2019 Transfers

Aside from the shooting %’s Rutherford’s stats as a sophomore at FAU are impressive. Not sure what his situation was last year but seems like he impacts the game in multiple ways and his size is a nice compliment to McGriff.

Maybe Rutherford can fill that Jamal Branch type role for this team? Not flashy but a steady presence who can bring the ball across the court, stay in front of his guy and knows when to defer to the scorers.

Sorry to be Debbie Downer, but if this is the best we can do at pg for 2019, it’s going to be a long season. Horrible stats at Monmouth. Jeez, this is all we can get? Excuses aside, new staff’s recruiting has failed to impress me to date. And no, I don’t count Heron and Figueroa as recruits of this staff merely bc they made the logical decision not to transfer or go pro.

You obviously don’t have enough insight into what the reality of being hired in April, and having to recruit out of necessity is. Slim pickings to say the least. If you are judging this staffs recruiting on that, you are not Debbie Downer, you have an agenda or just don’t get it. Just curious, who should they be going after at this late date and why should the identified player sign with SJU at this point in time? Stats notwithstanding and to repeat, Rutherford is an experienced, D1 point guard with some ability, especially on the defensive end. Anderson is trying to fill a roster, plugging holes in the dike, getting a moribund program up and running and has little to pick from.

Wasn't gonna reply once I saw your well put response Logen. But come on Boo of course you have to count heron and figgy as a result because of the staff. That's easy for you to say after the fact. Cant imagine how much more you would be hammering this staff had these guys opted elsewhere.

Thanks Logen and Eric
Such realistic and constructive and hopeful observations.
I for one am very pleased with:
Mike Cragg ( had a chance to chat recently )
Mike Anderson
The latter’s new staff
Our roster as is and
The last minute pickup of players available.
We are headed in the right ( and exciting ) direction.

BTW Mike Cragg rubbing elbows with Mike Krzyzewski for decades and Mike Anderson the same with Nolan Richardson - basketball excellence - excellence! - can only bode well. Did we ( finally ) really get such a talented basketball hierarchy in these past few months?
Wow.
Fortunate.
Go Storm.
All the best.

It’s really late in the game and we need capable bodies. I don’t have a problem with one or two year players at this point and focusing on recruiting 2020 and beyond as has been mentioned. We definitely need to focus on more HS kids as compared to when Mullin and Matt we’re here and I think we will.

No complaints about this staff and what there have done to date.
Think we will fine this yr, with good things to come

Totally unrealistic to believe that we hire a coach in April and we are going to get top flight commitments. This is the exact reason I hope anyone we hire works out and probably hold on too long trying to give them the opportunity to succeed.
Bottom line is yes, next year is going to be a pretty long season. However, I’ll hope that the new staff can coach them up a bit and they can lay the foundation for a real program that shows kids they are serious in building up a consistent winner again at St. John's. Yes, we have done this before and failed. Very frustrating but we need to put our faith in someone. Right now that is Coach MA and AD MC. I for one will support their efforts and hope for the best.

His stats were better at FAU. I think he picked the wrong style of play to xfer to at Monmouth. His defense is made for our nee style under Coach MA. The up tempo style will be more in line with his play

I mean, you can't recruit players that literally don't exist.

The market is extremely limited. The lack of PG options at this point are very well documented. I checked immediately eligible transfer bigs who are still available as well and the market is similarly scarce. There's Kerry Blackshear who is being recruited by the top programs in the country and that's pretty much it.

As many others have correctly pointed out, need to do the best we can (and likely be creative) to field a competitive roster this year while building foundation for the future. There are no shortcuts. I have no problem with us putting in the insulation and plumbing first, and then going out shopping for the master bathroom hot tub for a change.

...and then 'closing' on 'high-end' big pieces to protect the doors & skillfully-crafted chandeliers that can 'shoot the lights' out. Lol.

There is absolutely no down side to bringing in this kid from Monmouth as he is done after this year. I hope that he will play to his strengths which seem to be defense and passing and keep his shots to a minimum. I don’t expect much but we need another point guard and there can’t be much left to choose from.

Very curious to see the system and defense. Hopefully it attracts solid players going forward.

I have the same hope and key on your use of the word “solid”. It seems Anderson recruits to the way he wants to play as opposed to rankings and stars. Making Plays, please comment if I am reading him wrong. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t recruit talent but it is the type of talent he wants and can mold into team. That is great from my perspective.

I just don’t get all the unbridled optimism. The much maligned Matt A. had little difficulty scooping up solid players late in the game. Glad we’re filling out the roster, but that’s about all you can say we are doing from my point of view.

Really hope I’m way off. One poster suggested I have an agenda. My agenda is not to suffer another total rebuild. After more than 30 years as a diehard fan, I’m really sick of it. Sorry if I’m raining on the
parade.of optimism.

Who is optimistic? Realistic maybe, not optimistic. You want to criticize a coach who has been two months on the job, put a staff together and is trying to fill out a roster as best he can, so be it. The players Matt recruited in his first year were exactly the same level player that we are bringing in now, exactly. I was the one who mentioned the word agenda, and said it was either that or you don’t get it. I stand by that statement.

FWIW and to follow with my favorite spin 'probably not much' to keep it light, but Devale Johnson is tracking a host of St. John's fans and 'sites' on his twitter account.
Do not want to get ahead of my skis on this guy, but damn he looks good.
And wondering if Nick Rutherford commits on his visit, or if the Van Zyl pursuit still has legs.
Interesting days in Johnny-Land.

“The players Matt recruited in his first year were exactly the same level player that we are bringing in now, exactly.”

This right here is something that I think people need to look at. Matt wasn’t bringing big timers in from day 1. In addition to a lot of “wins” by Matt on the recruiting trail, there were plenty of average players as well. Staff needs more time to get rolling to see what they can do.
