2017-18 Transfers

I know we heard that he's not healthy yet. I'm hoping what we're hearing is wrong.
From staf feedback, little is expected of him. Secondly he would have been guy nudged out if they needed roster spot. Lastly, he is raw, rail thin & a small forward. Take a look at the guys sitting out this year and it easy to see PT will be tough to get for him.
Paultz,

Thanks for the response. It does seem to be a key decision the staff is making this off-season by sticking with him. I am thinking they prefer him for the long term over the remaining one year transfers or the ones that are coming out late. I am hoping we see him make it on the court - even if it takes till January when the real games start. He should be a key player down the road.
I don’t read it that way. I think if we can get a grad transfer big, he would be gone. Sadly, we did not:(
Wishful thinking on my part.

He was a starter at UMass, he's not coming here to share minutes or be a back-up.
He'd be a starter here too. But refusing to be part of sharing 80 minutes among three guys, especially if the starting PF would also get some SF minutes, is shortsighted. But I guess it's easier to look at the big picture when you are only a fan, and not in your early 20s.
FOR staff to be sticking with him, they must feel that he will make a full recovery
If you are talking about Diakite, that's not necessarily true. We're not going to nudge him out if there isn't a player waiting in the wings. But I guess if there's a bright side to no new big man, it's that the school gets another year to see if a miraculous recovery will happen. I personally don't see him here in 2020-21.

what makes you think he'd start over Keita? The UMass guy is huge and not the kind of run the court type of player that would fit in with this team. They're not going to retool the offense for him, even in the half court.

Funny, how much 'ink' this guy has gotten past 2 days and few think there's a snowball's chance of passing for a meatball, that the guy would come here or even that the Staff is pursuing him.
Ah, this Board is desperate for that Grad Big.
And believe me, I share that desperation!
Just funny.

Villanova won the 2016 National championship with no starter or reserve who played meaningful minutes being taller than 6' 6".
Simply not true. During the 2016 National Championship season, they had..........

Daniel Ochefo 6'11" (23 mpg)
Darryl Reynolds 6'8" (17 mpg)
Mikal Briges 6'7" (20 mpg)
But besides them they had no one. And to be fair I think he meant to type 7'6".

Figure there are 200 minutes in a game for 5 positions 40 minutes per. Ponds, Simon and Clark are all going to command 30+ minutes and maybe even up to 100 total per game. So off the bat, half of our minutes are gone. Someone want to fill in the rest realistically?

Room112, IDRAFT did just that yesterday on page 5 of the Roster thread. I agree that we don't have starter's minutes to offer a grad big at this point, but we really could use a backup big who can give us 10-15 meaningful mpg. May be too late to find at this point.
Quick question to you guys. If there were 12 x 4 star G's and Wing's on the roster would the team need a big at all?
I know you are tyring to be cute but I will answer seriously anyway.

Yes we would, and nobody is saying we would not. And I will also say (as I do every single time I post about this, every time) that it is a handicap to play without a backup big man this year. But what keeps getting glossed over is how bad a perimeter shooting team this was last year and how that also needed to be addressed. Figueroa was brought in to help with that and he won't be able to do that unless he plays. Ditto for Dixon.

The team didn't come in 9th because of one issue, there were multiple issues. I agree they are not all fixed, and big man depth is one. That's why I'm not picking them to win the National Championship.
All noted and basically agreed, similarly my posts are not meant to imply the team won't be better next year. Just that they'll be no where near great.

Keita averaged 1.1 ppg and 2 rpg. I'm glad he's here, but I suspect a lot of the available grad transfers would start over him. I think a lot of posters here are expecting too much from him. And no one said anything about retooling the offense for anyone. If we have numbers we attack. If not, hold back for three whole seconds until the center got in position.

I agree. There is no shortage of posts with very strong expectations for Keita, Dixon and Figgy. I am glad they are here, but I don't know how to predict what they are going to do with major minutes in the BE conference.

It's good to be optimistic, but I prefer to temper that emotion as this is not my first St. John's season.

I'm not expecting anything from Sedee on the offensive end except to set picks, get offensive rebounds and maybe get a few buckets here and there. I'm looking for him to impact on the defensive end.

No transfer/juco big is coming here to be the fifth wheel on the offensive end, hence the reference to retooling the offense.

N.C State playing transfer game well. Very tough for State to compete with the two bluebloods, but I believe Keating is going to do a very good job there.
I forgot that NC State also got Big Transfer Wyatt Walker of Samford. Was hoping here, but never in the cards. Seems solid.

IF we get a Grad Big, it’s a ‘win’ for us. If not, his defection weakens our BE-ready depth.
I wish him success but am disappointed in his decision.
But life goes on.

Chicago, the way I look at it, he gave us two very good years with always 100% effort at a time we needed any help we could get, did the schoolwork and graduated. I personally wish him the best.
