPN will show the video, but also mention how he's attempted to rehab himself.

I'm more concerned about a local sportscaster with a schtick who'll show the video and say something snippy.

Eager to see if it makes it to buy or sell discussions on Around the Horn or PtI, though.

Guarantee gets picked up nationally just because of Rice. Might even see the clip resurface and Eric Murdock being interviewed. ESPN broke original story, I bet they do something with this. If it happens.

Excellent point, 'we are sju'. Hope St. John's is ready with a well-thought out response, and constructive 'spin'. Perception is reality.

What does picked up nationally mean? That there'll be an in depth feature about it on WABC in Sacramento and 30 point headlines in the Chicago Tribune? RICE DEFEATS RICHMOND! I think not. The Post and the News will run ball washing redemption stories. The Times might run with the LGBTQWERTY bullying angle it if they still have a sports section. ESPN will mention it for a news cycle, as will YES and Fox Sports. And then everyone will be on to the pennant race and NFL training camps and Urban Meyer's cholesterol level and the WNBA draft. It'll run not because it's of any important, but because they need content. If it's a story it's a one day story. This program is irrelevant except to the 200 people who read this board who've created a 20 page thread about the possibility that an assistant coach might be hired.

On the bright side if he is hired and the team has a good season there'll be someone to credit other than Chris Mullin, who's in over his head and knows nothing about basketball.

At a gentleman's club near you. Remember to wear a top hat and monocle.
