2023-24 Roster

I really like the idea of Luis coming off the bench spotting the 3/4 spots, and even the 2.
Now here is where “He is Rick Pitino” really does come into play. Whatever he decides to do with starting 5 and rotation will have a basketball reason behind it and personally I wouldn’t question it. But if someone does I don’t feel it is against the law either.

The “buzz” around this roster for next season is off the charts. I compare it to the Felipe/Zendon hype which never really went where we wanted. Sure we had the Artest/Bootsy/Barkley era but not sure the preseason buzz. I think we knew that team was good but we probably were a little spoiled by the CM era.

I am now totally in and am super curious who that final piece will be on the roster. So many good choices, so little information (probably a good thing). Damn, Pitino and his staff has me dreaming about college hoops in May. That in and of itself tells you what they are doing. Anything is possible. You can feel the energy.

To put pre season buzz/hype into perspective since Louie retired STJ has been ranked in the preseason AP poll exactly once since Louie retired. That was the year following the Artest/Barkley elite 8 run and they were ranked 18. In Louie's last 10 years he was ranked preseason 50% of the time. That is of course from a national perspective, locally there has been a good amount of hype or buzz a few times since then in the era's you are talking about, even more so on this site and it's predecessors.

Hey Fellas, first post in probably a decade. I am Cole’s brother, Shaun. He’s really proud and grateful amaseinyourface lets him guest appear on the POD. They do an awesome job and I really suggest y’all check it out. Redmen trip to UCLA under Coach Lavs was a blast. Meeting Austour, Maher and Raczok was awesome, great people. We had a hall of fame beer drinking performance that trip. We should do another trip! Anybody going to Charleston this year?

Back on topic, I said on a SJUBB Twitter space, congrats really needs to go out to all the longtime fans with the Pitino acquisition. We were very close to the program under Coach Lavin for a variety of reasons but have certainly remained enthusiastic. We’ve been die hard fans since our old man started teaching accounting at SJU in late 90’s early 00’s, 25 years and 3 SJU degrees between the two of us later and this truly feels like a return to relevance. We tasted it under Lavin but this is time to go ALL IN!

To echo the sentiments of the boys on the podcast, I’ve never once felt concerned about the direction of the program in the up-and-down start to the Pitino era. He’s going to right this ship. He’s forgotten more about basketball then I’ll ever hope to know.

The Dingle acquisition is gigantic. Coach has built a roster with posiitional flexibility, balance and a squad of defenders. The little highlights I’ve seen and I can say with confidence that we’ve got some DOGS. Those boys are going to compete on both ends and make us proud to be Johnnies. Outside Shooting from the wings might be a slight concern but I love the fact that these guys are going to get to the rim, parade to the free throw line and shoot it from there at a high clip. Dingle and Jenkins are going to be dynamic, the clone-like wings Taylor and Luis can defend, slash, attract attention on drives around the rim and dish to joel for easy finishes at the bucket. We’ve got some good depth and roster composition that allow for scholarship distribution balance. I am far from an insider but I will say there is potential for a monster 2024 class. Coming off of a successful season this year we could really clean up on the recruiting trail.

Good times ahead my friends! Sorry for the long post. WE ARE ST JOHNS!

Try to make the lag time in between posts a little less next time. 😀

Welcome back Shaun. Definitely we represented ourselves well on the drinking front on that UCLA trip

Let me know when you want your shot Shaun, I can kick that other guy off whenever

Admittedly useless exercie but felt like comparing how this roster shapes up vs last year's roster heading into the season on a player vs player basis. Last year's roster on paper was thought to be the 5th-6th best team in the Big East and a borderline NCAA Tournament team. Just going at it based on this year's projected production for the current guys.

I know last year's team has left a bad taste in the mouths of many here, myself included but trying to be as generous as possible with last year's guys on an individual basis.

