2024-25 Rankings

At the moment the highest-ranked team in history that has not beaten a single ranked team. OK I made that up but I can't be far off.

Let's get rid of the asterisk tomorrow. 💪
The positive about not beating a ranked team is that it will keep them hungry.

They are aware of what is being said, and they were also reminded of their defensive lull against PC.

I expect a fired up group ready to quiet all doubters.

Some obscure stats of the good news bad news variety ahead of our Top 20 matchups this week with #11 Marquette and #19 UConn.

All rankings reflected from AP poll

The good news:
We are (13-2) when ranked 12th and are currently riding a 7-game winning streak.

The bad news:
Last loss as the 12th ranked team was against Georgetown at McDonough (Feb 4, 1976) led by George Johnson and Glen Williams 20 pts each. Damn, tomorrow is February 4th.

When facing the 11th ranked team, we have lost 8 straight, with the last win against UCLA (Dec.13,1986) led by Shelton Jones 21 points.

When facing the 19th ranked team, we have lost 9 straight, with the last win against Indiana (NCAA Rd2 - Mar.13,1999) led by Bootsy Thornton 17 points.

But what happens when the moon is in the seventh house and Jupiter aligns with Mars?

Where I think we'll be next week depending on the two games this week:

0-2: Anywhere from low 20's to out of the rankings completely
1-1: Won't move much at all. Could potentially even move up based on how the rest of the Top 25 does.
2-0: Top 5

Personally I'd be happy with at least a 1-1 week. Beat either Marquette at home or UConn on the road and enthusiasm will remain high. Just can't go 0-2 because that'd kill momentum. We're favored vs Marquette, so let's hope we can take that one and go from there.

Top 5 is a stretch. Remember 7 teams ahead of us would all have to lose. That's extremely unlikely. But let's go 2-0 and then worry about it.

True that it’s hard to just jump teams and I probably agree that top 5 is too much. But these two wins would be more than just two wins, and there are still plenty of voters who Havnt given us their ultimate respect yet. Plenty of mid teen and 20’s votes that would no longer be able to claim hesitancy or ignorance.

I disagree, we could absolutely jump 7 teams by beating top opponents. The last few weeks we've had to rely on other teams losing because we weren't playing ranked teams. Just for example Texas Tech moved up 9 spots this week (the most of any) by beating #6 Houston and a mediocre TCU team. Beat two ranked teams and we'll be top 5, worst case something like #6 if the rest of the top 10 does well.

I don't agree, but let's just go 2-0 first and then worry about it lol

Absolutely cannot go 0-2, that would be disaster, not only for momentum, but also the haters.would also be taking their bs. Don't want to go hear it. 1-1 is I'm guessing what most is expecting, now 2-0 is a freaking statement, if we do that then we'll probably be most likely around 7th or 8th. It says we're back in a major way.

It's a lot harder to move that far up when you are already pretty high up to begin with. For example STJ would have had to jump 7 spots on average on every voters ballots to get into the top 5 this week. . Would take a lot of bad losses by the top 10 to do that. Especially since they're already in the top 10 on more than 20% of ballots. But hey, let's go 2-0 and hope for the best!

I agree that we can get into the top 5 if we go 2-0. There's 13 voters that have us outside the top 15. If we beat Marquette and UConn, those guys will be giving us a much bigger ranking -- that'll go a long way.

Yep I agree that it's a lot harder to move up the higher you go, and I'm not implying that St. John's would have a top 5 resume at that point (we wouldn't), but so much of the AP voting is based on momentum and we'd without question be one of the top 5 hottest teams in college basketball. We'd be the #1 team in the Big East- by far. Only 3 losses by 5 points, 10 game winning streak.

If we win tomorrow I'll revisit this, I haven't looked at who the Top 11 teams are playing. If they're playing a lot of ranked teams and beat them all then yes that'd change things, but if it's a typical week where several of them lose and others just beat up on decent opponents then I'm thinking top 5.
