2017 Transfers

From a general perusal of his stats he seems to be a perimeter player without much of a perimeter game.

Was it the 6 rebounds in 23 minutes a game that told you that? Or the 12 threes he took all year?

What does his rebounding # have to do with his projected position in the NBA? Shamorie averaged 4.4 rpg while Yakwe averaged 3 rpg. Does that make Ponds a forward and Yakwe a guard?

I'm confused, 1, can we or can we not project where a player plays on the court based on their stats? 2, who said anything about nba? 3, the only reason I brought it up in first place was because after a "general perusal of his stats" I had the exact opposite thought as you: that this guy knows his role and plays on the interior. Good rebounding numbers, low field goal attempts and a shooting % upwards of 50%.

Answer to #1 is obviously not but if you read the same article he is transferring because he is not satisfied playing his "role" on the "inside" and sees "himself" as a perimeter player on the next level.
#2, he said NBA if you dig deeper, #3, because D'Harrison was a great rebounding guard did not make him a forward.

So, my question to you is this: If Cheatham’s effectiveness on the wing was limited by his shooting range and turnover rate, the latter being worst on the team last season at 3.3 per 40 minutes, and he sees himself as a shooting wing, regardless of the the of 3's he took, do you think we need another Amar Alibegovic just because he rebounds? Do you think it is worth burning a ship waiting for his final year of eligibility to see if it will work out?
My opinion is F NO!
While Calipari flies into town and steals every major recruit we are still chasing big fat QUESTIONMARKS.???????

FWIW Diakite will be coming in the same time about the same size with little perimeter game yet which might be a good reason for him to do the early redshirt option that was discussed for him. But of course 72 doesn't believe that Mullin can develop players anyway...

so I'd not be a great proponent of getting this transfer when I'd much prefer to see a banger which hasn't surfaced yet for either this coming season or the following. But to be fair he only took 12 threes all season and otherwise shot over 52% FG And using the Alibegovic example not great since if he had spent more time rebounding than parking on the perimeter he'd have been more valuable to the team and his numbers are nowhere near as good as Cheatham.

Fordham grad transfer Antwoine Anderson tells me that he has committed to UConn. Immediately eligible for next season. Averaged 11.1 PPG.

Can somebody more in the know than me please explain why Williams is transferring? By all accounts he had a good relationship with the staff, particularly with Matt. We have plenty of PT to offer for a big man and Williams appears to be as good or better than anybody else we are going after. Even if we found another big, there would still be room for him to get PT. I can't imagine he wil get more PT at UConn, which obviosulybisbright around the corner from SJU. This is a real head scratcher for me."

Williams seemed to love SJU. I ask myself the same question. Unless we replace him w better player. which the JUCO kid isn't, It does seem like a head scratcher. Just like the loss of Jones last year.. That said, still need to give it time the see how things pan out. Maybe Matt has a rabbit up his sleeve.

I have to laugh about all the tears being shed about D Williams leaving. When Sima left, I asked on this Forum if D Will could pick up some of the minutes and was basically told no chance. Kid was always hurt, he can't play, etc. I had no clue as he didn't play much until that point. Kid plays well after Sima leaves and now we just lost the missing piece! Oh well. We need to move on as he is gone. He was ok and gave us some good minutes. Unfortunately, either he chose to leave (which I hope is the case...emphasis on chose) or he was pushed by staff. I don't know that answer.

No matter the case, our staffs either knew or wanted better and they must address the area somehow. I think it is very important this gets done or we will struggle for another season.

I am 100% pro Mullin and Matt. That said, calling a spade a spade, I am not impressed with the post season recruiting outcomes (so far).

It seems to me that Amar and DWill are better than any other two recruits we are mentioned with (that I know of).

Maybe the staff feels that Kante can replicate the 3.8 ppg and 2.6 rpg and do all the other assorted little things without having to sit in an ice bath afterward?

At St. John's we specialize in "mystery" recruits. Sometimes they take the form of 7 footers who wear makeup and rob convenience stores. Sometimes they are players not satisfied with their current situation and Matt performs his dog and Johnny show and we get an injured Darien Williams or a bull in a china shop Bashir Ahmed. We are now on the verge of a recruiting battle for a 7 foot + behemoth with national power USF. Recruiting sure got easier once we got rid of Slice, even though we continue to pay him and it is sure easier than having that lazy good for nothing Lavin. ;)

I'll be convinced Matt, Mullin and Richmond can attract prime steak instead of pork chops when they have even a slim chance of convincing one of the top 5 undecided 5 stars to consider St. John's. I agree that into our second full recruiting cycle we seem to be chasing 2 stars out of desperation while the top prospects are signing elsewhere.

If this year's mystery recruit is a 5th year big with even mid major talent I will nonetheless be satisfied.

Closing the deal with Ponds, Simon, Clark and re-selling Lovett twice, was much harder than this year's job of selling a quality big man to play with those guys!

TIRED OF HEARING ABOUT Jones he was at best an average player All the talk going around for a good while now saying we need sone decent in the post,I agree But I feel my now we should have been already able to sign one by now

Per Evan Daniels: "Rice transfer Marcus Evans is headed to VCU, per sources. Big time pickup for Mike Rhoades. Put up huge numbers for him at Rice".

A breath of fresh air - Not a transfer story

Per Trey Mines: 6''7" forward Antwan Walker made it official that he will stay w/the Hoyas after meeting with HC Pat Ewing this morning on the Hill
Nice to see a kid decide stay at a school rather than bolt like almost 1,000 others have done

Kansas and Illinois have emerged as the two likeliest landing spots for Cal transfer Charlie Moore, per multiple sources.

Per Borzello: Visit schedule for Nebraska transfer Ed Morrow

This weekend - Marquette
Next weekend - Iowa State
1st weekend in May - Pitt

Doesn't look like we are on his radar
Too bad - this kid is a good player

Duke grad transfer Sean Obi tells me he has cut his list to Maryland and Georgetown. Will make a decision soon. Immediately eligible.

Per Rothstein
Kansas transfer Carlton Bragg tells me his top five are Xavier, Arizona State, Illinois, Cincinnati and NC State. Will set visits soon.

With all the playing time and exposure we have to offer. Bragg and Obi not even a visit SJU is at the bottom of the barrel. That speaks volumes.
