#11 Marquette (MSG), Tue., Feb. 4, 6:30p, FS-1

Gold vs. Zuby is such a massive mismatch.

Gold's 21 minutes against UConn box score: 0 pts, 0-2 FG, 0 rebounds, 0 blocks, 1 steal, 0 fouls.

I literally think that is impossible for Zuby to do in a Big East game.
I agree dk, Gold is a finesse player and will have trouble with Zuby’s physicality. We have to pound the ball inside. With the way Prey has been playing defensively I think we still have the advantage defensively when he’s in the game. Gold will not be able to take Prey outside and expose him either. Prey can be physical also. I think Vince has trouble guarding Gold when he pops out for a three etc. , Vince can’t move like that. Need plenty of Zuby and then Prey

Whoever covers Kam i hope the coaches drill it into their heads that he's left handed. Watched the Marq-UConn game last night, he consistently went right and finished with his left- aka inside- hand which seemed to be surprising to the Marq players.. At one point my wife asked me why I was screaming at the TV when it wasn't even St Johns playing. That was after my third "HE'S LEFT HANDED!! THE BALL IS RIGHT THERE, BLOCK THAT S**T!!"

This is one of those things where Rick's constant complaints about guys not reading the scouting report could be an issue

Thanks for the reminder DK. I forgot they needed OT to beat DePaul and lost to Xavier at home. Johnnies can be Marquette on Tues. at home. Sometimes we SJU fans sound like Mets fans.
I have been talking about the EvanMiya player ratings all season. At one point earlier all five of our players were better than Marquette's second best. But despite MQ apparent "struggles" their top two are now above all of ours and their third best is right below.

The only problem I have with KR on Jones is the amount of energy he will have to use guarding him. Should that energy not be more dedicated to the offensive side of the ball, scoring or running the team. Wilcher may not be strong enough and Smith not big enough but at least he has the quickness. As of late, our offensive options have been limited so it’s a tricky match up for the team.
Kadary is our best defender by a nose over Scott. I am not worried about the energy as long as Scott is switching

I look it as Marquette is heavily reliant on Kam. He will be dog tired being hounded defensively by Kadary that it will balance itself out.

Look at Marquette's last six games:
-- Beat @DePaul in OT!
-- Lost against Xavier at home. Horrible first half.
-- Beat Seton Hall handily, honestly a middling Atlantic-10 caliber team. Who cares.
-- Beat Nova, but was a game similar to ours in that it was close until four minutes left.
-- Beat Butler, but was losing at half time. Butler is probably an upper echelon Atlantic-10 team.
-- Lost to UConn, couldn't make a shot in the first half.

We watch every minute of STJ games and then go on this board & analyze every minute to death afterwards, so obviously we will have harsher feelings about us. But Marquette is a team that has been on an iffy trajectory for awhile now. You can fairly interpret them as a team that may have played their best in Nov/Dec because of their continuity compared to their competition. But their size/reliance on freshman to provide it, may limit their ceiling in Feb/March.

I'm not saying we should feel uber confident or anything, but they have worts just like we do.
Great post. There still is a hint of disbelief among many St. John's fans especially those that closely follow the team and have had a long period of lean years. Even the Mets went to the World Series in 2015 and the Jets to the AFC Championship in 2010. The article below is about our last NCAA tournament win on 3/16/20. 25 years ago. It still feels a little like fear. The fear that they will let us down again. I sensed it at the end of the Providence game. The win was a great relief. Lets go out and have a great week and continue to reduce that fear.

Offensive keys to beating Marquette.

1. While it’s nice, in theory, that Pitino is encouraging Wilcher to keep shooting threes in hopes that he starts hitting them, put Wilcher in a position to do what he does best….. going to the basket and his midrange game and set up plays accordingly. They don’t need him to make threes.

2. Get Zuby more involved. As others have posted, Zuby has a physical advantage over the Marquette center, let’s take advantage of that.

3. Get Smith to penetrate more, using his quickness and then dish to Zuby.

4. Aside from Kadary’s ability to create, run more pick and roles with Zuby or Luis, Vince or Prey.

5. In terms of Luis, set a high screen and let him go to the hoop or come off and hit midrange shots.

6. Since Scott’s only form of offense of late is taking threes, limit that and have him crash the boards more.

7. Please tell Glover he doesn’t have to shoot the ball as soon as he enters the game.

I believe that with our great D, these games have been close due to the number of empty offensive possessions they have had as of late. This is not a three point shooting team and shooting threes there’s at least a 75% chance they will not score when they are taken. Work to your strengths not weaknesses, we need to win these upcoming games.

Marquette will make it hard to pound it inside early but I would prefer if we pound it at them before taking long 3's like we did against Providence. At some point in the game we will get some good looks from outside with time for our players to get comfortable and set their feet.

His best attribute is his relentless positivity - even about his opponents.
Lawman writing his press releases helps too 😀

Joking aside I do think he’s a phenomenal coach. I just think it’s yoda vs young Jedi and Yoda wins

The 2 seed has to fly across country to play 15 seed Northern Arizona in Tuscon. Meanwhile, 2 seed Puke is probably playing Montana in Raleigh or Wilmington. Typical St. Johns.
