40 Minutes Of "P.U."
I am thrilled that we were lucky enough to get Coach MA. I told my son in the second half that it is great to have a coach as good as Tom Becker(Vermont Coach). My son said is he really? and I said he is but more experienced. I also love the aggressive style of defense. There have been more open three point shooters than I would like at times but am hoping that will get better with time.

A few observations on the team so far -
- Champagnaie is impressive and has a ton of confidence in his game. He was taking it at Lamb in the first half and while he had moderate success, he is a Freshman who has played four games. His game will definitely translate to a higher level even if there are some growing pains. His three point shot will also start to fall.
- Roberts is fun to watch. He is a very different type of player than Julian so you can't really compare them. He is doing a great job at shot blocking and a very good job following shots. He is also rebounding better than expected.I things shot blocking will immediately translate to higher levels but probably with more fouls. His scoring and rebounding may take a little longer but for a player who is effectively a Freshman I am impressed.
- Earlington plays very hard and has more ability than I expected. I see him more as an energy player at this point. He will get less minutes once Steere is available. He still looks more to me like a solid mid major player but hope he is willing to hang around as a role player.
-Caraher - Like others I would like to see more of him. We obviously need shooters and while I don't believe he is as good a 3 point shooter as is being portrayed he is a better player than I expected. He can hold his own on the court. That said we need him as an outside shooter and would like to see him get more shots off to see how much he should play. Like Earlington he looks more like the solid mid major player that he was before he got here. Hopes he just keeps shooting every day in practice.
- Williams - He is a great athlete who is very quick on the court. He is a good defender in this system but he has little on the offensive end and don't think it's only the injury. He will make the occasional spectacular play because he is an outstanding athlete but is not a good shooter and is small to be an effective slasher with his skill set. I still hope he can get better and can reduce the turnovers as he is a very good defensive sub.
Dunn - too early to judge but wow is he quick. Despite the huge 3 that is not his strength or is being a pure point guard. Looks good on defense and will help by attacking the basket but probably not more than a good mid major guard.
Heron - As Monte said probably the same player he has been his last three seasons. He will be hot and cold. Has looked to pass a little more which is great but unfortunately the player he usually passes is to is not a good shooter(not his fault). We need more of his A games than his C games. Fingers crossed.
Figgy - He is the guy that needs to step up and be our Anthony Lamb in big games. He missed a bunch of floaters against Vermont but that was unusual. A very talented player who will be our team MVP.
Sears and Rutherford are role players. I would not expect to see a lot of minutes out of either particularly Sears once Steere is eligible.

I would put theater/under on Big East wins at 5. It will be a fight to be .500 or above this year but think MA is very close.
Great analysis Andrew. Agree completely. Here's the thing; Fig thrived as a 2nd or 3rd option last year. He was not the player other teams focused on, that was Shamorie. Plus we had multiple scoring options on last year's team, so Fig could pick his spots. He was phenomenal in that role. This year he is the man. He's got to carry a very heavy load, especially on nights when Heron doesn't bring his A game. Other teams are going to focus on him, including trying to take away his long jumper/set shot and preventing drives to the hoop. Against lesser team he can create for himself, that is not going to be the case against better comp. If we cannot get Heron to play more consistently, and if we cannot find some other scoring options(Dunn? Roberts? Caraher?), then Fig is going to have a tough time meeting expectation. Certainly not his fault.

A good post, Andrew. The only thing I'll disagree with is our Big East conference record. I just can't say one way or the other until Steere suits up and have a few games under his belt.

I've said it several times already, but I think between mid-January to early February we're gonna see a team that's really gonna be tough to deal with. Winning 8 conference games as mentioned by '72 could be very possible.

Steere is a big guy and definitely could make a difference. If the team gets better as the season goes along I will be very pleased.

He could very well Steere us in the right direction. Apologies if something similar has been posted before. Between him and Dunn, the possibilities for humor are endless lol

Doc keep posting although I don't always agree I like your stuff.

