2024-25 Rankings

Down goes #17 Illinois! The only Top 25 team ahead of us that played tonight, and they lost by 21 to an unranked Maryland team.

This week the following teams ahead of us have lost thus far:
#11 Purdue (Vs Ohio St)
#14 Mississippi St (@ #6 Tennessee)
#16 Ole Miss (Vs #13 Texas A&M)
#17 Illinois (Vs Maryland)
#18 Wisconsin (@ UCLA)

If the AP voted today we'd probably be #17 or #18, passing the latter 2 or 3, but still a lot more games to play this weekend.
I think we come in at 15 Monday…

Also- I think UConn loses at X this weekend.

Want them ranked when we play them home.

Interesting that all the teams in the AP top 25 after #9 (9-19) have less wins than St. Johns has at 16. Another indication that the Big East in general, and STJ in particular being undervalued.
And that’s very concerning. With that, a repeat of last years Dance invites or even getting limited to 4 invites would be a difficult thing to overcome seasonally. The teams that do get invites will have to do more in the Dance then just show up. It may be the only way the league can gain credibility going forward.

Ironically, the BE even in this permutation has usually over performed in the NCAA tourney. So the teams that get in typically represented the conference very well. The conference should not have to justify itself, but other self serving forces (football conference dominance) are at work to marginalize the BE.

It’s those power football conferences that are the main concern. When tournament models come out with 13 SEC teams and 10 Big Ten teams while the Big East is projected as 4, it is imperative that our teams do well in the OOC games against them. I believe that the loss that will have the most negative affect on the Johnnies and the conference at large was the loss to Georgia.

It's a shame seeing the SEC and Big Ten buying their way to college basketball dominance, especially since they haven't won the Tournament since 2012 and 2000 (!!!).

At the same time though, St. John's is doing the same thing. We haven't been truly great since the Big Ten last won a championship, but when NIL and money is involved that doesn't matter. Being at the top of an okay Power conference is a million times better than being close to the bottom of a great Power conference (as we were for most of the past 25 years), and I do expect the Big East to rebound some next year regardless.

Things won't always be perfect, and who knows what will happen in the future, but for now I'm very happy with how things are going.

Ask BC fans how they like the ACC.... or Syracuse.
