Loved hearing Ron Darling's comments regarding the Mets playing at Annapolis and eating at their mess hall. Brought back memories when we played each year at West Point. After the game we had steak dinners in their mess hall. Just beautiful surroundings!
Jack, this really brought back memories. I remember my parents taking me to West Point in the late 1950's when I was 11 or 12 years old. We ate in Thayer Hall and it was an amazing experience. I had never been in a place like that. The waiters, the linen tablecloths, the decor, I still smile when I think about that day.
The funny thing is that at 72, I may not remember what I did 10 minutes ago, lol, but I remembered the name of the dining hall we ate in was Thayer Hall.
Panther, I can totally appreciate what you saw as a 6 year old. The ballroom we were at for the reception had traces of being majestic once. Instead there were those asphalt celotex ceiling tiles prople put up over peeling plaster ceilings in the 60s, and cheap yellowing plastic "chandeliers" also very old. The carpet was stained and worn, and the ceiling was stained yellow, probably from years when smoking inside was allowed.
I thought the place deserved to be a first class ball room to rival the Plaza considering their history of molding and creating some of the finest military minds in all of history. You can almost feel the ghosts of all the great generals who were trained there.and the state of the ballroom we were in (God I hope it was a lesser space and not the best they had) was an embarrassment.
