2014/15 Line up

Pointer's problem is twofold. His lack of outside shooting skills is magnified by the lack of any SJU big men having an offensive game. When he has been on the court with CO you are basically playing 3 vs. 5 and his offensive negatives stand out.
If SJU can develop a big man who is can score inside Pointer will not be called on to score as much and the other parts of his game will look better.

Pointer played great at times this season (see second Creighton game, second gtown game) he has it in him, i hope he plays more consistently during his senior season

If you can't score, you have to create possessions on offense (rebounding). He doesn't. Simple as that. If he can limit the turnovers and directly and/or indirectly create 3-4 possessions on offense with hustle, it's a different story.

Don't think good opposing coaches don't know this about Dom. Don't cover him on offense and let his man leak out after the shot, because he won't follow it. In general, St. John's won't hit the offensive glass, so opposing coaches can have their guards get out with the shot. When he is in the game we are going to get zoned by a good coach. His man will cheat to the lane to stop Jordan. When the shot goes up, he'l have a clear path to the basket. If he stands on the perimeter again...we're done.

Marillac, respectfully have to disagree. Dom doesn't choose not to rebound ...many times he guards the opposing ball handler or is at the top of a 1-3-1: and on offense Lavins system keeps him at the top of the key or in the corner beyond the arc. Dom is actually a good rebounder and a tough player. I don't think there's anything wrong with his mindset either.
But you can't have him guard the opposing point guard, or be at the top of the press/trap, and also ask him to grab 5+ defensive rebounds. Those aren't compatible goals.
I love Dlo, and I think he's a very good rebounder for his size. But you know what? He often plays the baseline when were in a 2-3, or at least on the wing. He is virtually never guarding the primary ball handler.
Let's not kid ourselves, Dom is a much better rebounder than Dangelo, but he's never in that opportune of a space on the court.

IMO, Dom needs confidence more than anything else. Stop hesitating on offense and he'll be fine.

You really think dom is a much better rebounder than Dlo? The same situations you gave for Dom can be applied to dlo. Dom was on the bottom side of the court as much or more than Dlo. How often did dom really guard the opponents point guard? Really not that much. In my opinion, id say the opposite is true, Dlo is a much better rebounder than Dom.

Dlo has much better basketball instincts than Pointer which makes this possible.

With the word that obekpa is returning, we are starting to look pretty good next year,

Starters

G - Jordan
G - DLo
G - Greene
F - Chris Jones
C - Obekpa

Bench

G - Branch
G - Balamou
F - ADR
F - JDR
F - Thomas (maybe)
F - Marlon Jones (maybe)
F - Adom Jacko (maybe)

Assuming we (a) get Thomas and (b) don't get Cunningham I think the one glaring hole that still exists in this team is a top-caliber shooter. We can be competitive in most of our games without one, but will be an uphill battle to make the Tourney. Just IMO.

Marlon Jones committed to Loyola.

Reposting with corrected lineup (to date). Thomas will bring badly needed rebounding skills. Still think glaring hole here is a high-caliber shooter.

Starters:
G- Jordan
G- Harrison
G- Greene
G/F- Pointer
C- Obekpa

Bench:
G- Branch
G- Balamou
F - Thomas (likely)
F- Jones
C - ADR
C – JDR

If high-caliber shooting doesn't come from Jordan, Harrison and Greene were not going to have a good season. So another shooter to me would be nice, but not a deal-breaker. Rebounding continues to be our weakness.

I'm on board. I think a guy who shoots 50 percent from 3 could do wonders for this team.

I'd go after Kevin Punter, Jr. (I saw someone mention him on the other site), if I were the staff. He was a first team JUCO A-A on the Div. 1 level. He committed to Missouri, but never signed. He's also a Bronx native.

Agreed. I would feel much better if we could add a 2/3 that can shoot.

Would he be interested in St. John's?

I'd imagine. He's from the Bronx and was the NYS Class B player of the year (averaged 28.2 ppg) at Salesian in New Rochelle.

Definitely put the full court press on Punter. Sell the chance to start in a three-guard offense (even though he'd really be our SF) and then he starts as a senior at his natural position.

Punter is going to Tennessee.