Jenkins vs Posh - Jenkins the better offensive player and Posh the better defensive player. Overall I think this one is a push.
Dingle vs Curbelo - Easily the biggest gap of any matchup. Dingle is 1000 miles better of a player both with what he can do on the court and how he changes the culture.
Davis vs King - Both limited minute guys, overall a push.
Alleyne vs Wusu - I personally was never a big Wusu fan. He wasn't much of shooter and was one of the worst finishers at the rim I've ever seen for a kid with his build and athleticism. Had good tools defensively but his fundamentals were off and never corrected. I have this one as a slight to moderate edge in favor of Alleyne due to his shooting and championship experience.
Taylor Jr vs Mathis - Pretty close one, both slashing type offensive players that can shoot a little bit but not much, Mathis' defense gives him the slight edge for me.
Luis vs Jones - Hard to gauge how good Jones could actually be if he had better coaching as the tools were there. Luis can have a similar jump that Jones did between his FR and SO years and should be way more in control than Jones ever was. In the sake of generosity I have it as a push for this year but obviously Luis long-term potential blows Jones away.
Dunlap vs Storr - Both ranked fairly similarly coming out of HS. Dunlap the more refined shooter, Storr the better athlete. I'll go push here.
Conway vs Pinzon - Both probably outmatched for this league, especially on the defensive end. I'll go small edge to Conway for experience.
Slazinski vs Stanley - Moderate to big edge to Slazinski due to his floor spacing capability that Stanley doesn't have.
Traore vs Traore and Soriano vs Soriano - Would be close to a push but both guys should take nice leaps this offseason under Pitino's development program.
TBD vs Nyiwe - Obviously the backup Center spot has yet to be filled but can't imagine whoever Pitino lands not being at least a moderate upgrade over Nyiwe
Pitino vs Anderson - About as big of a gap here as between Dingle vs Curbelo.

Overall I think on the player vs player basis that this year's team is generally close to last year's except for the Dingle vs Curbelo spot which should add multiple wins by itself. Futhermore, the overall construction of this roster is far better than last year's as this includes plenty of guys that can shoot and a ton more flexibility that last year's didn't have. Then factor in Pitino vs Anderson and it's not even close.

At the end of the day I think the meaty part of the bell curve for this upcoming team is 5thish in a stronger BE and around 8/9/10 seed in the NCAA Tournament, assuming they find a capable body to backup Soriano. That could be crushed if Dingle has the same immediate impact as Souley Boum did for Xavier and if guys Luis/Taylor etc take major jumps after one summer with Pitino.

Good stuff. If it’s the defensive side that you’ll stick to for Mathis over Taylor then I won’t change your mind. There is a very easy case to be made for Taylor being the superior offensive player. And I know you love your numbers.

Yep it's close there for sure. If Taylor was even a one 3 pointer made per game guy he'd be ahead but also a bit tough to handicap him going from being one of the main options on a terrible team to a secondary option on a good team.

There is no need to overthink this: Jenkins-Dingle-Alleyne will start 1-3 alongside Soriano.

I think the starter at the 4 will change depending on matchup but it’s likely Slazinsky most of the time with the current roster.

The only proven starter on an NCAA tournament caliber team is Alleyne and half our fans want him to come off the bench😂.

Feels sometimes like you and I are the only ones here steadfast on Alleyne starting lol

I really hate getting into the "who's starting" weeds as I think it's far more important who comes out of the huddle at the under 4 media TO in a close game than who starts but there's 5 wings on this team and I think one of them starts with Alleyne being first guy in off the bench. I think at least 2 of the 3 of the Jenkins-Dingle-Alleyne trio will be on the court at all times and easier to make that happen with one of them coming off the bench.

Nahiem makes complete sense as part of the closing lineup.
- He’s money from the line.
- He never turns it over.
- And he’s seen pretty much every situation at the highest level.

I just feel the way our roster is set up lends itself better to him being first guy off the bench.

Alleyne is miles ahead a Wusu in my opinion.
