2019 Coaching Changes

I don't know why anyone would want that UCLA job. Their fans and admin are probably worse than us in terms of expectations. I look at Steve Alford. In 4 of his 5 full seasons he won over 20 games, went to 4 NCAAs and like 3 sweet sixteens, and was fired half way through the season. I'd shit my pants if we had that success.
You really comparing our fans expectations to UCLA?? SJU fans just expect to make it into top half of the league yearly, with the hope that some day we relatively consistently make the ncaa tourney. I don’t think that’s lofty nor compares in any way to UCLA fans expectations. Once more, UCLA has a heyday of a bunch of national titles. Our heyday is count-em ONE Final 4... something Tariq Owens already attained yesterday.
No. I'm saying that UCLA runs off coaches that are successful. Coaches that would be a god here if they had similar success. I guess the way I worded it with the fans and admin line could be misconstrued, cuz my point was that I would be happier than a pig in shit to have the success here that their coaches have.

Chris was brought here to compete with Villanova for championships not replicate Seton Hall. Period.

That is why he was given resources that Lavin and Roberts were not given. The Slice contract alone was something SJU would not commit to under any other coach. That was the whole point. To get from B to A. Instead we have gone from B to C. It has nothing to do with patience.

If you are going to make an argument over treating a coach poorly then you should be making an argument against firing Lavin in the first place. Again if you are going to argue with patience and treating Chris "fairly" which is ridiculous in my mind anyway, then you should be the first to say under the same standard in retrospect SJU should not have fired Lavin. Period.

This is completely blowing my mind. So he never spoke to Cam (before or after), Sidney, Femi, or Heron??? I'm going to assume this is the norm rather than the exception.

Seriously, can somebody explain this? Is Chris paranoid about the FBI investigation or something and doesn't want to contact recruits? That wouldn't really make sense, though, since he never reached out to Cam (and Sidney?) even after he committed.

This is the most bizarre behavior imaginable for a head coach. Other than physically showing up to games and maybe some practices, I don't understand what he does. Now it appears he is trying to get an undeserved extension. Mike does overreact/exaggerate at times, but he may be right about Mullin holding the program hostage. DO NOT EXTEND HIM!

They should not have fired Lavin when they did. You could make the case that he should have been gone, but I would have done it either a year before (when the new coach would have had a lot of seniors to work with in year one, plus be given a year to recruit), or he should have been allowed to stay one more season, to try and clean up the mess. If you fired him after that year, there probably would have been a core of decent players for the new coach to work around.

Making the cupboard bare for Mullin (or whoever the new coach was going to be) was a mistake, IMO. That's not a second guess. I felt that way at the time.

You are making a reasonable point here and while I personally think more highly of Mullin then Lavin, many praised Lavin for rebuffing Tiny Morton and losing Whitehead which is what likely saved Willard’s job and perhaps cost Lavin’s his.

Heron has mutliple quotes in this aricle that dispute this "fact."

It's made up - as is A LOT of what is being posted right now. And for the record, if my opinion mattered, I am anti-extension.

Yeah lets remember we did recruit Heron out of HS as well. Granted he was Slice recruit out of HS due to father's connection to Slice.

That being said I'm the first to point out for a fact the other examples of recruits and Mullin not around.

I will say however I don't know if the connection between Mullin and Heron is as strong anymore. Been hearing that since February.

My understanding is that Mullin didn't have an interaction with Heron from when he pulled out of the draft to when he decided to transfer to St. John's. Believe he was already decided/heavy lean before taking the campus visit. Maybe there was a relationship from the initial recruitment out of HS. But I could obviously be wrong.

BTW-Mullin was not on campus for visit by Sid Wilson before he committed and signed with SJU. That is a fact.

Now obviously Wilson never ultimately played for SJU as we know. But again same thing.

That statement doesn't prove anything. That is a one off statement where he mentions the HC that he is about to play for. He would say that if he had a million conversations or 1. I can't speak to before but I am just saying that means nothing.

But here is what I can tell you, there has been no communication with Heron's family and coach since season's end.

Again if you are going to argue with patience and treating Chris "fairly" which is ridiculous in my mind anyway, then you should be the first to say under the same standard in retrospect SJU should not have fired Lavin. Period.
You are making a reasonable point here and while I personally think more highly of Mullin then Lavin, many praised Lavin for rebuffing Tiny Morton and losing Whitehead which is what likely saved Willard’s job and perhaps cost Lavin’s his.
I was one of those who thought Lavin did the right thing, at the time. Clearly, he did not, but because I supported that at the time, I don't hold Lavin's feet to the fire re: that. I just file it under "never make that kind of mistake again."

