2017-2018 Season

Not sure why JW's motivations should be questioned. He doesn't need to tamper expectations against us, and there have always been coaches who have been pretty favorable to us in the media etc. (Pitino comes to mind). Jay is obviously a great judge of talent, and I think he just sees a very talented (but not deep) group that could make some noise. Let's take the kudos and hope it pans out.

If we only get 15.3 ppg, 7.8 rpg, and 2 apg combined from Simon and Clark as SI projects that's unlikely a good sign. Even checking expectations, and acknowledging their biggest collective impact may come on defensive end, I think that's light.

With respect to Simon in particular it's been a while since we had a guard with his combination of size, athleticism, and skill. Think he's going to create for others, but also think he may be the primary beneficiary of the attention Ponds and Lovett draw. Lot of easy baskets out there for someone with his slashing/finishing ability if he doesn't receive appropriate attention.

Know this is not the decathlon, but feedback from staff is that Simon is best athlete on the team. I suspect your comment re easy baskets, finishing ability will be spot on.

I'm putting Simon down for 12 ppg and Clark 7 ppg

St. John's will face Rutgers in a charity exhibition on 11/5, per a source. Official release coming out today. #SJUBB

It would be nice if they had a charity game every year.

last year our defense was charity almost every game

With respect to Jay Wright comments during podcast, he singled out SJU as a team to watch out for in the league so it's not like he was over-hyping all the competition. I take that as good sign.

Bought a brand new St. John’s hat at Marshall’s for $7.99. Paid at least $25 at Carnesecca for the same one for my son. Wonder how it got there?

I am very excited about the improvement of St John’s junior Tariq Owens. Could be a major factor for the Red Storm. #SJUBB

"Could be" ?
He has to be. If he doesn't play well, we're almost certainly dead in the water.

Tariq seems like he has solid support around him and is willing to work hard

His dad definitely works him hard, while at the same time being a completely reasonable and realistic guy who takes the long view.

I'm really happy to have both son and dad associated with the program.

Think marillac might need a minute alone after this..

Bryan Trimble on expectations heading into freshman season:

“I just expect to win and whatever it takes to get there. Whatever I have to do in order for us to win, I’ll do it. If it’s to defend for a few minutes or to knock down some shots, I’m willing to do it. I also like to pride myself on being able to rebound the basketball as a guard. If I have the body, I might as well use it.”

Paging Amar Alibegovi.

Amar Alibegovic......please report to the lower portion of the paint. Thank you.

When I spoke very briefly with Amar at the BE Media Day (he recognized me from talking with him & his mom at the Herald Square subway station a few months ago; really nice kid), I tapped him on the chest and said, "We need you to hit the boards." He smiled and said, "I know." Hope he lives up to it.

I remember your original post about meeting him. I have a soft spot for Amar. Not surprised to hear he's a good kid.

The anti-Lavar Ball.

So Justin Simon is our main point guard this year according to Zach.

It would make sense since he can’t shoot. No need to clog up the lane anymore.
