2024-25 Rankings

AP Poll 2/10/25:
#9 St. John's
#18 Marquette
#24 Creighton
---
#27 UConn
#30 New Mexico

Just 7 points behind #8 Texas A&M, but #9 is still our highest ranking since the final poll of the 1999-00 season, when we were also ranked #9.

That Creighton game just got so much better now that they're ranked!

Wow, you still had a paper boy delivering your Newsday 25 years ago ?

I’m skeptical only because kids long ago gave up delivering newspapers

It’s like waiting for all the Kids in the neighborhood to come and ask to shovel your driveway .
I waited all day one time , 40 or so years ago and not 1 kid ever came .

It was tough enough even getting a guy with a plow to come regularly . For $100 bucks .

The Paper boy became the guy in the Car who drove past your house and threw the paper in the general vicinity of your house .
Which he did over 1000 times a day to earn peanuts .

About rankings , just notice for every BE team we beat who has been ranked above us previously , they drop like flies the next week and we rise a bit .

We keep beating Creighton , UCONN, Marquette in the remaining games and none of them could be ranked

Then , the NCAA guys will say , “ look how weak the BE is , only 1 team , St John’s is ranked “

Don’t discount that idea , the NCAA isn’t a friend of the BE.
 
Even though I knew we'd be in the Top 10... still surreal to scroll through that list and see the likes of Kansas, Kentucky, Zona, Mich St... all BEHIND us...

Season is something else... awesome.

I'm Revising my Nova prediction! lol.... 2-0 this week - #5 next week!

You’re just jet lagged from your vacation which is causing you not to be able to focus on your first day back at work.

not 25 years ago that was when I still lived at home until 96. I'm going by my college days 88-92

I can’t complain. Last time in the top 10 we had just survived Y2K.

My kids who are turning 22 in June weren’t even conceived yet.

My brother who moved to Canada 22 years ago was still living in NJ.

I could move enough to play basketball in a league at Chelse Piers.

There are even posters now who have no recollection of watching EricK Barkley play.

Long time.
 
A question for those who may know. I read that the selection committee doesn't use the AP and Coaches polls but utilizes other tools including NET (the #1 ranking tool), KenPom and the Basketball Power Index. We are ranked from 16-20 in those three. Why are we so low compared to the AP and Coaches polls?

It seems like that but other than the SEC taking over College Basketball we have more teams than the ACC and a similar percentage of teams as the Big 12 and the Big 10.

Certainly the state schools would like us to go away but hopefully we have a few more years in us.

The overly simplistic answer is that our offensive metrics really weigh us down in predictive computer models (Kenpom, Torvik, Miya).

If you look at KenPom, our defense is #2 but offense is #83. No school ahead of us is lower than #39 on offense or defense. You have to get to #23 Kentucky to find another school sub-80 on anything (#90 on defense). BPI has us #3 defensively, Torvik has us #3 defense and #103 offense, etc.

That said, the BPI resume metrics are looking great for us right now. We're #6 in strength of record. Torvik's WAB (wins above bubble) has us #10.

AP writers and coaches aren't beholden to models, which will lead to some randomness.

I was going to leave it to you or one of what I call the analytics guys to give an articulate answer like above.

The other part is that the rankings are voted on by humans and everything else is spit out by a computer. I do understand enough that the computer’s assumptions are being programmed by humans but for how long.