Of course , in the Post Season the Critics outnumber the fans . Whether here at this Site or, at other Programs . A lot of things get twisted by those who are Twisters . It’s a lot like politics today , regardless of which Party is your preference . But , I digress .., Some here wondering why UCLA runs through Coaches like a bad movie that only gets through its first week showing , never to be heard from again . Anyway , UCLA fans , like may of the Blue Bloods or , more accurately former Blue Bloods , has unreasonable expectations . Their fans want the reincarnation of John Wooden and he isn’t available . Indiana has gone through a merry go round since Bobby Knight and Archie Miller is likely 1 or 2 seasons away from joining Mike Davis , Kelvin Sampson , Tom Crean elsewhere than Bloomington . Calipari ? Despite a philosophy that churns faster than a NBA Roster , he’s not winning as many Championships as the Wildcat faithful demand . He could soon leave if the Banners don’t return . Duke ? How could they lose this year and not be in tonight’s game ? Must be Coach K made a mistake somewhere ? Chris Beard ? Sure he caught lightning in a bottle this season and is the new darling of this Site and others but , he’s a middle aged Coach , with not a lot on his resume besides Ark -LRock and TT . What happens , if he leaves , goes to UCLA or , somewhere else , and loses ? Think they keep him ? Not likely . He could follow the likes of Ben Howlsnd , Steve Lavin and Steve Alford right out the door . How about Jamie Dixon , could not continue winning at Pitt in the ACC and leaves for TCU and leaves the Panthers a mess . Yet , gets a nod from UCLA and can’t work a deal . In the BE , many on this site near deify Willard at SH , yet he had a losing record like Mullin for 4 years there until the Whitehead , Delgado years . Posters here crucify Mullin but , few comment on how SH should have been the 8-10 team and 7 th place finisher , all on a bad call against us . Otherwise Mullins team is 9-9 in theBE . And, 3rd place is ours . Mart A leaving ? A catastrophe ? Hardly .. He did a good job recruiting Transfers , period the end. Who were his best ? Simon , Clark and Figgy . Doubt he had much to do withHeron . Let’s see how he does at Nebraska ? Think Hoiberg will let him run a practice or coach free throws ? Matt , while valuable , was a 1 trick Pony and his role won’t change . He’ll get Hoiberg a few transfers and maybe make them respectable in the BiG 10 for a season or 2 but , they aren’t going into the top tier of that league , ever ! And , how come the Critics don’t mention the free pass that was universally awarded Mullin in his first season with the empty cupboard that Lavin left ? How they have forgotten . Everyone touted the talent on this Season’s team as if it were Superior to every other BE team . Here’s a clue . It wasn’t any more talented ! BE Coaches only predicted a 4 or 5 th place standing in the pre season poll . Pretty accurate , if you factor in the SH game . I often wonder how many of the Team’s Critics are Alums ? And , if so , how many write a check each year to the School ? Lastly , it’s totally unfair to assess Chris Mullin with the 20 year Doldrums of this Program . That’s a complete different issue . Largely attributable to the Administrstion , before President Gempesaw .
Heron was 100% Matt A. Mullin never even talked to him before committing.

Matt A had Femi lined up and Mullin couldn't be bothered to meet him and close the deal.

You should give Matt A and Greg credit for the 20 wins, since they did the recruiting and coaching.

Yes, Williard was on the rocks, but him and his staff brought in talent. We're leaking talent (Ponds and Mack). We currently do not have a single PG for next season.

Lavin's five years including his last 2 were infinitely better than the current 4 year stretch. And again I am not a Lavin fan and I had no problem with him being fired. But how can you argue patience and then justify firing a guy who already accomplished more than the current guy. That is complete hypocrisy.

