Anyone else not impressed so far? Don't get me wrong, I want to have a good OOC record but no one will watch the St. Francis, Sacred Heart, etc. games. Cal? Come on...I'd rather play a few major programs that get eyeballs. Why can't we get a Texas or Michigan...or Gonzaga? Florida State? At least those programs matter and they're familiar brands. I just feel like we schedule too many cupcakes and the pressure is on us not to lose instead of to win. Remember, the Big East is way weaker next year.
Never made sense to me especially at the MSG Holiday Festival scheduling garbage opponents year after year. Imagine St. John's vs. Gonzaga MSG Holiday Festival instead. Seeing the schedule thus far (pretty easy OOC) plus a much weaker Big East...if Ponds stays and we somehow get a mystery big and assistant coach, there's no reason we shouldn't finish top 5 at worst. Sounds like Ponds is leaning towards leaving though...he wants to move his family out and cash in instantly. Delayed gratification is just not a virtue anymore. He clearly needs one more year to be a 1st rounder, but kids get blinded by the money even if it's not the best they can get.
You know we have to go to Duke next year right? Not including we have to play the Big Ten as well.
Joe3's post is pretty ludicrous given that 4 of the only 7 announced games are against high majors/upper mid majors, if not necessarily world beaters. Three cupcake games so far, including the on campus Tourney game. Memo to Joe. There will be more cupcakes. There may also be more high majors. There's 6 gamest still to be announced, however there's no reason for any team to play 10 OOC games against top 25 teams.
FWIW right now the schedule includes: Duke, Ga Tech, and 2 of Cal/VCU/Temple. Those Legend Classic games are part of a tourney. I am sure it's not hard to understand why St. Johns is not a target participant for some of the bigger tourneys right now. And the Holiday Fest, now that it's one game during finals week, is attractive to exactly 0% of good teams. MSG offers the top teams a lot of other options to play there at better times in better tourneys.
However, re SJU Grad 13's response, I think I read that STJ may be one of the two teams not participating in the Gavitt Games vs. the B1G this year. Creighton, Depaul, Providence and St Johns are the 4 teams who have participated every year so far so it will almost certainly be two of those, but I thought I read that it's pretty certain to be this year.
