2024-25 Rankings

Rankings, NET; metrics all are fun to look at but I’m looking at 1 thing above all else. Big East standings. I want that conference crown in the regular season, screw it. Let’s aim high!
It’s also one hundred percent based on quaint wins and losses.

Very little movement overall above us with Purdue the only large move from #23 to #15... They beat Nebraska at home yesterday by 36, and 18 on road v. Rutgers.

Seems clear that winning by large margins matter.

The whole concept that the NET is used to rank teams for quality of win purpose but the NET doesn’t dictate where your resume ranks is absurd. If it’s not all encompassing enough to be used to rank resumes why are we using it to compare teams wins? So much ambiguity, some is okay but it’s become a guessing game.

I believe we finished #32.
Last year and this year are a little different. We beat Kansas State and Virginia easily as opposed to losing to Michigan and BC.

However the top of the conference was stronger as Marquette, UCONN and Creighton were top teams. We went 1-6 against them including the Big East Tournament.

We also had 14 quad 1 games going 4-10 This season we are likely to only have 9 or 10 and we are 1-3 even though the losses are close.

One big plus this season is that our other analystics like Pomeroy and Torvik are much higher to date then where we finished last season. That is why games like Georgetown at home feel like must wins.

What I think the NET is saying about St. John’s is that we lose too many close games and usually lose to the best teams we play.

To summarize our position at this point is better then last season but we have to play like every game is an NCAA tournament game. We want to make it clear we belong.

St. John's would have to seriously underperform Vegas odds over the next couple months to not make the Tournament. I'd be very surprised if we don't make it.

As for today's upcoming AP, nearly all of the results from yesterday and Saturday night made it more difficult for St. John's to join the rankings, but even if we're not we'll be one of the top RV. Only a couple ballots have been posted online, but my guess is we'll be around #27. Go 2-0 this week and we should be ranked next week.

AP Poll 1/13/25:
#7 Marquette (-)
#14 UConn (-5)
----
#26 St. John's (+5) - 83 points

#23 Georgia and #25 Baylor (119 points) both entered the poll this week. New Mexico also picked up a couple points.

Just outside the rankings (as expected), but go 2-0 this week and I like our chances for next Monday.
