Fwiw, Jon Rothstein's "Bold Prediction"
"St. John’s will finish fifth in the Big East: The Red Storm won 14 games last season with a nucleus of players that were in their first year of college basketball. Many of those players will return for Chris Mullin’s third campaign in Jamaica. Sophomores Marcus Lovett and Shamorie Ponds give St. John’s arguably the best backcourt in the Big East while Bashir Ahmed and Tariq Owens are two returning starters who should be much more productive in their second full seasons as regular contributors in college basketball. Add two high-profile transfers in Justin Simon (Arizona) and Marvin Clark (Michigan State) and you have an interesting mix that needs to become significantly more consistent than it was last season, when it lost games to Delaware State, LIU-Brooklyn, and Old Dominion.
The Big East has four clear-cut top teams — Villanova, Xavier, Seton Hall, and Providence — but after that things get more cluttered. Georgetown and DePaul are both in a rebuilding phase, leaving St. John’s, Marquette, Creighton, and Butler in position to battle for spots five through eight in the conference standings. Mullin has the firepower and depth to make a statement at his alma mater. He has a roster that should enable SJU to finish in the top half of the Big East."
