2017-2018 Season

With the addition of Clark and Wilson. Don't need Amar hoisting 3s. I think he's going to have to figure that out or he will get a lot of time to cheer from the bench. He's the biggest guy on the team, mass wise ,and is a sr.

Amar's response to playing inside :)

I hope Ali B uses his size to get down low, create some space and get some boards. If he does that there should be plenty of minutes for him He hasn't done it in 3 years so doubt he will in year 4

Don't expect to see this. I stood next to him two weeks ago. He gives 100%, is enthusiastic, but he's not a banger. Really like the guy and hope he has a senior season he deserves by contributing here and there and playing his last game in the NCAA.
What did you expect him to do, cross body block you when you were standing next to him? ;) :)

No, that would have surprised me. I could see it in a game though.

Interesting that all the top rebounders in the league returning are upper classmen and only a handful from last season were fr/soph. Speaks to an area of maturity I think. Both physical and skills. Also a good indicator that our youth had some natural shortcomings and we can expect seeing improvement in this area that most of us feel was lacking.

He stands to make more money somewhere in the world by being a rebounder than he does by being a guy who shoots 28 percent from three.

Maybe a teammate or someone on the staff should be in his ear everyday, and piss him off about being to soft to being a man and rebounding. Sometimes motivation to shut others the hell up does wonders.
Maybe someone could take credit for turning Ali into a freaking rebounding beast, but on a serious note I SERIOUSLY DOUBT IT.

I would be very surprised if the staff has not done that one more than one occasion. While our roster may not be perfect the staff is anything but stupid.
Unfortunately today's kids do what they want to do as opposed to what they need to do , what is truly required of them or what is necessary for them to succeed. Amar is unfortunately a typical young adult and is missing out on pt at SJU by being the player he wants to be as opposed to the player the team requires. I too hope he has an epiphany or sees the light or whatever you want to call it but I am not optimistic. He certainly can board which we have seen on occasion and it would be wonderful if he would commit himself to accepting that role his senior season. Lord knows we would be a better team for it.

Excuse me, but wth is the coach, Mullin or Ali.
Mullin should tell him: "We aren't asking to reboundiing, if you want to here then you better rebound, if you're by the 3-pnt line then you won't play a minute here.

It's quite possible that Ali would get the message then. If he don't then he might as well just leave.

No doubt an overall increase in talent level and maturity is going to serve this team well. But a little more size wouldn't have hurt. ;)

I don't even need to see him be a banger. Maybe just a back to basket turnaround jumper, euro-style. Hang around the basket more. We shall see, but keeping a guy around his size does really help for depth.

leave.

I know Chris Mullin isn't the most eloquent speaker in the world, but come on.

During a televised time out during some game last year Mullin asked "where's ali? where's ali? " and when he located him said quite clearly "stay out of the middle." It wass the first thing he said during the time out and I heard it with my own ears. Presumably he wants what ever lummox that's covering AA away from the basket to clear space on the interior. In any event, if you think Alibegovicth is standing out by the three point line of his own volition, that's crazy. The scenario in which "he won't play a minute" is if he just decided of his own accord and contrary to the coach's game plan that he should hang around the corner waiting for someone to throw him the ball so he could hoist up a three. That's not to excuse his poor rebounding, with his size he could certainly be an effective weak side rebounder. But banging in the middle has not been his job, that's why he hasn't been banging in the middle. It's not some capricious real time decision made by a guy who's barely a walkon.

Ali is a very good 12th man. He is enthusiastic, seems like a real good teammate and once in awhile out of nowhere plays a good game. He was forced to play bigger minutes due to poor roster management and defections. Blame Lavin and Mullin not him. You are asking a 12th man to be something he is not. Better chance of asking Lovett or Ponds to be 6-5. If anyone thinks any success this year is directly correlated to how well Alibegovich rebounds or plays then we are fu--ed.
This fan base spends way too much time worrying about end of bench guys. Not every player is a rotation guy and usually good teams only play 8 or 9 guys.

I'm hoping Yakwe works hard during the offseason to get on the list of rebounders. I hope he has been growing not just in height but maturity.

after last season we are not sure what to expect but a good season from him would be huge

Players have to play as a team. We will be asking Clark to play the 4 instead of the 3, Harkless played the 5 as a freshman. I dont know what is so hard for Amar to play more inside and take more 2s than 3s, especially when he wasnt that good of a 3 point shooter and it would result in more PT for him.

My Big East prediction as of today: Nova, Seton Hall, Xavier, Providence, Creighton, St. John's, Butler, Marquette, DePaul, Georgetown.

Which puts us on bubble which is what most expect. Well outside of those who will predict 25 wins then complain if we win 18.
