2019 Transfers
Add Rutherford and perhaps an interior Juco they may be looking at and shut it down to focus on crucial 2020 class. With the loss after 19-20 of Heron, Figgy and Rutherford if landed, this will be a crucial recruiting season for Johnnies.
Any names you're hearing they are looking at? I seen one JUCO kid that was still available that was like 6'7 that they said St. John had inquired about.

Also, someone on twitter was saying it's a kid (forgot his name) from Western Kentucky that Demeo use to coach that staff may have interest in, you heard any traction on that?

Edit:
This is the kid I was talking about.

Yes

Thanks for the article, Paultz.
This is a big comedown from dream-hopes of a Thornton or Van Zyl.
It's called 'reality' and it's fine this late in the process.
The kid may be a nice piece to fit into CMA's system and feed Heron, Figgy, Wright, Steere, Williams, Roberts, Sears and get everybody involved.
Nick seems to be a prototypical PG and a good defender.
Not sure who else the Staff is looking at for the PG spot, but if he's the guy, I say welcome to the team, Nick!
And hope it's not being greedy to hope to land 1 solid Juco big.

Zach B
Monmouth PG Nick Rutherford, currenly on a visit to St. John's, was described to me as someone who can run a team and defend. Won't blow you away with skill-set. But they need the experience at the position. #sjubb

Check out 19 recruiting section for Juco forward on campus today.

Right, over-lapped with my post.
This is the guy Moose first mentioned a week+ ago.
Honorable Mention Top 100 Juco.
Nice stats.
Would luv to get both these guys.
Both nice 'pieces'.

It’s a good situation for the grad PG. Just a gut feeling but I bet we land both. The wing is a Brooklyn kid too so I can see how he might want to come home for his last year or two. I’d have liked one more big guy but at least we will have depth and neither will take up much roster space for long.

Van Zyl is intriguing but I think Rutheford and Thornton would give us about the same despite Thornton being a much higher rated recruit initially and Rutheford might give us a little more intangibles like chemistry and heart.

Just got back from my youngest one's high school graduation and signed on for the first time today. Looks like good things may be happening this weekend. Rutherford would fill the one gaping hole - an experienced point guard. Really hope he enjoys his visit and signs on to what should be a very fun ride this year!

That's what I was thinking as well.

Well these wouldn't be long term commitments. The juco guy sounds interesting

Regarding Devale Johnson.......

The 6'7 forward was an important piece for a Williston State team that went 22-11 and made it to the National Tournament. Johnson plays with motor, has a great frame, super long arms, and can guard multiple positions. This season, he averaged 13.4 ppg, 8.9 rpg, and 1.8 bpg while shooting 53.7% from the field and 43.3% from 3.

Seemed like a player at FAU:

BEFORE MONMOUTH: Rutherford spent the past two seasons at Florida Atlantic, starting all 63 games he played in over two seasons at guard. He netted nine points per contest as a sophomore, third highest on the team, while leading the Owls in assists with 129 and steals with 39. Rutherford also played more minutes than anyone on the team, and was the third highest rebounder despite playing point guard. As a freshman, he netted 7.2 points per contest and led FAU with 117 assists while his 49 steals topped the team. Rutherford’s 49 steals in 2015-16 were the most for an Owl in 11 seasons dating back to the 2004-05 campaign. Rutherford also succeeded in the classroom at Florida Atlantic, earning Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll both years he spent in Boca Raton.

Devale's stats are impressive no matter what but excellent against 23 mpg played.
He shot 65% from 2 pt range, 43% from 3, had 8 TRBs/g and hauled in 7 DRBs/g, with 1.8 blocks/game.
Hadn't realized Williston State made it to the Juco Tournament.
Looks like Ol' Miss and St. Joe's may be our primary competition.
Hope Devale wants to come home...

Chicago, you didn't realize Williston State made the JUCO tournament? :eek:hmy: Thee Williston St.? I was acutely aware of all 64 teams that made the JUCO tournament! B)

Adonis DelaRosa played there for additional good karma or not. :)

Very very slim pickings this time of year and we still only have a freshman pg who will have the ball in his hands 40 minutes per game as things stand. As we all should know you cant put all of your eggs in a single basket. A second pg is an absolute must. While not super sexy an experienced nice size player like Rutherford would be a very solid pick up for one season and would have zero impact on the recruitment of Curbalho and others. As for the jc forward that is absolutely a no brainer IMHo. Size , motor, good stats, depth, experience, covers a few positions. Once it was clear that Precious was not coming this kid fills a hole for 2 seasons. Sounds like a much improved Keita. Let’s finish recruiting for next season and focus 100% on the class of 2020 knowing that we won’t need to bring in 5 players. Stability is long overdue.

Nice post, RMN.
Agree 100%.
Let's lock down the roster and let CMA go to work.

Agree on both. One thing I hope, and I know some disagree, but I hope Anderson and co. recruit “their” players and forget about the “one and done” players. They are not coming here and IMO it is a waste of time and resources recruiting them. Achiwua (sp.) was never coming to SJU and obviously we had a connection. Ditto with RJ Barrett. Build from the ground up, develop a program with some identification and continuity and see where it takes you. You can’t go from the bottom to the top overnight.

I share your sentiments about top 10 talent but I am not sure everyone else does. Fortunately or unfortunately we have been around a little longer and understand that it takes time to build a relationship with top recruits. Mullin had a 10 year relationship with Louie prior to committing to SJU.
No recruit believes we will be a top 15 team any time in the near future so no point in recruiting top 10 talent as we can’t offer what they want. However, if CMA can start to win, which I fully believe he will, we will be able to recruit top 50 talent like Ponds on a consistent basis. Not once every 4 years. Mullin was able to recruit high level juco talent in Ahmed, LJ and the player not to be named who flew the coop to Nebraska so no reason to believe CMA cannot recruit the highest level of juco talent as he has done at previous programs. If CMA can get some top 50 players , high level jucos and 3 star players who remain and develop there is no reason for him not to consistently win 20 per season and flirt with the top 25.
I think that will be his recruiting strategy and I believe it will work.
