Razorback freshman guard Justice Hill has entered his name in the transfer portal and is leaving Arkansas basketball but is still exploring the possibility of playing football for the Razorbacks.
"Today, June 20, 2019, I entered my name in the transfer portal to assess other basketball opportunities that may be available to me. However, I hope to visit with the Razorback football staff here in the near future to evaluate potential football opportunities with my Hog family. I'm grateful for Coach Anderson and the staff for giving me the opportunity to be a Razorbacks, and I've enjoyed learning from Coach Musselman and the basketball staff here at Arkansas. I'm trusting in God, leaning not on my own understanding, knowing my path will be directed," Hill stated on Twitter.
I feel bad for the kid, all he's ever wanted to be is a Hog. Committed to coach Anderson for basketball in 9th grade, he was rated as a 4-star by future 150 at the time of his commitment, and was without a doubt the best player in state in the 2019 class. Fast forward, he started back playing football as well his junior year, excelled at that and pick-up several offers to play football and was voted the best offensive football player in the state. While also playing football, I believe that hurt his basketball stock, and he dropped in the rankings, but still was considered a solid 3-star player, he graduated early in order to join the basketball team in the Spring, it wasn't a scholarship available at the time, so he agreed to walk-on for that Spring semester and was told by coach Anderson's staff he'd get his scholarship in the fall.
Now it looks like the new staff isn't going to honor that scholarship promise coach Anderson made, which has been rumored for a few weeks now, but people around his camp had been denying it. Musselman likes bigger guards, and Justice doesn't fit that bill, and Musselman wants to add one or two more grad transfers. And also, the football coach really isn't trying to give him a scholarship either, as he's not at a position of need for them. It's a rough situation for him. IMO, this is a bad look for Musselman, Justice was a big part of recruiting some of the current Hogs when he committed early and he's an Arkansas kid that wants to be a Razorback. His dad is a former coach for the Razorbacks and even has a radio show in the state. IMO, that's burning unnecessary bridges, it's not like Justice is a scrub either looking for a hand out, he can really play, he was considered a big get at the time as he had schools like Georgetown, Texas, and UConn all recruiting him as well.
Based on the 2020 PG situation I don't really see a need for another small PG. But that all being said what I'm reading is he was never on scholarship, correct? So he should be able to leave and play immediately, no?
That's correct. And I agree he's not really a need. If they didn't already get McGriff, it would have been a great fit, I actually like Hill's potential and readiness more than McGriff's.
