2024-25 Rankings

I’m cautiously optimistic about how they’ll do against Marquette & UConn. I know it’s bad luck to talk about future games but I’m not on the team & I trust Coach Pitino will continue doing an amazing job keeping this team focused so…

If St John’s wins the next 3 games they’re going to be the talk of college basketball. This team will be the biggest story in the sport if they can pull it off. I know we’d all prefer wins & postseason success to media attention but the table is set…The return of an old power, Rick Pitino as a central character, NYC and the Garden getting behind a winner, the fact that the team is actually very good, etc. I know it’s bad juju to bring up but it’s pretty close and a real possibility.
Don’t worry about bad juju. Pitino told his team to remain humble. He said nothing about us fans. 😉😁

I think with the win at Georgetown we'll remain ranked next Monday regardless of the outcome on Saturday, that's how strong this run has been (once you're #15 it's very tough to fall completely out of the rankings with 1 loss), but obviously really want to beat PC. Can't wait to go to that game, will be the highest ranked Johnnies team I've ever watched in-person.

If we do win on Saturday (as we should), then looking at what our AP ranking could be next Monday: so far this week all almost all teams ahead of us have won. #8 Tennessee lost to #12 Kentucky, but I wouldn't expect to pass Tennessee. #14 Mississippi St also lost to #4 Alabama tonight. so as of now we'd likely just take their spot and move up to #14. Nothing like last week where #11-19 all lost, but we're still one spot closer to the top 10.

AP Top 25 teams that have lost at the midway point this week:
#3 Iowa St
#8 Tennessee
#14 Mississippi St
#16 Oregon
#17 Wisconsin
#18 Illinois

4 teams surrounding us have lost, but only one of them is ahead of us, so as of today we'd likely be #14. Beat PC and I'm guessing we'll be around #12-13 on Monday.

Today's game wasn't the best for our metrics, but I absolutely loved it. Possibly the best St. John's game I've been to given it was the highest ranked St. John's team I've seen play in person... and this team didn't blow it! First game I've seen my 2 year old get into, too (along with her cousins).

We got some help today from other teams. Looking at AP Top 25 teams that lost (see above too, as of yesterday we would've likely been #14 in the AP):

#14 Mississippi St lost a second time this week, so we'll obviously pass them.

#3 Iowa St lost a second time this week, this time thanks to the help of Kansas St beating them by 19!! I'm not sure if they'll drop enough for us to pass them, but there's a shot.

#11 Kansas lost to Baylor by 11... another big boost from an old rival which helps us in multiple ways! Not positive we'll pass them, but a good shot we will.

Still more games to play this weekend, but right now looking at #12 or #13 most likely. Another step toward the Top 10 before our MASSIVE week next week!

We will pass Kansas. They had a horrendous collapse against Houston, held on for dear life against UCF, then today choked against a struggling Baylor team.

I understand the excitement with the rankings. I am thrilled, but now we are in position to do some damage. More important than metrics and seeding is being whole and healthy at the start of the NCAA Tournament. With that said I wouldn’t kick a top 10 ranking out of bed for eating crackers.

The right focus Ken

#7 Michigan State loses @ USC, but we probably won't pass MSU.

#6 Houston loses to #22 Texas Tech. I don't think we'll pass Houston but I could see Texas Tech potentially passing us.

Even though these results may not help us this week, if we do well enough next week they would be beneficial.

Wrapping up the weekend (Sunday's results won't impact us):

#9 Marquette loses to #25 UConn. Our rankings will be very close but not sure if we'll pass them. Personally I wouldn't mind being behind them on Tuesday.

#12 Kentucky loses to a bad Arkansas team (and Calipari), but earlier this week they beat #8 Tennessee.

#20 Missouri won at #14 Mississippi St (mentioned above) and while Mississippi St will fall below us Missouri could pass us.

On Sunday the highest ranked team playing will be #16 and none of the teams would pass us with a win.

We'll be around #12 or #13 on Monday, but regardless it'll be our highest ranking since 2000!

Not a rankings guy at all but the “legitimacy”, if that word can even be applied to a subjective, name recognition driven opinion poll, of the Johnnie’s number will be clarified as it were in the next two weeks. If they bring the D possession by possession, IMO, they will be fine.
