2024-25 Rankings

This one has us at #8 (!!!). He had us #19 last week. Wild.

His quote is hilarious too. "8. St. John’s (19-3) — I considered voting the Red Storm higher but Rick Pitino was not pleased with the way they finished the Providence game Saturday."

I think the range is anywhere from #11-14 (#14 would mean teams like Missouri would pass us), but #12 or #13 are definitely most likely.

bucketshardy's post above is what I think is most likely with the AP putting us one spot above Marquette since we're ahead in the standings. Marquette still has the better resume certainly, so who knows.

Also we're now up to a 6 seed on Bracket Matrix! Would be huge to get to a 5 seed and avoid playing an at-large team.
Not much difference in record between the 11 and 12 seeds in the first round(I believe 12 seeds have a slightly better record). Teams like McNeese State, UC Irvine, Drake or someone like Yale always pull upsets. Better to play a 4 seed in the second round but if you win that possibly a 1 seed vs 2. I would still prefer the 5 seed because it means we have played well to end the season.

That's true the 12 seeds are usually tough, but just for example last year the 11 seeds were NC State, Oregon, Duquesne, and New Mexico. The 12 seeds were Grand Canyon, McNeese, UAB, and James Madison. The former group would scare me a lot more. That is a good point though about the following games potentially being easier, but I still prefer the idea of avoiding a team like NC State or Oregon round 1. Especially the First Four 11 seed winners can be tough. I certainly wouldn't mind either way being a 5 or 6 seed regardless. Mostly just want to avoid being an 8/9 seed, which we're past right now.

While I love where we are right now, these rankings mean nothing. We still have to get through the 5 games against MQ, Uconn and Creighton. And games at Nova and Butler are never easy. After seeing UConn slug it out at MQ on Saturday night, these upcoming games are really going to be our toughest all season, and enhanced by the perch the rankings have us on.

AP Poll 2/3/25:
#11 Marquette (-2)
#12 St. John's (+3)
#19 UConn (+6)
---
#29 Creighton
#32 New Mexico
#37 Baylor

Exactly where I and others expected at #12, and nice to be one spot behind Marquette. I like playing the underdog role a bit there even though we should be favored. Highest ranking since March 2000 where we finished #9! Chance to outdo that for a top 5ish ranking next Monday.
