2024-25 Rankings

The term “must win” is dumb. If we lost to DePaul, Georgetown, and Butler in the future, but swept UConn and Marquette we would still be in. If we lost those earlier “must wins” like people claimed Nova or Georgetown was and then swept UConn and Marquette we would be in so clearly those weren’t must wins. Now if we lost those previous games, it would be hard to sweep UConn and Marquette but those games would be the “must wins”. Those games were should wins and I’m glad we won because it bought us breathing room but they definitely weren’t must wins. Last must win we had was UConn in the Big East tournament. There is still plenty we can do this season to impact our resume so having something as “must win” in January for this team was asinine.

Top 25 is nice but the partnership of Shanley/Pitino has other significant accomplishments in their short time together.
1 Improved roster last year and then again this year
2 Improved fan interest / attendance last year and again this year. The eighteen thousand for the Villanova game was a statement for NY college basketball
3 Establishment of a successful NIL process with particular emphasis on the bringing back of Mike Repole to the program. Losing Mike as a supporter was one of the dumbest things SJU did and shows the difference between the old regime and the Shanley /Pitino duo.

Yes, this is the first time that I've been a fan (since 2012) that it feels we have a legit Top 25 (will finish there), and it's a direct result of those 3 reasons. In the past we usually needed to pull off big upsets just to sniff the Top 25 RV.

I'm not a fan of where college sports are heading, but St. John's has taken advantage of how massive NIL is. No more waiting 3-4 years for a St. John's coach to "rebuild".

I'm not a fan of KPI as a metric, but to give perspective to anyone who thinks the Seton Hall game may give us some big boost tomorrow...

KPI rated every win except Wagner, Harvard and Fordham as stronger wins than Seton Hall. Yes, that means KPI determined that Delaware, Bryant, and Quinnipiac wins higher. The DePaul win is seen as 2x better, literally (.145 vs. .292).

I'm exhausted by the really boring talk about "must win". Bottom line is, we need to win every Q3 game on our schedule to avoid a bad loss. Georgetown and Seton Hall were Q3 games. Providence game is also Q3. Seton Hall in March is a Q4 game.

There's no "must wins" until there are "must wins". Beat Depaul, Seton Hall + 2/5 from Marq/Creighton/UConn is the floor for not sweating on selection sunday.

I expect us to be more stressed about the BET and debating about seeding instead.
I agree mostly dk . But I think we need 3 of the 5 vs Marquette, UConn and Creighton to really set ourselves up for a higher seed. 2 of the 5 and I agree we’re not sweating come selection Sunday. 3 of the 5 and we’re in a really good spot. This team can do it as long as Smith is healthy.

A second AP ballot is in:

He has us at #19 today, while last week he had us unranked. The first AP ballot was just a one spot increase week to week, so this 7 spot jump is pretty surprising, but hey I'll take it.

On average the week to week increase from the two AP ballots is 4, which would put us at #22.

Going to do some sledding with my kid, so may not post any more ballots before the poll drops, but I'm thinking we'll be around #23.

Talk to me Thursday a.m. We will be ranked in the latest polls but want to stay there and rise.

Far off dreams of a 3 or 4 seed. Until then grind it out one at a time. Take care of business home and away, and protect the homecourt vs. Marquette, UCONN, Creighton.