Tough losses like this bring out the passion. Maybe just maybe this team will take a lesson from the "L".

Agree. I think his post was written out of frustration after a tough loss. I do get it. And I don't like the personal attacks on him even if you think he's 100% wrong.
Even “master tactician” Mike Dunlap is 31-57 at Loyola Marymount after last few years. Talent wins ballgames fellas. It will take some time.
Exactly. Which is why some posters are hoping for some effort recruiting studs. If everyone gets hard every time a two star player is signed, there's no incentive to do better. I don't hear anyone calling for coach Anderson's early ouster. That would be ludicrous. I would like him to know we'd like to be something like we were during the 80s...not as we were during the Norm/Harrington debacle.

agree. But Anderson wasn’t gonna land any significant players such short notice before this season. Just enough to field a team. For next year, we have a kid who was a 4-star before breaking his arm in Posh. At least one, maybe 2 juco All americans. Go to town on Wusu if you must because he’s not super highly ranked but he’s putting up great numbers. Agree wholeheartedly we need better talent but don’t use Lavin’s first class as a measuring stick for that. That’s a rare thing and Lavin parlayed some of his stardom and connections for that first class.

We are going to have to do some winning and show that the Program is stable before we land better recruits. Highly ranked kids want to go to the NBA. How many of our own are in the NBA? One? Mo Harkless? Don’t know if Jakar Sampson is still sticking. Either way, not exactly a plethora or pipeline for NBA talent. It’s a cold hard reality, the Program is not viewed the way we would like it to be. Be honest we had a former NBA Dream Teamer recruiting and exactly what great players chose to come to SJU?

It’s not 1985 anymore. My hope is Coach MA can recruit some hungry kids with enough talent and win some games while working hard. Then maybe, just maybe, we can land some better talent to put us back in the top of the Big East. Anyone who can’t see our reality is delusional. Their is no magic coach that is going to come and automatically wave his wand and bring in top recruits. This is going to take time and effort. No doubt about it.

Our constant coaching turnover also doesn’t help recruiting.
Doc, IMO, I think your posts tend to run into trouble because it has a certain pomposity and know-it-all aura to 'em. Even your exit post had a grandiose delivery (I wasn't aware we had to "appreciate" someone's post). Whether you're aware of it or not; I'm not sure. But it comes off that way to me, and based on some of the responses you've received, it seems others think that way as well. I've also spoken to a couple of posters offline in the past, and they also view it the same way.

You are who you are, and no one is trying to change how you go about things. But I promise you that you're gonna continue to rub some folks the wrong way by your style and delivery.
The fact that he had to start his own thread to provide his observations instead of including this in the post game thread definitely shows a level of pompous lol

I have no idea what Steere can contribute, but as of now Roberts, Champ and Earlington are averaging about 10 points and 7 or so rebounds. Whose place is gonna take and can he put up those kind of numbers?

For those not familiar with Doc Butler he is a musician like Fun in his alter ego. Hence my reference to him as Guitar Man (Bread). All artists are sensitive and tend to take artistic license. Fun voluntarily suspended his license here on redmen.com after suffering 3 straight losing seasons under the guest appearance by his hero. He has reinvented himself under another pseudonym on that other board together with Baldi and Marillac. When the going gets rough some suburbanites get going. Being a Long Island boy, Doc is following in that path but the kitchen may get hot here after losses but he and his views are always welcomed. We are not Antifa here and are not afraid of others opinions.
Welcome back Doc!B) B)

Didn't we hear that steere is out most talented big? If so then he should avg more than them. Not right away, but eventually

I thought that Doc wasn't filmed during his undergrad days but I was mistaken.

He’s not our most talented big, he’s our only real center. Adding him should be a big boost for ya by committee. I’m not concerned with his numbers right off the bat. I want to see him grab rebounds, defend the post against bigger guys and try to dunk on everybody.