Again if you are going to argue with patience and treating Chris "fairly" which is ridiculous in my mind anyway, then you should be the first to say under the same standard in retrospect SJU should not have fired Lavin. Period.
. Hmm, I get you are a Lavin supporter despite the denial . But , a few points . First , did you ever see Mullin play , here , in the Olympics or NBA ? He was possibly among the most savvy of players, with little of the Athleticism if Michael Jordan . And, I’m not comparing him to MJ but , in many games the Bulls vs Warriors , Scottie Pippen could not guard Mullin from scoring 40 and nether could MJ . Of course , Mullin could not guard MJ either , who went for 44. But , I digress . As for Coaching , I do give Chris more leeway than Steve as he is the Best Player in the School ‘s history . And , he was left a almost Division 3 Roster by Lavin , in his first year . Year 1 is not Mullins fault . Most fans here gave Lavin a pass for the Season that Dunlop Coached when Steve has Cancer . That team was the freshman year of DLO, HRkless , etc and they lost more than they won . So , I support giving Mullin the duration of his contract , if he wants to continue , as was done with Roberts and Lavin . Remember too , Mullin did not solicit this job , the University called on its’ favorite Son to come here and help us back to some prominence . I think he’s done ok with the Players he has had . This was not a team of Superstars , except Ponds and if not for a bad call vs SH , we finish 9-9 and 3 Rd place in BE ... A improvement from past Years for sure . And , a NCAA bid regardless of where we were positioned . And , think about this for a minute . Did Marquette have a good , if not great season ? Yet , they lost 6 of 7 to close the Season and if you read their Board , Wojo is part of the reason ..They haven’t been too complimentary this off season , much like many here . So , Mullin deserves a little more time , in my opinion which is just as important as any who feel differently .

Heron has mutliple quotes in this aricle that dispute this "fact."

It's made up - as is A LOT of what is being posted right now. And for the record, if my opinion mattered, I am anti-extension.
In case people don't want to read the entire article -

"Heron also cited a relationship with Mullin and assistant coach Matt Abdelmassih in helping with his decision making process."

BTW-Mullin was not on campus for visit by Sid Wilson before he committed and signed with SJU. That is a fact.

Now obviously Wilson never ultimately played for SJU as we know. But again same thing.
. It should be regarded as a Blessing that Sid Wilson opted out and went to UCONN . He’s been nothing but , a problem to Hurley .,losing him to the Huskies was a good thing !

It’s unwise to accept anything you read here as gospel. I have said for years that rumors become fact around here too easily.

I don’t know what happened with Femi, but I know the only person that leaked info was Matt and only did so for his personal gain. St. Jean doesn’t talk to anyone. Mitch doesn’t talk to anyone. Mullin only talks to a select few.

I would rate Mullin at about a 6 so far. His staff was awful and that includes Matt. His effort was also seemingly lacking. Whether that is true or not is almost irrelevant — the mere perception of being lazy is fatal to A StZ John’s Coach.

Let me be clear on this: Matt A SUCKED. He knows less about basketball than any coach in the country. He wonders around the sidelines at game and in timeouts as clueless as some of us would be in a quantum physics discussion. His talent evaluation is awful.

I believe his ineptitude in anything that involved basketball knowledge (plus his territorial attitude to other coaches recruiting) created the awful structure we had. He’s like a blind man on a construction site...all he can do is answer the phone. So Mullin let him answer the phone and that led others to concentrate on one or two areas.

I was excited for the Hurley rumor. He’s a college guy through a s through. He understands the importance of having 3-4 ball handlers. He still has Remy Martin and this year he adds a 4* PG and a nasty Hatten-like PG/Combo from JUCO who would eat Cam Mack alive. And he stresses rebounding. That’s all I ask for: ball-handling and rebounding.

Yeah but instead of holding a ship for him we could have used it more wisely if Wilson saw Mullin and vice versa.

As much as you bash Matt, where would we be without him ? WE would not have had a roster. People keep saying all he did was play the transfer game. What game was the balance of the staff playing?

I am a huge advocate of the transfer game. I think we need to rely on it to be successful. We just need better talent evaluation. Three of Texas Tech’s six leading scorers are transfers.

I am confident we would have been better off if Matt never came here and we had Slice and a less territorial recruiter.

Mullin doesn’t get a pass from me on not vetting some of Matt’s questionable additions. Zach Brown? How do you let Keita and Dixon take up a roster spot? Ellison? Yakwe? Yakwe’s teammate who was clearly not a d-1 talent? RF? Not backup PG for two years? No capable PF or center last year?

Barnes has never really done it for me. I think Kruger could win a national championship with SoCal kids.
Not a sexy choice but Barnes has missed just 4 NCAA tourneys in the last 25 years at 4 schools getting out of the first weekend 7 times.
